  5. Human and Nonhuman Animals: Equal Rights or Duty of Respect?Wilfried Vanhoutte - 2012 - Philosophia 40 (2).
Contemporary philosophy is said to focus on particular issues, rather than on comprehensive syntheses. The following contribution intends to join this trend by offering some reflections on the “animal rights” debate, which is to be situated within the wider context of environmental philosophy. While classical Western concepts of man were anthropocentric, recent cultural developments have triggered a rediscovery of Nature, especially of nonhuman animals, while focusing on their affiliations with us, humans. Appropriate relations with those animals require a respectful attitude (...)

  6. On the Destiny of Moral and Religious Values in Today’s Postmodern Climate.Wilfried Vanhoutte - 2011 - Philosophia 39 (1).
Contemporary society tends to behave very ambiguously towards tradition. Religious and moral customs that are still widely practiced are also often critically questioned or simply abandoned. Similarly, attitudes towards the role of science and technology in today’s global community are highly paradoxical. Some practices reveal a deeply rooted belief in the potentials of science and technology to increase happiness, on both the individual and the collective levels. Other practices and discourses are trying to prove the opposite, recommending to treat the (...)

  8. Bernard Gert. Hobbes: Prince of Peace. [REVIEW]Wilfried Vanhoutte - 2012 - Philosophia 40 (1).
The author has a lot to tell about Hobbes. Decades of study work and teaching have provided him with both a penetrating look and a balanced interpretation of the “leading English political philosopher.” This reputation of Hobbes, he finds to be “fully deserved.” There is no reason to fear of being deceived by such a comment, since the more you read Hobbes, “the more impressive he becomes.” Bernard Gert presents Hobbes basically in five chapters, including one on Hobbes’s life and (...)

Paul Richard Blum. Philosophy of religion in the Renaissance Farnham /Burlington : Ashgate, 2010, 211p. The book begins with a preface on the status of the philosophy of religion in the Renaissance. While this could be initially understood as a continuation of the medieval tradition of reflecting on the praeambula fidei, it gradually has shifted towards a reflection sui generis on a variety of issues, including the historicity of dogmas and rituals, or religious policies, and the epistemological legitimacy of addressing (...)

  16. Normal natural deduction proofs (in classical logic).Wilfried Sieg & John Byrnes - 1998 - Studia Logica 60 (1):67-106.
Natural deduction (for short: nd-) calculi have not been used systematically as a basis for automated theorem proving in classical logic. To remove objective obstacles to their use we describe (1) a method that allows to give semantic proofs of normal form theorems for nd-calculi and (2) a framework that allows to search directly for normal nd-proofs. Thus, one can try to answer the question: How do we bridge the gap between claims and assumptions in heuristically motivated ways? This informal (...)

Purgatory: Philosophical Dimensions.Kristof Vanhoutte & Benjamin W. McCraw (eds.) - 2017 - Cham: Palgrave Macmillan.
This book examines the concept of Purgatory. However, in contradistinction to the many monographs and edited volumes published in the past 50 years devoted to historical, cultural, or theological treatments of Purgatory—especially in proportion to the voluminous output on Heaven and Hell—this collection features papers by philosophers and other scholars engaged specifically in philosophical argument, debate, and dialogue involving conceptions of Purgatory and related ideas. It exists to broaden the discussion beyond the prevailing trends in the academic literature and fills (...)

Reflections on the Foundations of Mathematics: Essays in Honor of Solomon Feferman.Wilfried Sieg, Richard Sommer & Carolyn Talcott - 2017 - Cambridge University Press.
Since their inception, the Perspectives in Logic and Lecture Notes in Logic series have published seminal works by leading logicians. Many of the original books in the series have been unavailable for years, but they are now in print once again. This volume, the fifteenth publication in the Lecture Notes in Logic series, collects papers presented at the symposium 'Reflections on the Foundations of Mathematics' held in celebration of Solomon Feferman's 70th birthday (The 'Feferfest') at Stanford University, California in 1988. 21. An abstract model for parallel computations: Gandy’s thesis.Wilfried Sieg & John Byrnes - 1999 - The Monist 82 (1):150-164.
In his classic paper On Computable Numbers Turing analyzed what can be done by a human computor in a routine, “mechanical” way. He argued that mechanical op-erations obey locality conditions and are carried out on configurations satisfying boundedness conditions. Processes meeting these restrictive conditions can be shown to be computable by a Turing machine. Turing viewed memory limitations of computors as the ultimate reason for the restrictive conditions. In contrast, Gandy analyzed in his paper Church’s Thesis and Principles for Mechanisms (...)

Justice, legitimacy, and constitutional rights.Wilfried Hinsch - 2010 - Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy 13 (1):39-54.
There is a tension between the idea of popular sovereignty and our understanding that basic constitutional rights and liberties have a normative authority which is independent from the results of democratic decision‐making procedures. On the one hand there is the claim that the content of political justice, at least as far as the basic liberties are concerned, is to be fixed solely by substantive moral and political argument, while on the other there is the claim that it is the people (...)

    Dialektische Bildungstheorie in dialektischer Kritik.Wilfried Lippitz - 1976 - Frankfurt/M.: Peter Lang.

While the Historische Kulturwissenschaft is introduced as a new way of writing history the question has to be answered what Kultur means or how it should be interpreted. The paper deals primarily with the special German notion of ‘Kultur’. The distinction between ‘intension’ and ‘extension’ is made and contrasted with both the narrow and the wide concept of ‘Kultur’. Writing history as new cultural history is shaped at least by five aspects: space, perspective, language, acting and time which are discussed (...)
