    Framing and Editing Interpersonal Arguments.Dale Hample, Ben Warner & Dorian Young - 2008 - Argumentation 23 (1):21-37.
Since argument frames precede most other arguing processes, argument editing among them, one’s frames may well predict one’s preferred editorial standards. This experiment assesses people’s arguing frames, gives them arguments to edit, and tests whether the frames actually do predict editorial preferences. Modest relationships between argument frames and argument editing appear. Other connections among frames, editing, and additional individual differences variables are more substantial. Particularly notable are the informative influences of psychological reactance. A new theoretical contribution is offered, connecting argument (...)

Frames as pre-signal context: using a semiotic framing approach to explain how prior experiences shape present interpretations of control signals.Adam Aitken - 2024 - Semiotica 2024 (258):25-48.
Innes’s “control signals” provides a semiotic perspective for explaining how acts of social control send “signals” about the effectiveness of security mechanisms. A cross-cutting theme infers that “culture and situation matter” in the reception of signals. However, the control signals concept does not explicitly consider the influence that prior experiences may have on present interpretations. Drawing on qualitative research into how members of a residential community perceived control measures within their everyday environment for Glasgow’s 2014 Commonwealth Games, this article outlines (...)

Gender and Leadership: A Frame Analysis of University Home Web Page Images.Kristine F. Hoover, Deborah A. O’Neil & Michael Poutiatine - 2014 - Journal of Academic Ethics 12 (1):15-27.
With calls for (business) leaders to contribute to greater global fairness and social justice (BAWB 2006; Maak and Pless Journal of Business Ethics, 88, 537–550, 2009), this paper considers gender equality on University home web page images as one means of communicating equal access to leadership roles for both men and women. Although there are many paths for leadership development, one important purpose of Universities is to create people who will potentially become leaders in our society (Shapiro 2005). We analyzed (...)

The sonic framing of place: Microsociology, urban atmospheres and quiet hour shopping.Eduardo de la Fuente & Michael James Walsh - 2022 - Thesis Eleven 172 (1):131-149.
In this article we examine the sonic framing of place. Our theoretical approach combines Goffman’s microsociology (and its sociology of music/sound studies off-shoots) with an account of sound in the urban atmospheres literature. Drawing on the work of French urban sociologist Jean-Paul Thibaud and associated work on sound in urban environments by the CRESSON research centre, we propose that sound frames activity in particular ways, including by infusing self and space with a certain tone, and by rendering places (...)

  18. The structure of context: Deciphering "frame analysis".Thomas J. Scheff - 2005 - Sociological Theory 23 (4):368-385.
This article proposes that Goffman's "Frame Analysis" can be interpreted as a step toward unpacking the idea of context. His analysis implies a recursive model involving frames within frames. The key problem is that neither Goffman nor anyone else has clearly defined what is meant by a frame. I propose that it can be represented by a word, phrase, or proposition. A subjective context can be represented as an assembly of these items, joined together by operators such as (...)

The Importance of Ritual Discourse in Framing Ayahuasca Experiences in the Context of Shamanic Tourism.Evgenia Fotiou - 2020 - Anthropology of Consciousness 31 (2):223-244.
In this article, I discuss how ritual is framed in the context of ayahuasca tourism, using ethnographic data collected in and around Iquitos, Peru. Alluding to a lack of socially sanctioned spaces for altered states of consciousness (ASCs) in western cultures, contemporary seekers flock to the Amazon to participate in ayahuasca ceremonies for an array of reasons, including healing and personal transformation. Taking Gregory Bateson's concept of “framing” as a point of departure, and applying Erving Goffman's frame analysis, (...)

    Preformation of ontogenetic patterns.Michael J. Katz & William Goffman - 1981 - Philosophy of Science 48 (3):438-453.
Most patterns of an organism develop reproducibly and predictably. Thus, most biological patterns are largely predetermined by the nature of the zygote and by the nature of the surrounding world. Some ontogenetic patterns can also be considered to be preformed. Eighteenth and nineteenth century definitions of 'preformation' suggested that all aspects of a precursor pattern--its elements and its configuration--are preserved during development. Today, the idea of preformed configurations has been lost. To revive this lost idea, we offer the following biologically (...)

A qualitative analysis of stigmatizing language in birth admission clinical notes.Veronica Barcelona, Danielle Scharp, Betina R. Idnay, Hans Moen, Dena Goffman, Kenrick Cato & Maxim Topaz - 2023 - Nursing Inquiry 30 (3):e12557.
The presence of stigmatizing language in the electronic health record (EHR) has been used to measure implicit biases that underlie health inequities. The purpose of this study was to identify the presence of stigmatizing language in the clinical notes of pregnant people during the birth admission. We conducted a qualitative analysis on N = 1117 birth admission EHR notes from two urban hospitals in 2017. We identified stigmatizing language categories, such as Disapproval (39.3%), Questioning patient credibility (37.7%), Difficult patient (21.3%), (...)

    A history of Western philosophy and theology.John M. Frame - 2015 - Phillipsburg, New Jersey: P&R Publishing.
A History of Western Philosophy and Theology is the fruit of John Frame's forty-five years of teaching philosophical subjects. No other survey of the history of Western thought offers the same invigorating blend of expositional clarity, critical insight, and biblical wisdom. The supplemental study questions, bibliographies, links to audio lectures, quotes from influential thinkers, twenty appendices, and indexed glossary make this an excellent main textbook choice for seminary- and college-level courses and for personal study. Charles Darwin: an Australian selection.Tom Frame, Nicholas Drayson & Robyn Williams (eds.) - 2008 - Canberra: National Museum of Australia Press.
Charles Darwin found much in Australia to challenge and inform his thinking. This book explores the impact that Darwin’s short visit to Australia in 1836 had on the man himself and on the emerging nation. Now, more than 170 years later, Darwin continues to influence Australian attitudes to life and living.

Ethics under fire: challenges for the Australian Army.Thomas R. Frame & Albert Palazzo (eds.) - 2017 - Sydney, New South Wales: University of New South Wales Press.
The 1968 My Lai Massacre in South Vietnam and shocking events at Abu Graibh prison in Iraq in 2003 show that the behaviour of some in the American military has descended into barbarism. How strong is the military's commitment to avoiding misconduct and atrocity? This timely and compelling book asks critical questions and raises sobering issues the Australian Army can't ignore. Leading military personnel, aid workers, commentators and scholars discuss the Australian Army's commitment to behaving ethically and the challenges associated (...)

Business Ethics in the Curriculum: Integrating Ethics through Work Experience.Mary Hartog & Philip Frame - 2004 - Journal of Business Ethics 54 (4):399-409.
In this paper we seek to make the case for a teaching and learning strategy that integrates business ethics in the curriculum, whilst not precluding a disciplines based approach to this subject. We do this in the context of specific work experience modules at undergraduate level which are offered by Middlesex University Business School, part of a modern university based in North West London. We firstly outline our educative values and then the modules that form the basis of our research. (...)
