Historical Roots and Basic Themes of Existentialism; An Appraisal

Abstract

The goal of the study is to provide a comprehensive panorama of existentialism and offer its general point of view. It also attempts to inquire into its historical roots and explore the fundamental themes put forward by existential thinkers. However, it is claimed that existentialism as a philosophy has the potential to awaken a human person for the highest degree of existence. Existentialism addresses unavoidable questions concerning human existence like, are humans free? Does life have any meaning? Is existence prior-to the essence? What makes life authentic? And so on, such questions are deeply related to real-life situations. In connection with these questions, existentialists guide a human person in different situations of life. In this sense, it is argued that existentialism is a philosophy to be lived and practiced not merely speculated.
