The Psychology of Religion: An Empirical Study of the Growth of Religious Consciousness.Edwin Diller Starbuck - 2015 - Forgotten Books.
Excerpt from The Psychology of Religion: An Empirical Study of the Growth of Religious Consciousness The author of the following pages has thought in his modesty that, since his name is as yet unknown to fame, his book might gain a prompter recognition if it were prefaced by a word of recommendation from some more hardened writer. Believing the book to be valuable, I am glad to be able to write such a preface. Many years ago Dr Starbuck, then (...)

Religious experience and the knowledge of God: the evidential force of divine encounters.Harold Netland - 2022 - Grand Rapids, Michigan: Baker Academic, a division of Baker Publishing Group.
For many Christians, personal experiences of God provide an important ground or justification for accepting the truth of the gospel. But we are sometimes mistaken about our experiences, and followers of other religions also provide impressive testimonies to support their religious beliefs. This book explores from a philosophical and theological perspective the viability of divine encounters as support for belief in God, arguing that some religious experiences can be accepted as genuine experiences of God and can provide evidence (...)

Religious fundamentalism in Iran: Religious and psychological adjustment within a Muslim cultural context.Nima Ghorbani, Zhuo Job Chen, Fatemeh Rabiee & P. J. Watson - 2019 - Archive for the Psychology of Religion 41 (2):73-88.
This first analysis of the Religious Fundamentalism Scale in Iran further examined findings that conservative religious commitments have positive adjustment implications outside the West. Religious Fundamentalism in a sample of 385 Iranian university students displayed direct relationships with Muslim religiosity and spirituality and correlated positively with the Transcendence and negatively with the Symbolism Post-Critical Beliefs factors. Religious Fundamentalism, and conservative religiosity more generally, predicted better mental health in relationship with variables related to self-regulation, narcissism, and splitting. (...)

Religious awe: Potential contributions of negative theology to psychology, "positive" or otherwise.Louise Sundararajan - 2002 - Journal of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology 22 (2):174-197.
A hallmark of Christian mysticism is negative theology, which refers to the school of thought that gives prominence to negation in reference to God. By denying the possibility to name God, negative theology cuts at the very root of our cognitive makeup--the human impulse to name and put things into categories--and thereby situates us "halfway between a 'no longer' and a 'not yet'" , a temporality in which "the past is negated, but...the present is not yet formulated" . The affective (...)

    Psychological and Religious Perspectives on Emotion.Fraser N. Watts - 1997 - Zygon 32 (2):243-260.
This article is devoted to examining theoretical issues on the interface of the psychology of religion and the psychology of emotion, something which recently has been surprisingly neglected. The broad range of psychological components involved in emotion, and the importance of emotional processes in religion, make it a particularly relevant area of general psychology as far as religion is concerned. The first issue to be examined is the centrality of emotion (or feeling) in religion and the extent to which religion (...)

Psychological aspects of the functioning of religious values.Ganna V. Pyrog - 2006 - Ukrainian Religious Studies 39:93-102.
The relevance of the study of the problem of Christian axiology is due to the growing interest in religion and the associated change in world outlook and values in contemporary Ukrainian society. The study of religious values is caused by the urgent problem of finding universal moral values of social development and clarifying the content, structure and nature of their functioning. However, all the basic principles of Christian doctrine acquire character of value only in the presence of subjective attitude, (...)

Religious Development Psychology in the Context of Ecological Theory.Fatih Kandemi̇r - 2018 - Cumhuriyet İlahiyat Dergisi 22 (3):1433-1456.
The effects of heredity and the environment on the development of human being, which is a multidimensional being, have been discussed for many years. Studies on the religious development of man were also influenced by these discussions. In this context, in order to better understand the nature of religious development, some theories such as behavioral, cognitive or stage theories have emerged. In a sense, these theories have also identified the direction of religious development. However, many of these (...)

The present volume has been compiled from notes taken down at the time by three of the students: Rush Rhees, Yorick Smythies, and James Taylor. They have been supplemented by notes of conversations on Freud (to whom reference was made in the course on aesthetics) between Wittgenstein and Rush Rhees, and by notes of some lectures on religious belief. As very (...)

    The Psychology of Religious Dogma.Robert H. Thouless - 1930 - Philosophy 5 (20):568-.
The psychologist finds himself in disagreement with a method of treating religious dogma current amongst many philosophers and theologians who regard it as a purely intellectual matter with an entirely intellectual history. This tradition belongs not only to philosophers and theologians; students of comparative religions have, in the past, erred in the same way. Tylor, for example, lays it down as the first condition for research into primitive religions that “the religious doctrines and practices examined … are treated (...)
