Chuxiang jingjie and the Characteristics of the Spread of Catholicism in the Late Ming Dynasty
Abstract
Spread of Catholicism in the late Ming China, there is a constant "localization" process. "God born out by the solution as" the Italian missionary Aleni of a woodcut print works. Content based on the four life story of Jesus blessing the book, in the form of the late Ming popular print comic. In this work, Aleni Ricci not only inherited the "academic mission" of the tradition, but also began to seek a local scholar and the Fujian culture fit, loved by the Chinese people's images, language and media, from all walks of life to people outside the church and taught a direct missionary. This "local time" seeking the same, reflecting the will of Jesus "localization" principle to further understanding and deepening, but also reflects the spread of Catholicism toward popularization, popular new attempt. There is a constant "localization" process in the spread of Catholic in Late Ming China. Tianzhu jiangsheng chuxiang jingjie is a Chinese woodcut engraving book of the Italian missionary, Jiulio Aleni. This work takes the life story of Jesus from Gospels, and it follows a popular style of woodcut engraving comic books in late Ming dynasty. In this work, Aleni not only follows Matteo Ricci's tradition of "academic Missionaries", but also began to seek for "accommodation" with the local literati culture of Fujian. The images and language in this book are familiar to Chinese readers, so it could be easy to spread from all classes of believers to the non-believers.
