The degree of certainty in brain death: probability in clinical and Islamic legal discourse.Faisal Qazi, Joshua C. Ewell, Ayla Munawar, Usman Asrar & Nadir Khan - 2013 - Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics 34 (2):117-131.
The University of Michigan conference “Where Religion, Policy, and Bioethics Meet: An Interdisciplinary Conference on Islamic Bioethics and End-of-Life Care” in April 2011 addressed the issue of brain death as the prototype for a discourse that would reflect the emergence of Islamic bioethics as a formal field of study. In considering the issue of brain death, various Muslim legal experts have raised concerns over the lack of certainty in the scientific criteria as applied to the definition and diagnosis of brain (...)

An Experimenter's Influence on Motor Enhancements: The Effects of Letter Congruency and Sensory Switch-Costs on Multisensory Integration.Ayla Barutchu & Charles Spence - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
Multisensory integration can alter information processing, and previous research has shown that such processes are modulated by sensory switch costs and prior experience. Here we report an incidental finding demonstrating, for the first time, the interplay between these processes and experimental factors, specifically the presence of the experimenter in the testing room. Experiment 1 demonstrates that multisensory motor facilitation in response to audiovisual stimuli is higher in those trials in which the sensory modality switches than when it repeats. Those participants (...)

Determination of national midwifery ethical values and ethical codes: In Turkey.Ayla Ergin, Müesser Özcan, Zeynep Acar, Nermin Ersoy & Nazan Karahan - 2013 - Nursing Ethics 20 (7):0969733012474289.
It is important to define and practice ethical rules and codes for professionalisation. Several national and international associations have determined midwifery ethical codes. In Turkey, ethical rules and codes that would facilitate midwifery becoming professionalised have not yet been determined. This study was planned to contribute to the professionalisation of midwifery by determining national ethical values and codes. A total of 1067 Turkish midwives completed the survey. The most prevalent values of Turkish midwives were care for mother–child health, responsibility and (...)

Local, Institutional, or Transnational? Social Networks of Russian Marriage Migrants in Turkey.E. Murat Özgür & Ayla Deniz - 2022 - European Journal of Women's Studies 29 (2):347-363.
This study focuses on the spatialization and institutionalization of social networks of Russian women who migrated to Turkey via marriage in the last 30 years. Specifically, it investigates how and why their social networks have been changing at the local and transnational levels. We conducted in-depth interviews with 56 women between 2014−2021. Our extensive analysis indicates that despite their newly established status via marriages, the Russian women have weak ties with the locals regardless of the migration period, preferring mostly to (...)

Transformation of history in the glass palace and burnt shadows: A postmodernist analysis.Ayesha Ashraf & Munawar Iqbal Ahmed - 2019 - Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities 58 (2):33-47.
South Asian English fiction, in recent decades, has significantly manifested its deepest concern for history and its relevance in the contemporary global scenario. The last couple of years have noticed the publication of many English novels by Indian and Pakistani authors that in fact belong to the very genre of postmodern historiographic metafiction. In fact, postmodern fiction writers usually deviate from the traditional representation of past events. The current study examines the way history writing is reconfigured in the selected postmodern (...)

Multisensory Perceptual Biases for Social and Reward Associations.Moritz Stolte, Charles Spence & Ayla Barutchu - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Linking arbitrary shapes to personal labels or reward values results in immediate processing benefits for those stimuli that happen to be associated with the self or high rewards in perceptual matching tasks. Here we further explored how social and reward associations interact with multisensory stimuli by pairing labels and objects with tones. We also investigated whether self and reward biases persist for multisensory stimuli with the label removed after an association had been made. Both high reward stimuli and those associated (...)

Why the Science and Religion Dialogue Matters: Voices from the International Society for Science and Religion.Fraser Watts & Kevin Dutton (eds.) - 2006 - Templeton Foundation Press.
Each world faith tradition has its own distinctive relationship with science, and the science-religion dialogue benefits from a greater awareness of what this relationship is. In this book, members of the International Society for Science and Religion (ISSR) offer international and multi-faith perspectives on how new discoveries in science are met with insights regarding spiritual realities. The essays reflect the conviction that “religion and science each proceed best when they’re pursued in dialogue with each other, and also that our fragmented and (...)
