Indeed, it was his 1991 (...) major work on fiqh, Die Anfage der islamischen Jurisprudenz that radically transformed modern scholarship on the subject, hitherto dominated by a hyper-sceptical reading and interpretation of Islamic sources and history. It is therefore not surprising that the contributions in this volume by colleagues, former students, and friends, reflect the variegated specialism of the Jubilar over time and space.
