This exposition focuses on purposeful behavioursaseffortstoward self-actualization. I introducehabit as a set of value-based behaviours that is different than the typical habit of physical movements. Each of those praxis is controlled by cognition drivenby values –both personal and societal, and their following habitsare the result of complex learning. I will then elaborate on three important topics: (1) awareness and efficacy with respect tohabit, (2) collective habit, and (3) implications of existential habit on the individual’s as well as the society’s wellbeing.

The regulation of Native identity has been central to the colonization process in both Canada and the United States. Systems of classification and control enable settler governments to define who is "Indian," and control access to Native land. These regulatory systems have forcibly supplanted traditional Indigenous ways of identifying the self in relation to land and community, functioning discursively to naturalize colonial worldviews. Decolonization, then, must involve deconstructing and reshaping how we understand Indigenous identity.

The replicon hypothesis, first proposed in 1963 by Jacob and Brenner(1), states that DNA replication is controlled at sites called origins. Replication origins have been well studied in prokaryotes. However, the study of eukaryotic chromosomal origins has lagged behind, because until recently there has been no method for reliably determining the identity and location of origins from eukaryotic chromosomes. Here, we review a technique we developed with the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae that allows both the mapping of replication origins and an (...) assessment of their activity. Two‐dimensional agarose gel electrophoresis and Southern hybridization with total genomic DNA are used to determine whether a particular restriction fragment acquires the branched structure diagnostic of replication initiation. The technique has been used to localize origins in yeast chromosomes and assess their initiation efficiency. In some cases, origin activation is dependent upon the surrounding context. The technique is also being applied to a variety of eukaryotic organisms. (shrink)

When a member of an organization has to make a decision or act in a way that may benefit some stakeholders at the expense of others, ethical dilemmas may arise. This paper examines ethical sensitivity regarding the duties to clients and owners (principals), employees (agents), and responsibilities to society (third parties). Within this framework, ethical perceptions of male and female managers are compared between the U.S. and Turkey – two countries that differ on power distance as well as the individualism/collectivism (...) dimensions. Our results show that ethical sensitivity varies depending upon whether the interests of principals, agents, or third parties are affected by a given ethical dilemma. We also find that, contingent upon the principal-agent–society relationships, the nationality and gender of the decision-maker influences ethical sensitivity. (shrink)

