Drawing on the narratives of young lower-middle-class women employed in cafés, call centers, shopping malls, and offices in Delhi, India, in this paper I identify malleability or “plasticity” of the body as an important feature of contemporary service work. As neophyte service professionals, young women mold themselves to the middle-/upper-class milieu of their workplaces through clothes, makeup, and body language. Such body plasticity can be experienced as enabling: Identifying with the image of the “New Indian Woman,” young women enter the (...) bourgeoning service economy. However, they also experience this body plasticity as threatening; bodily changes to meet the requirements of work can, at times, feel inauthentic as well as be read as promiscuous by others. I draw attention to how women appraise plastic bodies as both generative of change and a site of labor discipline, thus offering insights into the relationship among bodies, social inequalities, and contemporary service work. The task of media ethicists is not only to shine a light on the dilemmas facing our field, but also to point out what the moral issues of the day are. Why is it that some cases and issues appear on our radar, in our textbooks, web sites and journals? Using the example of how the problematic nature of the Apu character in The Simpsons escaped the attention of this author and other media ethicists, this essay explores how media ethicists (...) can be better aware of their own blind spots. Given our limited cognitive abilities and unconscious biases, I will argue that media ethicists could potentially benefit from the help of a theoretical media ethics moral machine (MeMorMach), especially in instances where they are unaware of the potential violation of an established norm. But when normative change occurs, such a device would be less useful in tracking this change and alerting them, especially to those adhering to a constructivist meta-ethical framework. The essay concludes with a call for media ethicists to pay attention to and assist so-called moral enquirers, advocates who, through personal engagement, enact normative change. (shrink)

Résumé Au 19ème siècle, on remarque la présence, dans la chimie française, d'un nombre considérable d'Alsaciens dont les contributions scientifiques ne peuvent être ignorées. Essentiellement à la suite de la guerre franco-prussienne, leur origine régionale est souvent mise en avant afin de leur attribuer une certaine singularité: mais peut-on distinguer les Alsaciens des autres chimistes français avant 1870? Forment-ils un groupe homogène de par la spécificité de leur lieu d'origine? Cet article a pour but de démontrer que, par leurs options (...) théoriques, leurs relations personnelles et professionnelles et aussi par leur participation à bien d'initiatives communes, ils se sont organisés au sein de la communauté scientifique parisienne. Parmi ces formes d'organisation, on dégage le rôle fondamentale de l'école de recherche du chimiste Adolphe Wurtz (1817–84) qui apu fonctionner comme noyau de ce qu'on peut considérer comme un vrai réseau de chimistes alsaciens à Paris, pendant la seconde moitié du 19ème siècle.
