Japanese Hermeneutics: Current Debates on Aesthetics and Interpretation.Michael F. Marra (ed.) - 2002 - Honolulu, HI: University of Hawaii Press.
Japanese Hermeneutics provides a forum for the most current international debates on the role played by interpretative models in the articulation of cultural discourses on Japan. It presents the thinking of esteemed Western philosophers, aestheticians, and art and literary historians, and introduces to English-reading audiences some of Japan's most distinguished scholars, whose work has received limited or no exposure in the United States. In the first part, "Hermeneutics and Japan," contributors examine the difficulties inherent in articulating "otherness" without falling (...)

This study addresses the relationship between Japanese aesthetics and anime. There are three premises: (1) the abstract concepts promoted by Japanese aesthetics; (2) the abstract and the concrete coalesce in the visual domain; and (3) anime can help us appreciate many aspects of Japan's aesthetic legacy"--Provided by publisher.

The Aesthetics of Discontent: Politics and Reclusion in Medieval Japanese Literature.Michael F. Marra - 1991
This series of interpretations of selected classics examines premodern Japanese literature from the perspective of conflictual ideologies. Professor Marra's analysis of such works as the Ise Monogatari, the Hojoki, and Tsurezuregusa highlights the existence of discontent in the authors of the so-called high tradition and explains the means these authors used to express their social dissatisfaction in literary texts. His aim is to recover the validity of the historicist approach in literary studies by focusing on the importance of the (...)

Bachelor Japanists: Japanese aesthetics and Western masculinities.Christopher Reed - 2017 - New York: Columbia University Press.
Challenging clich's of Japanism as a feminine taste, Bachelor Japanists argues that Japanese aesthetics were central to contests over the meanings of masculinity in the West. Christopher Reed draws attention to the queerness of Japanist communities of writers, collectors, curators, and artists in the tumultuous century between the 1860s and the 1960s. Reed combines extensive archival research; analysis of art, architecture, and literature; the insights of queer theory; and an appreciation of irony to explore the East-West encounter through three (...)

Aesthetic Engagement and Soundscape: A Case of Convenience Store Woman, a Contemporary Japanese Novel.Garcia Chambers - forthcoming - Estetika: The European Journal of Aesthetics 60 (1):36-54.
The award-winning novel Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata, first published in 2016 as コンビニ人間 (Konbini ningen), has received a lot of media attention from readers of both the original Japanese version and the English translation. For some, the novel depicts the wonder and vulnerability of a culture of convenience and conformity, while others have suggested that it highlights the gender discrimination faced by women in contemporary Japan. Yet the novel is ripe for analyses from other perspectives. This paper (...)

A History of Modern Japanese Aesthetics.Michael F. Marra - 2001 - University of Hawaii Press.
This collection of essays constitutes the first history of modern Japanese aesthetics in any language. It introduces readers through lucid and readable translations to works on the philosophy of art written by major Japanese thinkers from the late nineteenth century to the present. Selected from a variety of sources (monographs, journals, catalogues), the essays cover topics related to the study of beauty in art and nature. The translations are organized into four parts. The first, "The Introduction of Aesthetics," (...)

  15. The Aesthetic Appreciation of Nature: Western and Japanese Perspectives and Their Ethical Implications.Yuriko Saito - 1983 - Dissertation, The University of Wisconsin - Madison
We often derive aesthetic pleasure from nature as well as from works of art. Although our experiences of both are analogous in some respects, there are some important differences. Since nature is not created specifically for aesthetic enjoyment it can be appreciated in more various ways than art. Hence, the distinction between aesthetic and non-aesthetic experience is crucial in examining the aesthetic appreciation of nature. ;An appreciation of any object is considered aesthetic if it is directed toward the sensuous surface (...)

The Cool-Kawaii: Afro-Japanese Aesthetics and New World Modernity, by Thorsten Botz-Bornstein, analyzes and compares African American cool culture and the Japanese aesthetics of kawaii or cute and characterizes them as expressions set against oppressive homogenizations of a technocratic world. The Cool-Kawaii sheds light on the history and development of both cultures in three main ways: First, both emerge from similar historical conditions; second, both are in search of human dignity and liberation, and finally, both kawaii and African American (...)

