What is the je-ne-sais-quoi? How - if at all - can it be put into words? In addressing these questions, Richard Scholar offers the first full-length study of the je-ne-sais-quoi and its fortunes in early modern Europe. He describes the rise and fall of the expression as a noun and as a topic of debate, examines its cluster of meanings, and uncovers the scattered traces of its 'pre-history'. The je-ne-sais-quoi is often assumed to belong purely to the realm of the (...) literary, but in the early modern period it serves to articulate problems of knowledge in natural philosophy, the passions, and culture, and for that reason it is approached here from an interdisciplinary perspective. Placing major figures of the period such as Montaigne, Shakespeare, Descartes, Corneille, and Pascal alongside some of their lesser-known contemporaries, Scholar argues that the je-ne-sais-quoi serves above all to capture first-person encounters with a 'certain something' that is as difficult to explain as its effects are intense. When early modern writers use the expression in this way, he suggests, they give literary form to an experience that twenty-first-century readers may recognize as something like their own. (shrink)

Second, the article refreshes semiotics methodology in very original way, by engaging the applied semiotics for furtive and instantaneous activities analysis. Third, the article is pretty clear and well structured, written in very comprehensible French. The theoretical frame it opens is thorough and far reaching. Fourth, the semiotic theory of movement comes in a very special moment when the whole world is football, but it covers also many other areas of applicability which reflect major trends such as the general gamification of life thanks to new media and digital technologies. It is crucial for semiotic theory to open its theoretic scope towards significant cultural trends and become more attractive for young researchers." Premier élément : l'article, en peu de mots, en prenant appui sur des décennies de recherche de la part de l'auteur, déploie de manière précise les termes d'une sémiotique du mouvement. Les fondements théoriques de la sémiotricité sont construits sur des approches sémiotiques bien établies et représentent un véritable développement dans le domaine. En cela, le texte ouvre un cadre passionnant pour les contributions de nombreux autres chercheurs. Deuxièmement, l'article renouvelle la sémiotique appliquée de manière très originale, l'engageant dans une approche efficace des actions instantanées et furtives; la méthodologie sémiotique en général en tire donc aussi profit. Troisième point, en plus d'être profond, avec un cadre théorique d'ampleur et de grande portée, l'article est particulièrement bien structuré et écrit dans un français très compréhensible, ce qui est un véritable gain pour sa diffusion. Enfin, quatrièmement, s'il est indéniable que le texte pourrait bénéficier d'une visibilité complémentaire due à la ferveur liée au contexte récent de la coupe du monde de football au Qatar, il couvre surtout de nombreux autres domaines d'applicabilité qui reflètent des tendances majeures telles que la gamification générale de la vie, portée par les nouveaux médias et les technologies numériques. L'on y voit une belle opportunité pour la théorie sémiotique d'ouvrir son champ à la faveur de tendances culturelles significatives; ceci est une garantie pour continuer à attirer de nouvelles générations de chercheurs. Récit de la rencontre à Port-Royal-des-Champs en janvier 1655 entre Lemaistre de Sacy, théologien janséniste, et Pascal, jeune philosophe et savant reconnu. Sacy, soucieux de préserver la foi, proscrit la lecture et l'usage de la philosophie alors que Pascal trouve chez Epictète la grandeur de l'homme soumis à la volonté de Dieu et, chez Montaigne, la misère de l'homme submergé par l'incertitude.

While proponents of social egg freezing argue that it is liberating for women, opponents contest that the technology provides an individualist solution to a social problem. This article comprises personal and academic reflections on the debate on social egg freezing from four young women studying reproductive technologies. We challenge the promotion of social egg freezing as an empowering option for women and question cultural assumptions about childbearing, the disclosure of risk, failures to consider sexual diversity and socioeconomic status, and the (...) expansion of the market in reproductive tissues. Scholarly hypertexts involve argument and explicit selfquestioning, and can be distinguished from both informational and literary hypertexts. After making these distinctions the essay presents general principles about attention, some suggestions for self-representational multi-level structures that would enhance scholarly inquiry, and a wish list of software capabilities to support such structures. The essay concludes with a discussion of possible conflicts between scholarly inquiry and hypertext.

The discussion in Perspectives on Psychological Science about criteria for scholarly merit shows a potential bias of quantitative measurements compared with informed judgments of scholarly merits. This comment argues for a selection procedure that is open for qualitative arguments.

조선 시대 유학자들의 노자 담론은 ‘벽이단론’과 ‘이유석도’의 관점에서 진행된다. 이들 관점은 주자에 의해 최초로 제기되었다. 따라서 조선의 유학자들은 주자학의 관점으로 노자 담론을 형성했다고 볼 수 있다.BR 왜 조선 유학자들은 주희의 노자 담론에 따라 노자 담론은 재생산하는가라는 문제를 제기할 수 있다. 이에 대한 대답은 철학적으로 다루지지 않았다. 이 문제를 철학적으로 해명하는 것이 이 논문의 목적이다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 미셸 푸코의 담론이론을 적용해 논의를 진행해 보았다.BR 그 결과 주희 자신이든 조선 유학자이든 간에 노자 담론의 생산에서 권력이 작동하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. (...) 그 권력은 이단 담론의 생성과 전개에서 작동된 저자의 원리, 동일성의 놀이, 담론의 경찰로 작동하고 있었다. 동일성의 놀이로 제시된 이단 담론은 맹자와 주희에게서 기원한 이단 담론이며, 담론의 경찰로서 제시된 원리들은 노자의 주석을 다양한 입장에서 생산하더라도, 결국 그 주석에 부과되는 통제의 원리로 작동하고 있었다.BR 좀 더 구체적으로 말하면 첫째, 유학자들은 오도(吾道)를 부지(扶持)하기 위한 ‘진위의 대결’의 과정에서 노자 담론을 생산한 것이었다. 둘째, 유학 내부의 담론에서 제기될 수 있는, 유학적 관점에서 통제되지 않는 노자 담론이 생성되는 것을 제한하기 위해 동일성의 놀이라는 방식으로 노자 담론을 제한한 것이다. 통제되지 않은 노자 담론을 제한하고 지배하기 위해, 다시 말해 유학에서 벗어나 노자 담론 자체를 생산하는 것을 제한하기 위한 권력의 행사인 동일성의 놀이로서 노자 담론을 생산한 것이었다.BR 결론적으로 정리하자면, 조선 유학자들의 노자 담론은 그것을 제한하고 지배하고자 한 담론 권력이 행사되고, 담론의 경찰과 담론의 동일성이 작동된 결과이다. 이는 벽이단론에서도 나타나고 노자 주석서들에서도 나타난다. 조선 유학자만의 독특한 노자 담론은 존재하지 않는다. 조선 유학자들의 노자 담론은 주희의 이단 담론에 대한 규정에 따라 ‘시원으로서의 원리’, ‘영역들’, ‘방법들’, ‘명제들’, ‘규칙과 정의들’을 충실히 따르고 있기 때문이다. 이는 이단 담론에 적용된 권력이 우연을 지배하려고 하고, 위험을 제거하기 위해 작동하고 있었기 때문이다.
