This book introduces the work of an important medieval Islamic philosopher who is little known outside the Persian world. Afdal al-Din Kashani was a contemporary of a number of important Muslim thinkers, including Averroes and Ibn al-Arabi. Kashani did not write for advanced students of philosophy but rather for beginners. In the main body of his work, he offers especially clear and insightful expositions of various philosophical positions, making him an invaluable resource for those who would like to learn the (...) basic principles and arguments of this philosophical tradition but do not have a strong background in philosophy. To say ‘mysticism versus philosophy’ in the context of Islamic civilization means something far different from what it has come to signify in the West, where many philosophers have looked upon mysticism as the abandonment of any attempt to reconcile religious data with intelligent thought. Certainly the Muslim mystics and philosophers sometimes display a certain mutual opposition and antagonism, but never does their relationship even approach incompatibility.

Mulla Sadra's primary philosophical project is to map out the path of achieving the soul's perfection. His several well-known contributions to the philosophical vocabulary, such as the "systematic ambiguity" of existence and "substantial motion," were all developed to explain how the soul enters into this world through corporealization and departs from it by way of spiritualization. His remarkably detailed investigations of the modalities of afterworldly experience simply illustrate his desire to explain the full range of possibilities that are open to (...) the h uman soul. In order to grasp the role of perception in his overall project, it is necessary to understand the end toward which perception is directed and the nature of its final fruition. The soul perceives by nature, so much so that perception enters into its very definition. In and of themselves, however, the varieties of perception possessed by the animal soul do not suffice for the achievement of human perfection, though perception remains an essential attribute of the soul. Human efforts to cleanse perception of distortion play a key role in the soul's unfolding. The most important concept here is probably tajrid, "disengagement", which designates the act of freeing perception from its entrancement by embodied and materialised forms and training it to focus on the forms in themselves, that is, the forms in their intellective existence, where they are innately disengaged and "separate" from every trace of material existence. The final goal is the transmutation of perception through the full development of the acquired intellect. Then the soul will be able to perceive the forms for what they truly are on all planes of existence, including the endless worlds of the afterlife. (shrink)

One of the key terms employed in defining the nature of the Islamicintellectual tradition is taḥqīq, “realization” or “ verifi cation”. Literally, theword means to search out the ḥaqq of things, which is their truth, rightness,appropriat eness, and at the same time, the word implies the correct andproper human response to this ḥaqq. The nature of taḥqīq is suggested by theprophetic prayer that Rumi often recites, “Our Lord, show us things as theyare.”taḥqīq is often discussed as a methodology by the (...) Muslim philosophers andtheologians, and among Sufis, Ibn Arabi and his followers considered it thebasic goal of human becoming. It is always associated with properdiscernment and correct use of intelligence. As for Rumi, he is oftenrepresented as denigrating intellect and elevating love, but it needs to beremembered that the intellect he denigrates is the one-eyed rational mind, notthe eye that sees with taḥqīq. Islamic Intellectualism is dead: or so argues William Chittick in this new book. Whilst many may say that Islamic studies thrives as a subject, Chittick points to the words of one of his former Professors when describing young colleagues: they know everything one can possibly know about a text, except what it says. Indeed, Chittick states that it is impossible to understand ancient Islamic texts without the years of contemplative study that are anathema to the modern education system. While modern (...) intellectuals with faith often treat their studies and faith in two separate spheres, Chittick argues that it is essential to return to the ways of the ancient Sufis, who viewed knowledge of the soul, the world, and God as an extension of the same thing. Sadr al-Din Muhammad Shirazi, more commonly called Mulla Sadra, was one of the grand scholars of later-period Islamic philosophy and has grown to become one of the best-known Muslim philosophers. _Iksir al-'arifin_, or _Elixir of the Gnostics_, is unique among Sadra's writings in that it reworks and amplifies an earlier Persian work, the _Jawidan-nama_ by Afdal al-Din Kashani, or Baba Afdal. The underlying theme of Sadra's amplification is emblematic of Muslim philosophy: the importance of self-knowledge in an individual's journey of (...) "Origin and Return," the soul's origins with God and its eventual return to Him. Everything, Sadra says, is on such a path, gradually disengaging from the material world and returning to a transcendent essence—all leading to a final fruition in which everything in the universe returns to God and finds permanent happiness.
