Emmanuel Levinas gave an account of radical, asymmetrical responsibility for the Other that is phenomenologically sensible in the proximity of face-to-face relation. This original arrangement, however, is not interminable. The approach of the third party equalizes and creates distance between self and Other by introducing ontology and epistemology. It is a necessary process of totalization that moves from a primordial ethics to justice and institutional fairness. However, Levinas was aware that the third party's presence brought with it a possible forgetting (...) of the Other and a covering over of radical ethics. In this presentation, we propose that the psychotherapeutic process represents a context that bears the proximal dimension described by Levinas while also representing an institution that is, in definition and purpose, totalizing. Furthermore, using a play on words that represents a significant issue in contemporary psychotherapeutic practice, we explore the common presence and impact of third-party payers on the therapeutic relationship, and how third-party payers are disingenuously a-proximal and constantly approximating; faceless and consequently effacing the patient's august dignity, causing a forgetfulness of the justice to which Levinas called institutions. Lastly, we suggest some strategies by which therapists may recover the never-absolved proximity to the Other in a profession susceptible to the a-proximal effects of third-party economics. 2012 APA, all rights reserved). The aim of this dissertation is to examine the logic of Christian revelation as it is presented in the works of Kierkegaard. I have selected for this study three primary works in which the Kierkegaardian conception of revelation is developed. Of these three works, two are pseudonymous productions: Philosophical Fragments and Concluding Unscientific Postscript , both attributed to Johannes Climacus. The third work bears the English title On Authority and Revelation, the first complete draft of which appears in Kierkegaard's private (...) papers from 1846-1847. In addition to these primary works, the vast material comprising the balance of the Kierkegaardian corpus is used eclectically. ;The concept of divine revelation, with which the validity and significance of Christian theology stands or falls, is one of the most difficult of theological concepts to explicate. Fortunately, it is not the aim of this study to present a fully developed theory of Christian revelation which can stand up to theological and philosophical scrutiny. My task is a more modest one, though not without its own peculiar difficulties. I am concerned to examine the concept of Christian revelation only as it appears in the works of Kierkegaard, and then only to the extent that it shapes the way Kierkegaard thinks about some of the central issues raised in the authorship. The single question which frames my inquiry is the following: If revelation has occurred or does occur, what does this imply about the relationship between faith and reason, the role of history in faith, the nature of religious truth, the appeal to religious authority, and the dialectic of the religious communication? By the end of World War II, religion appeared to be on the decline throughout the United States and Europe. Recent world events had cast doubt on the relevance of religious belief, and modernizing trends made religious rituals look out of place. It was in this atmosphere that the careers of Scholem, Eliade, and Corbin--the twentieth century's legendary scholars in the respective fields of Judaism, History of Religions, and Islam--converged and ultimately revolutionized how people thought about religion. Between 1949 and (...) 1978, all three lectured to Carl Jung's famous Eranos circle in Ascona, Switzerland, where each in his own way came to identify the symbolism of mystical experience as a central element of his monotheistic tradition. In this, the first book ever to compare the paths taken by these thinkers, Steven Wasserstrom explores how they overturned traditional approaches to studying religion by de-emphasizing law, ritual, and social history and by extolling the role of myth and mysticism. The most controversial aspect of their theory of religion, Wasserstrom argues, is that it minimized the binding character of moral law associated with monotheism.The author focuses on the lectures delivered by Scholem, Eliade, and Corbin to the Eranos participants, but also shows how these scholars generated broader interest in their ideas through radio talks, poetry, novels, short stories, autobiographies, and interviews. He analyzes their conception of religion from a broadly integrated, comparative perspective, sets their distinctive thinking into historical and intellectual context, and interprets the striking success of their approaches. Many methods can facilitate such integration. Still, why and how researchers should and could use SEAs remains largely unclear. In this paper we aim to relate motivations for NEST (...) researchers to include SEAs in their work, and the requirements to establish such integration from their perspectives, to existing approaches that can be used to establish integration of SEAs in the daily work of these NEST researchers. Based on our analyses, we argue that for the successful integration of SEAs in R&D practice, collaborative approaches between researchers and scholars from the social sciences and humanities seem the most successful. In order to appreciate what quantum perception may entail, we first explore several of the leading interpretations of quantum mechanics, then consider an alternative view based on the ontological phenomenology of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Martin Heidegger. Next, the philosophical analysis is brought into sharper focus by employing a perceptual model, the Necker cube, augmented by the topology of the Klein bottle. (...) In formulating an answer, we examine the nature of scientific objectivity itself, along with the paradoxical properties of light. The conclusion reached is that quantum perception requires a new kind of observation, one in which the observer of the photon adopts a concretely self-reflexive observational posture that brings her into close ontological relationship with the observed. This book addresses two significant and interrelated problems confronting modern theoretical physics: the unification of the forces of nature and the evolution of the universe. In bringing out the inadequacies of the prevailing approach to these questions, the need is demonstrated for more than just a new theory. The meanings of space and time themselves must be radically rethought, which requires a whole new philosophical foundation. To this end, we turn to the phenomenological writings of Martin Heidegger and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. (...) Their insights into space and time bring the natural world to life in a manner well-suited to the dynamic phenomena of contemporary physics. In aligning continental thought with problems in physics and cosmology, topology is employed. Phenomenological intuitions about space and time are systematically fleshed out via an unconventional approach to this qualitative branch of mathematics. Topological phenomenology is applied to such topics as quantum gravity, cosmogony, symmetry, spin, vorticity, dimension theory, Kaluza-Klein and string theories, fermion-boson interrelatedness, hypernumbers, and the mind-matter interface. Policy makers call upon researchers from the natural and social sciences to collaborate for the responsible development and deployment of innovations. Collaborations are projected to enhance both the technical quality of innovations, and the extent to which relevant social and ethical considerations are integrated into their development. This could make these innovations more socially robust and responsible, particularly in new and emerging scientific and technological fields, such as synthetic biology and nanotechnology. Some researchers from both fields have embarked on collaborative (...) research activities, using various Technology Assessment approaches and Socio-Technical Integration Research activities such as Midstream Modulation. Still, practical experience of collaborations in industry is limited, while much may be expected from industry in terms of socially responsible innovation development. Experience in and guidelines on how to set up and manage such collaborations are not easily available. Having carried out various collaborative research activities in industry ourselves, we aim to share in this paper our experiences in setting up and working in such collaborations. We highlight the possibilities and boundaries in setting up and managing collaborations, and discuss how we have experienced the emergence of ‘collaborative spaces.’ Hopefully our findings can facilitate and encourage others to set up collaborative research endeavours.