The Japanese sense of beauty.Shūji Takashina - 2018 - Tokyo: Japan Publishing Industry Foundation for Culture. Edited by Matt Treyvaud.
What makes Japanese art unique? In The Japanese Sense of Beauty, art critic and historian Takashina Shūji reflects on the aesthetic and philosophical sensibilities underlying Japanese art throughout its history, from the earliest calligraphy and painted screens to modern masters like Hishida Shunso and Yokoyama Taikan. Along the way, Takashina explores themes such as the relationship between subjective perspective and "flat" composition and the playful intermingling of word and image throughout the plastic arts of Japan. He also (...)

Two major hermeneutical practices in the history of interpretation in premodern Japan are located. The first--a deconstructive practice followed by medieval thinkers (Dōgen) and poets (Fujiwara Shunzei and Fujiwara Teika)--interprets reality by deferring and dispersing it in its representations. The analogies of this methodology are highlighted with what the Italian philosopher Gianni Vattimo has called "pensiero debole" (weak thought). The latter recuperates the centrality of the concept of presence whose disclosure becomes the major task of the interpreter. Examples of this (...)

Author Brett Esaki invites his audience to consider how Japanese Americans have developed various art forms to cope with, resist, and transform traumatic experiences of racism, including the mass, unlawful internment of nearly 120,000 people of Japanese descent during World War II. By examining an extended ethnographic case study, educators and students can reflect (...)

Focillon, Bergson and Buddhist aesthetics: a point in Focillon's reception of Japanese art.Bob Wilkinson - 2012 - Contrastes: Supplementos 17:275-288.
Focillon fastens exactly on a deep difference in the understanding of aesthetic contemplation in the Western and Eastern traditions. Western analyses presuppose and embody assumptions about the ontological ultimacy of individuals that are absent from Eastern traditions in which the ultimate is conceived of as nothingness. Focillon grasped this, and his views are contrasted with those of Bergson, as well as being confirmed by his contemporary, the eminent Japanese philosopher Nishida.

This essay focuses on a point in Henri Focillon's interpretation of the aesthetics of Japanese art. Focillon fastens very precisely on a deep difference which exists in the understanding of the idea of aesthetic contemplation in the Western and Eastern traditions. Western traditional analyses of contemplation presuppose and embody assumptions about the ontologicalultimacy of individuals that are absent from Eastern traditions in which the ultimate is conceived of as nothingness. Mono no Aware and Gender as Affect in Japanese Aesthetics and American Pragmatism.Johnathan Flowers - 2023 - Lanham, Maryland: Lexington Books.
Mono no Aware and Gender as Affect in Japanese Aesthetics and American Pragmatism argues that gender is best understood as a felt sense of the organization of the human body. Through Japanese aesthetics and American pragmatism, this book argues that re-understanding gender as an affect, or a feeling, can expand the ways that gender is understood, enacted, and theorized in experience.

Since World War II Japanese artists have employed two seemingly contradictory ways of working, using aesthetics, materials, artistic methods technologies, and approaches that are either radically innovative and wildly experimental, or traditional/classical. Many other artists, however, in a move that seems paradoxical. have combined the two to explore the new themes of the post-atomic period. Three narrative works dealing with the effects of the World War II war effort and the atomic bombings that ended them, Yasunari Kawabata’s novel The (...)

The Vital Lǐ 禮 in Play: Exploring the Confucian Self in Japanese Aesthetics.Yi Chen & Boris Steipe - 2022 - Journal of Japanese Philosophy 8 (1):97-128.
Confucian state doctrines have shaped Asian cultures for millennia as prescriptive codes of conduct with an emphasis on hierarchy and obligation. Yet a premise at the core of lǐ —understood as propriety, ritual, or generally a cultural grammar—is authenticity, and authentic respect cannot be commanded. What if the lǐ were to be elegant instead? Hans-Georg Gadamer analyzed play as a fusion of horizons that are absorbed into the same event, co-constituting subject and object in an aesthetic experience, and dissolving their (...)
