Abstract

A emancipação política dos judeus da Europa do Iluminismo tinha como preço a assimilação cultural e a integração social, ou seja, a ruptura com as próprias raízes. Não se podia serjudeu e moderno ao mesmo tempo, até que o ideal do Iluminismo se tivesse consumado (realizado) e consumido (esgotado) no fogo da Primeira Guerra Mundial. Havia, pois, que repensar os ideais do Iluminismo a partir de umas bases distintas que permitissem a realização da universalidade. Ora é precisamente nesse contexto que se situam, antes de mais, Hermann Cohen com a sua Religião da razão a partir das fontes do Judaísmo e Franz Rosenzweig com A Estrela da Redenção. Trata-se de um pensamento critico em relação à modernidade, mas defensor dos ideais, ainda que desde uma posição em que a voz de Jerusalém se ouve tanto como de Atenas. /// The present article starts with the assumption that the political emancipation of the Jews in the Europe of the Enlightenment had as price the cultural assimilation and the social integration, i.e., the rupture with its own roots. The understanding was that one could not be at the same time Jew and modern, at least until Enlightenment had reached its fulfillment and consummation in the fires of the First World War. The task was now to rethink the ideals of the Enlightenment in accordance with new basis ordered to allow the fulfillment of universality. Hence it is in this context that, according to the author of the article, we shall read Hermann Cohens Die Religion der Vernunft aus den Quellen des Judentums and Franz Rosenzweigs Stern der Erlosung. In these authors we find both a critical approach to modernity and a defense of its ideals, but that from a standpoint in which the voice of Jerusalem is much heard as the voice of Athens.
