Environmental Management in Times of Crisis.Johanne Grosvold & Grosvold Dahlmann - 2010 - Proceedings of the International Association for Business and Society 21:105-120.
This study sets out to evaluate the role and emerging salience of environmental managers in a longitudinal perspective through a series of interviews with UK based environmental managers. Our results suggest that coercive isomorphic pressures are particularly important in driving the increased salience of the environmental management role and that stakeholder pressures overall have increased since 2006 which has further contributed to the environmental management function emerging as central to the business organisation. Views on the impact of the financial crisis (...)

Board diversity in the United Kingdom and Norway: an exploratory analysis.Johanne Grosvold, Stephen Brammer & Bruce Rayton - 2007 - Business Ethics 16 (4):344-357.
This paper examines the evolving pattern of gender diversity of the boards of directors of leading Norwegian and British companies on a longitudinal basis. The period covered by the study covers the run up to proposed affirmative action legislation in Norway and, as such, affords an insight into corporate actions in this emerging institutional context. The findings demonstrate that, while board diversity has grown substantially in both countries in recent years, it has done so considerably more rapidly in Norway than (...)

Women on Corporate Boards: A Comparative Institutional Analysis.Stephen Brammer, Bruce Rayton & Johanne Grosvold - 2016 - Business and Society 55 (8):1157-1196.
How do a country’s basic institutions enable or hinder women’s rise to the boards of public companies? The study evaluates this question with reference to the five basic institutions that research suggests are common across all countries: family, education, economy, government, and religion. The study draws on a sample, which consists of 23 countries, and the study is framed in neo-institutional theory. In analyzing the role of these institutions, the article seeks to understand better the relationships between specific institutions and (...)

The Purpose Ecosystem and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Interactions Among Private Sector Actors and Stakeholders.Wendy Stubbs, Frederik Dahlmann & Rob Raven - 2022 - Journal of Business Ethics 180 (4):1097-1112.
In this paper we explore the nature of the emerging purpose ecosystem and its role in transforming and supporting business to help address the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We argue that interactions among its ‘private actors’, who share efforts and belief in changing and redefining the purpose and nature of business by advocating broader non-financial performance outcomes, have the potential to contribute to a wider sustainability-oriented transformation of the business sector. Through interview data collected in the UK and Australia, we (...)

Country, Industry, and Firm-Level Influences on the Prevalence of Women on Corporate Boards.Johanne Grosvold & Stephen Brammer - 2009 - Proceedings of the International Association for Business and Society 20:261-277.
Prior research that analyses the cross-firm variation in the prevalence of women on corporate boards has tended to emphasise the importance of firm and industry-level factors, such as firm size, the quality of corporate governance, and the proximity to final consumers. In contrast, very little research has explored the role of national institutional factors for this important phenomenon. In this study, we explore the relative importance of country, industry, and firm-level factors in explaining the cross-firm variation in the proportion of (...)

Country Institutional Context as an Antecedent of Female Board Representation: An Empirical Study.Johanne Grosvold & Stephen Brammer - 2008 - Proceedings of the International Association for Business and Society 19:395-408.
In this study, we set out to examine the role played by country institutional environments in explaining cross-country variation in the prevalence of women on corporate boards of directors. In order to address this question, we compare the predictive power and substantive implications of four existing typologies of national institutional environments due to Hall and Soskice (2001), La Porta et al., (1999), Weimar and Pape’s (1999), and Whitley (1991, 1996, 1999). These frameworks encapsulate a variety of national institutionalcharacteristics and provide (...)

Women on Corporate Boards: A Comparative Analysis of 50 Countries.Johanne Grosvold & Stephen Brammer - 2007 - Proceedings of the International Association for Business and Society 18:345-350.
In this article we explore the influences upon the proportion of women on a country’s corporate boards. Using a conceptual framework that builds uponnational business systems theory, we investigate the extent to which national economic, cultural, political and social institutions explain cross-country variationin the gender composition of corporate elites. In the context of a sample drawn from over 40 countries, our empirical analysis shows that such institutionscollectively explain approximately two-thirds of the variance between countries in the percentage of women on (...)

