Durante cuatro siglos, cristianos (de rito romano o visigótico), musulmanes y judíos coexistieron en la ciudad de Toledo. Pero tal coexistencia, antes de terminar de manera trágica, se caracterizó por muchos matices y atravesó circunstancias diversas. Cuando los llamados mozárabes (cristianos arabizados de rito visigótico) se fundieron en la masa cristiana de rito latino y lengua hispánica, después de dominar en la ciudad durante largo tiempo, los musulmanes (mudéjares), nunca muy numerosos, alcanzaron cierto apogeo en el siglo XIV, antes de (...) quedar parcialmente marginalizados en el XV. En cuanto a los judíos, debido al papel que desempeñaban en la gestión del dinero, fueron objeto de la ira y el furor popular, sobre todo en los siglos XIV y XV, incluso después de su conversión, fingida o sincera, a la fe cristiana. Cet article commence par examiner tous les témoignages textuels permettant de situer des églises dans la Cordoue des VIIIe-Xe siècles et ses environs. La conclusion est que si l�on rencontre bien des lieux de culte chrétiens dans la campagne et dans la montagne (notamment les monastères de la sierra), ainsi que dans les « faubourgs » (arrabales) de la ville, il est impossible d�en situer avec certitude à l�intérieur de la madi-na, la vieille ville entourée de murailles. La seconde partie (...) du travail cherche à expliquer cette situation par l�examen des textes juridiques de l�époque, et notamment une fatwa- de début du Xe siècle, qui déclare qu�on ne peut construire, ou restaurer, des églises, qu�hors de la vue des musulmans, et à l�écart de leur « sanctuaire » (haram). La conclusion est que s�il y avait bien des églises, et des chrétiens pour les fréquenter, dans la Cordoue des VIIIe-Xe siècles, elles étaient situées dans la périphérie urbaine, leur intégration dans la ville résultant seulement de la croissance de l�agglomération à la fin du IXe et au Xe siècle, en même temps que du mouvement de conversion massive, qui ont réintroduit une mixité religieuse que les autorités islamiques prétendaient éviter. Este artículo examina el problema de la fecha y circunstancias en que desapareció el cristianismo de origen local en el Occidente islámico, desde Ifrīqiya hasta Garb al-Andalus. Concluye que resulta imposible negar el papel de los almohades y él momento en que se estableció su poder, porque coinciden en ello testimonios de procedencia muy variada. Pero hace constar, por una parte, que no disponemos, hasta el momento, de documentos de procedencia islámica occidental para reivindicar la supresión de la ḏimma, en (...) lo que toca a los cristianos como a los judíos y, por otra parte, que se puede considerar a los mozárabes, y otros cristianos del Occidente islámico, como víctimas tanto de la presión procedente del Norte como de la reacción de la población musulmana mayoritaria. Biological evolution is a complex blend of ever changing structural stability, variability and emergence of new phe- notypes, niches, ecosystems. We wish to argue that the evo- lution of life marks the end of a physics world view of law entailed dynamics. Our considerations depend upon dis- cussing the variability of the very ”contexts of life”: the in- teractions between organisms, biological niches and ecosys- tems. These are ever changing, intrinsically indeterminate and even unprestatable: we do not know ahead of (...) time the ”niches” which constitute the boundary conditions on selec- tion. More generally, by the mathematical unprestatability of the ”phase space”, no laws of mo- tion can be formulated for evolution. We call this radical emergence, from life to life. The purpose of this paper is the integration of variation and diversity in a sound concep- tual frame and situate unpredictability at a novel theoretical level, that of the very phase space. Our argument will be carried on in close comparisons with physics and the mathematical constructions of phase spaces in that discipline. The role of symmetries as invariant preserving transformations will allow us to under- stand the nature of physical phase spaces and to stress the differences required for a sound biological theoretizing. In this frame, we discuss the novel notion of ”enablement”. Life lives in a web of enablement and radical emergence. This will restrict causal analyses to differential cases. Mutations or other causal differ- ences will allow us to stress that ”non conservation princi- ples” are at the core of evolution, in contrast to physical dynamics, largely based on conservation principles as sym- metries. Critical transitions, the main locus of symmetry changes in physics, will be discussed, and lead to ”extended criticality” as a conceptual frame for a better understanding of the living state of matter. This paper aims to show that Godel's ontological argument can be parodied in much the same kind of way in which Gaunilo parodied Anselm's Proslogion argument. The parody in this paper fails; there is a patch provided in "Reply to Gettings" (Analysis 60, 4, 2000, 363-7).

This paper is a critical examination of Stephen Neale's *The Philosophical Significance of Godel's slingshot*. I am sceptical of the philosophical significance of Godel’s Slingshot (and of Slingshot arguments in general). In particular, I do not believe that Godel’s Slingshot has any interesting and important philosophical consequences for theories of facts or for referential treatments of definite descriptions. More generally, I do not believe that any Slingshot arguments have interesting and important philosophical consequences for theories of facts or for referential (...) treatments of definite descriptions. Friends of facts and referential treatments of definite descriptions can, and should, proceed with the construction of their theories, blithely ignoring the many Slingshots which now litter the landscape.
