The Curie's Lab and its Women (1906–1934) Le laboratoire Curie et ses Femmes (1906–1934).Natalie Pigeard Micault - 2013 - Annals of Science 70 (1):71-100.
Summary Marie Curie directed a research laboratory from 1906 to 1934. Several studies have already described its operation, as well as its importance in the field of radioactivity. This article hopes to show, not how the laboratory was unique, but rather how it was integrated into the French University movement at the start of the 20th century. The goal is to resituate the Curie laboratory in the context of the history of higher scientific education in France. This (...)

    Pozytywizm, racjonalizm i... romantyzm Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie.Barbara Petelenz - 2015 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 59:101-124.
The International Year of Chemistry, intertwined with commemoration of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded in 1911 to Marie Skłodowska-Curie, made me to ask about the philosophical background of this outstanding woman. The first factor which I could see was the positivism, launched by August Comte in France and developed a few decades later by his Polish followers. Another factor which seemed to me important was the interplay between the emotional and intellectual attitudes among the Poles in the (...)

Giordano Bruno and the hermetic tradition.Frances Amelia Yates - 1964 - New York: Routledge.
Placing Bruno—both advanced philosopher and magician burned at the stake—in the Hermetic tradition, Yates's acclaimed study gives an overview not only of Renaissance humanism but of its interplay—and conflict—with magic and occult practices. "Among those who have explored the intellectual world of the sixteenth century no one in England can rival Miss Yates. Wherever she looks, she illuminates. Now she has looked on Bruno. This brilliant book takes time to digest, but it is an intellectual adventure to read it. Historians (...)

The visual diplomacy of cancer treatments: the mediatic legacy of the Curies in the early transnational fight against cancer.Beatriz Medori - 2023 - British Journal for the History of Science 56 (2):167-183.
This paper analyses the role played by members of the Curie family in the visual diplomacy of cancer treatments. This relationship started in 1921, when Marie Curie travelled to the US, accompanied by her two daughters, Ève and Irène, to receive a gram of radium at the White House from President Warren Harding. In the years that followed, Ève Curie, as the biographer and natural heir of radium discoverers Marie and Pierre Curie, continued to contribute to (...)

The endophilosophy of interculturalism as a new terminology to describe the equilibrium of Being within the construction of Culture and Identity.Arjan Çuri & Ilda Kashami - 2023 - Balkan Journal of Philosophy 15 (2):187-194.
Research on the meanings of self and others’ perceptions, beliefs, values, and attitudes in intracultural and intercultural relations is of significant social relevance. A micro-analysis of its development as a whole process differentiated by the single substrates from an endophilosophical and ontological viewpoint will allow the implementation of a new definition of the self, being, and other according to the principles of dynamics and interculturality. This new sense of defining being will not only produce a good conception of the impact (...)

Virtuous Contempt and the Ritual Community in Confucius and Xúnzǐ.Curie Virág - 2023 - Emotion Review 15 (3):178-188.
Both Confucius and Xúnzǐ take for granted that contempt, in certain situations, is an appropriate and justified response for a person of virtuous character. But Xúnzǐ departs from his predecessor in his insistence on drawing clear boundaries around contempt so as to diminish its destructive and destabilizing potential. This article argues that Xúnzǐ's efforts to circumscribe contempt reflect a shift in the vision of the ritual community from one based on affective ties to one based on an impersonal, universalist state. (...)

Topological inductive definitions.Giovanni Curi - 2012 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 163 (11):1471-1483.
In intuitionistic generalized predicative systems as constructive set theory, or constructive type theory, two categories have been proposed to play the role of the category of locales: the category FSp of formal spaces, and its full subcategory FSpi of inductively generated formal spaces. Considered in impredicative systems as the intuitionistic set theory IZF, FSp and FSpi are both equivalent to the category of locales. However, in the mentioned predicative systems, FSp fails to be closed under basic constructions such as that (...)

On the T 1 axiom and other separation properties in constructive point-free and point-set topology.Peter Aczel & Giovanni Curi - 2010 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 161 (4):560-569.
In this note a T1 formal space is a formal space whose points are closed as subspaces. Any regular formal space is T1. We introduce the more general notion of a formal space, and prove that the class of points of a weakly set-presentable formal space is a set in the constructive set theory CZF. The same also holds in constructive type theory. We then formulate separation properties for constructive topological spaces , strengthening separation properties discussed elsewhere. Finally we relate (...)

Il s'agit, au travers de regards croisés, d'éclairer le débat du genre au sein de la sphère bioéthique en identifiant, au sein et au-delà des (...)

    Exact approximations to Stone–Čech compactification.Giovanni Curi - 2007 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 146 (2):103-123.
Given a locale L and any set-indexed family of continuous mappings , fi:L→Li with compact and completely regular co-domain, a compactification η:L→Lγ of L is constructed enjoying the following extension property: for every a unique continuous mapping exists such that . Considered in ordinary set theory, this compactification also enjoys certain convenient weight limitations.Stone–Čech compactification is obtained as a particular case of this construction in those settings in which the class of [0,1]-valued continuous mappings is a set for all L. On some peculiar aspects of the constructive theory of point-free spaces.Giovanni Curi - 2010 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 56 (4):375-387.
This paper presents several independence results concerning the topos-valid and the intuitionistic predicative theory of locales. In particular, certain consequences of the consistency of a general form of Troelstra's uniformity principle with constructive set theory and type theory are examined.

Analogues of Ourselves: Who Counts as an Other?Frances Chaput Waksler - 2005 - Human Studies 28 (4):417-429.
What attributions must any actor make to an other in order to engage in face-to-face interaction with that other? Edmund Husserl's use of “analogues” suggests that actors use their own experiences of themselves as a starting pointin making such attributions. Alfred Schutz and Erving Goffman claim that for face-to-face interaction to occur, an other must be recognized as copresent and reciprocity must be established. I assert here that the means for determining that these conditions have been met will vary. I (...)
