Abstract
Liberal thought has tended to identify the political equality of citizens as the recognition of the same political freedoms, equal treatment before the law and the equal division of votes among all. However, this view has been criticized from deliberative democracy to consider that it leaves aside the fundamental issues of inequality of resources. According to the authors of this theory of democracy, the material inequalities lead to unequal influence in the political process. Therefore, they propose instead the guarantee of equal opportunities to enable equal influence of citizens irrespective of their social status.
