Franz Ficker: Aesthetics; or, A Theory of the Beautiful and of Art in Its Full Scope.Tomáš Hlobil - forthcoming - Estetika: The European Journal of Aesthetics.
This essay endeavours to cover and clarify the extraordinarily long and complicated approval process – unparalleled in the history of European aesthetics – of the first Austrian court-approved university textbook of aesthetics of local provenance, Franz Ficker’s Aesthetik. The detailed account of the negotiations preceding the approval is followed by general conclusions concerning the nature of Austrian aesthetics, the operation of Austrian universities, and Austrian university policy in the period preceding the March 1848 revolution. The article includes translation of (...)

    Wittgenstein, the Self, and Ethics.John C. Kelly - 1995 - Review of Metaphysics 48 (3):567 - 590.
WHEN WITTGENSTEIN'S TRACTATUS was published it was generally identified first with Russell's logical atomism, and later with the logical positivism of the Vienna Circle. However, Wittgenstein himself claimed the work had an ethical purpose. In what has become a well-known passage from a letter to Ludwig von Ficker, the editor of Der Brenner, whose help Wittgenstein sought in trying to publish the Tractatus, he says.

  14. Ethical Supernaturalism.Rajkumar Modak - 2017 - Philosophy Pathways 217 (1):1-13.
Abstract Wittgenstein’s approach towards ethics would have remained undiscovered had he not claimed in a letter to his publisher, Ludwig Ficker that Tractatus Logico Philosophicus (TLP) was an ethical book; although all most all the points discussed in this book belonged to the domain of philosophy of logic. Only a few lines in this book from 6.4 through 6.54 are used for ethics. While in Philosophical Investigations, Wittgenstein is not interested at all to discuss anything about ethics, in his (...)

Ethics as a Condition of the World: The Inexpressible, the Transcendental and the Point of the Tractatus.Denis McManus - 2022 - Disputatio. Philosophical Research Bulletin 11.
This paper presents a reading of the Tractatus’ remarks on ethics. Drawing on work by Anselm Müller, subsequently developed by Anthony Price, the reading makes of some of Wittgenstein’s most striking and most puzzling early remarks a recognizable and insightful account of ethical experience, while also accommodating the equally striking formal quality of those remarks. The account identifies a distinctive ethical achievement that requires a distance from particular concrete goods that one might pursue and a responsiveness to those goods as (...)

Der private Briefwechsel.Theodor W. Adorno - 2003 - Graz: Droschl. Edited by Lotte Tobisch, Bernhard Kraller & Heinz Steinert.

    Prototractatus. [REVIEW]B. W. A. - 1972 - Review of Metaphysics 25 (3):575-576.
In September of 1965 G. H. von Wright discovered in Vienna a hitherto unknown notebook written in pencil by Wittgenstein. The first part contains an early, but essentially complete version of the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. Since it contains the dedication to David H. Pinsent who died May 8, 1918, von Wright dates its composition just before the final composition of the Tractatus in the summer of 1918. This is confirmed by the remaining portion of the manuscript which contains additions and further (...)

    Toward the World and Wisdom of Wittgenstein’s ‘Tractatus’. [REVIEW]K. B. J. - 1975 - Review of Metaphysics 29 (2):350-351.
This book is an important attempt to make explicit the moral and political implications and presuppositions of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. To many readers of Wittgenstein it will come as a surprise that there should be any significant political implications at all, for Wittgenstein’s work more than that of most other philosophers seems to be concerned exclusively with technical philosophical problems. Nevertheless, even before the appearance of Moran’s study, several commentators have suggested that the Tractatus is at least something more (...)
