Catholicism and the Moral Reconstruction of China in the late Ming Dynasty

Abstract

Turbulent social change in the late Ming period, the feudal Tsunatsune Norm has begun to shake, but the new value system has not been established, was described as a double-sleepy times. The whole society into a "moral lost." Chinese Confucianism has been the basis of moral norms and values. Confucianism, while retaining the "days" of respect, but its content is primarily a political ethics, said the lack of life and death, spirits and other metaphysical discussion, rarely involving the origin of the universe and its ultimate concern. Confucian ethics for China's lack of a value basis and foundation of their religious beliefs. Buddhist Karma seems to provide a value once the basis and foundation, but because of the alienation and anti-social nature of Buddhism, the whole can not fundamentally improve people's morality. Neo-Confucianism in ancient China thrall to the "Heaven" and "God" and other concepts into a "Tai Chi", "reason", "gas", "Road," "heart" and other abstract philosophical category, so although the increase of Confucianism speculative nature, but also has reduced its religious sanctity, to make it more difficult than the old Confucian ethics in China providing value basis. Of course, this also was one of the important reasons of moral decline. At that time the Jesuit Matteo Ricci led the Catholic Church once again came to China, Xu and other Chinese literati not only accept Western science and technology, but also to accept the Catholic faith. With KPS as the representative of a large number of persons raised Catholic, "easy to make Confucianism Buddhism", rebuild the Chinese value system. They are trying to replace the real Catholic Church Elder of nothingness, the origin of the universe there is and the real lack of moral values ​​make up Confucianism to change "the hearts of mankind", "Xinghua Zhi Li."
