Civil philosophy and the crisis of modernity
Abstract
By introducing and discussing two books, concerning Croce’s philosophical approach to history, i.e. Giuseppe Cacciatore’s Filosofia pratica e filosofia civile nel pensiero di Benedetto Croce and Domenico Conte’s Storia universale e patologia dello spirito, the author emphasizes the peculiarity of Pietro Piovani’s Neapolitan school. Since the Contributions on Historicism, written by Fulvio Tessitore, it is possible to identify the continuous relationship between the work of Croce and different aspects of European Historicism. Cacciatore’s philosophical focus concerns the ethical and political core of Crocean books on history. Conte aims at joining the development of the philosophical thought with Croce’s intellectual biography, with particular reference to his last years