Conceptualising Sustainability as the Pursuit of Life.Frederik Dahlmann - forthcoming - Journal of Business Ethics:1-23.
Complex and urgent challenges including climate change and the significant decline in biodiversity provide a broad agenda for interdisciplinary scholars interested in the implications facing businesses, humanity, and other species. Within this context of sustainability, persistent conflicts between key paradigms create substantial barriers against—but also opportunities for—developing new conceptual approaches and theoretical models to understand and respond to these critical issues. Here, I revisit paradigmatic tensions to assess their impact on research and debate on sustainability, ethics, and business. Drawing on (...)

Corporate Governance vs. Corporate Environmental Governance: Complementary or Separate Drivers of Environmental Performance?Frederik Dahlmann & Stephen Brammer - 2013 - Proceedings of the International Association for Business and Society 24:153-162.
This paper prepares an investigation into the roles and effectiveness of different types of corporate governance and environmental governance mechanisms in driving improvements in environmental performance. More specifically, the authors provide background theory regarding the way in which different types of traditional corporate governance and new concepts of environmental governance might have an impact on reducing firms’ levels of greenhouse gas emissions intensities. The paper also suggests a method of how this could be empirically tested.

Reducing Carbon Emissions Worldwide: MNCs and Global Environmental Performance.Frederik Dahlmann & Stephen Brammer - 2013 - Proceedings of the International Association for Business and Society 24:144-152.
This paper prepares an investigation into environmental performance among multinational enterprises in the context of greenhouse gas emissions. The authors offer a theoretical background about how MNCs are faced with opposing choices with regard to standardising or adjusting their local environmental performances. Moreover, we outline a potential methodology for exploring the variation in MNCs’ levels of greenhouse gas emissions around the world.

Gegenaufklärung.Alex Gruber, Manfred Dahlmann & Philipp Lenhard (eds.) - 2011 - Freiburg: Ca Ira.

Supply Chain Management and the Natural Environment: New UK Evidence.Frederik Dahlmann, Stephen Brammer & Andrew Millington - 2007 - Proceedings of the International Association for Business and Society 18:306-311.
In this article we explore the state of current ESCM practices in U.K. companies. We develop a conceptual framework that draws upon the stakeholder,resource-based, and power-dependence perspectives and examine this framework in light of empirical evidence concerning ESCM in 166 UK companies. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, our evidence suggests that around 50% of sample companies engage in some form of ESCM activity and that experiencing significant external pressure from customers is an important driver of ESCM.

The Longitudinal Development of Corporate Environmental Strategy in the U.S.Frederik Dahlmann & Stephen Brammer - 2008 - Proceedings of the International Association for Business and Society 19:343-359.
Anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that firms are responding differently to the mounting concerns over environmental degradation and climate change. While a few studies at individual firm level do exist, relatively little is known about the longitudinal development of corporate environmental strategy at the population level of firms. Employing KLD data we explore the evolution of environmental strategy among a sample of S&P500 corporations over the period 1997 to 2006. We theoretically ground our study in Burgelman’s (1991) autonomous and induced (...)

Managing Carbon Aspirations: The Influence of Corporate Climate Change Targets on Environmental Performance.Stephen Brammer, Layla Branicki & Frederik Dahlmann - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 158 (1):1-24.
Addressing climate change is among the most challenging ethical issues facing contemporary business and society. Unsustainable business activities are causing significant distributional and procedural injustices in areas such as public health and vulnerability to extreme weather events, primarily because of a distinction between primary emitters and those already experiencing the impacts of climate change. Business, as a significant contributor to climate change and beneficiary of externalizing environmental costs, has an obligation to address its environmental impacts. In this paper, we explore (...)

From “business as usual” to sustainable “purpose‐driven business”: Challenges facing the purpose ecosystem in the United Kingdom and Australia.Fergus Lyon, Wendy Stubbs, Frederik Dahlmann & Melissa Edwards - forthcoming - Business and Society Review.
Purpose‐driven businesses have a stated objective to contribute to the welfare of society and the planet alongside generating shareholder value. As interest in purpose‐driven businesses grows, an emerging “purpose ecosystem” of advisers, investors, and enablers offers different types of support for businesses wanting to transition to sustainability. This paper examines how the transition towards purpose‐driven business in Australia and the United Kingdom requires addressing challenges facing this support ecosystem at three levels. First, at the individual level where support providers need (...)