BackgroundParole officers are one of many actors in the legal system charged with interpreting and enforcing the law. Officers not only assure that parolees under their supervision comply with the terms of their release, but also monitor and control parolees’ criminal behavior. They conduct their jobs through their understanding of their official mandate and make considered and deliberate choices while executing that mandate. However, their experiences as legal actors may impact their implicit cognitions about parolees. This experiment is the first (...) of its kind to examine implicit associations between the self and parolees among actors of the legal system.ObjectiveThe present study examines the implicit cognitive consequences of the quality of the parole officer-parolee relationship from the perspective of the parole officer; specifically, whether parole officers who are reminded of positive experiences with parolees implicitly associate more with the group parolees than those reminded of a negative experience. In addition, we explore the moderating effects of parole officers’ subjective professional orientation and identification.MethodEighty-four New Jersey parole officers participated in the study. First, an experimental manipulation of either a past positive or negative experience was administered via a writing task. Participants then completed an Implicit Association Test to measure associations between the self-concept of parole officers with parolees who are part of the group criminal, followed by measures of professional orientation and identification.ResultsParticipants who were reminded of a positive experience with a parolee exhibited stronger associations between self and the group parolee when compared to those who were reminded of a negative experience. Neither professional orientation nor parole officer group identification were related to implicit associations and did not moderate the effect of the past experience reminder on implicit associations.Conclusion and ImplicationsImplicit cognitions of parole officers may influence their behaviors and interactions with those whom they supervise. Positive reminders affect implicit self-associations with parolees presumably via empathy, which is known to affect the quality of therapeutic and supervision relationships; thus, theoretically, leading to improved outcomes for both officers and parolees. El objetivo principal es tener en cuenta una visión indígena de la naturaleza. En el siguiente artículo examinaremos si los argumentos para conceder derechos a la naturaleza también pueden derivarse de la tradición del pensamiento occidental. Además, se tendrá en cuenta la historia del concepto de «naturaleza viva», desde Aristóteles hasta la actualidad, así como su importancia para el estatuto (...) jurídico de la naturaleza. 알베르투스는 『원인론』(Liber de causis)을 분리실체(이존실체)에 관한 아리스토텔레스의 이론으로 간주하는 중세의 일반적인 원인론 수용 전통을 충실히 따르고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 그는 13세기 라틴 중세의 아리스토텔레스적인 『원인론』 수용의 가장 대표적인 사례이기도 하다. 알베르투스는 『형이상학』과 『원인론』을 종합하는데에 아랍-신플라톤주의적인 아리스토텔레스 철학을 해석학적 도구로 사용하는데, 이 과정에서 원인론의 몇몇 핵심 내용들이 굴절되어 나타난다. 그는 제일원인이 세계에 작용을 일으키는 방식에 대해서 소위 페리파토스 정식(quod non tangit, non agit)과 알가잘리(al-Ghazālī)의 형이상학의 근본명제(ab uno non nisi unum)에 기반한 설명을 내놓고 있다. 이런 측면에서, 『원인론 주해』에 나타난 알베르투스의 선성(bonitas)의 유출 (...) 형이상학(La metaphysique de flux)은 원인론의 자구에 충실하지 않은 해석을 전제한다. 본 논문은 알베르투스의 『원인론 주해』 에 나타난 제일원인 자체이자 제일원인에서 세계로 흘러드는 제일선성의 개념을 이중적으로 사용한 동기를 정당화할 근거를 찾고자 한다. 원인으로서의 제일선성과 유출된 것으로서의 제일선성이 동일하다고 하면서, 제일선성의 초월적인 특성보다는 세계 내적인 특성에 좀 더 초점을 두는 알베르투스의 입장은, 『형이상학』을 『원인론』과 결합할 때에 발생하는 형식적 모순을 해결하려는 의도와 관련이 있을 수 있다. After showing that despite being inherently flawed the concept of dignity cannot be replaced without loss by ethical principles such as “respect for persons,” it is argued that, if dignity be not understood as dignitas, but as bonitas, which emphasizes connectedness rather than excellence and to which the proper response is not respect, but awe, there is no reason not to ascribe it to the human embryo. The question whether or not human embryos have dignity can then be answered in (...) the affirmative on the same pragmatist grounds that ultimately lead us to respect other human persons as possessors of dignity, that is, a special moral worth. Rather, the idea that a government should protect its citizens from disease by maintaining sanitary conditions has its origin in Renaissance humanities texts, and the notion that physicians have public health responsibilities emerged in the works of such Enlightenment authors as Johann Peter Frank, Benjamin Rush, and John (...) Gregory (II, Coughlin and Beauchamp 1996). When the spread of infectious diseases such as typhoid and cholera accompanied the growth of the Industrial Revolution, England was the first to respond by passing the Public Health Act of 1848. The motivation for this reform was not based in humanitarian concerns but in the realization that unsanitary conditions were costly to industry. “... [The] founders of the public health movement were guided by nineteenth century utilitarian moral theories... the greatest good for the greatest number... accompanied by a growing appreciation for the innate value and dignity of mankind... however, the rights and autonomy of individuals have not always been respected in pursuing these important objectives” (I, Coughlin 1995, p. 1).Public health projects have dramatically improved global health status. Disclosure of risk information in the clinical encounter is complicated by issues of uncertainty with regard to the data itself. Causation and causal inference may be affected by “wish bias,” leading to studies that use the same data but reach widely varying conclusions (II, Weed 1997). Given the complexity of the statistical calculations used to validate public health recommendations, and mass media’s portrayal of them, the public may be unintentionally deceived by population-based recommendations (V, Seedhouse 1997; II, Lupton 1995). With the addition of genetic screening, another layer of statistical complexity is added to this mix (VI, Stone and Steward 1996).Health Promotion and EducationIncreased life expectancy brought about by advances in public health has raised a new set of problems. Esta se desenvolve epistemologicamente em Arte-educação descolonial a partir da condição na qual sempre fui colocado, de corpo estranho, por ser imperfeito ao modelo de corpo colonial imposto no ocidente, sempre em relação a um Outro. Continuamente, por isso, vivo sendo posto na categoria de “Ser menos”, na cultura, na vida, no aprendizado, como outros (...) tantos corpos estranhos também vivem: ocupando o fundo da cena para deixar a coreografia em dança bonita ou as apresentações teatrais ou musicais harmônicas. Este artigo considera o desenraizamento afetivo-religioso de Freud no seu contexto familiar e sociocultural e também visa mostrar algumas críticas que neofreudianos e cientistas fazem a Freud. Condicionado, conscientemente ou não, pelas representações (memórias) originárias, Freud não aprofundou as raízes afetivo-religiosas no chão pedregoso de sua infância. Suas primeiras experiências afetivo-religiosas (não tão positivas) foram como pedras escabrosas no chão de sua frágil existência. Com o drástico desaparecimento da babá Resi Wittek, as tenras raízes afetivo-religiosas do psiquismo de Freud praticamente (...) perdem a inicial vitalidade, tentando compensar essa perda com sua mãe, em nível de cuidados e afetos, que não podia corresponder. Ela poderia somente oferecer-lhe um suporte em nível narcisista (jovem e bonita). Ele somente recebeu esse apoio afetivo-religioso de seu pai (Jakob) mais tarde quando já marcado negativamente em seus relacionamentos com os primeiros objetos. Assim determinado, Freud se sente desamparado, em sua infância. Ao entrar na adolescência Freud se declara ateu influenciado pelo ambiente cultural eivado do cientificismo ateu e de um radical anticlericalismo. Sem raízes afetivo-religiosas profundas, em nível experiencial, Freud não poderia ser uma árvore robusta na dimensão religioso-espiritual, apesar de tanto se preocupar com ela. (shrink)
