Abstract

This study examines the composer and performer relationship. Taking an historical approach at deciphering this relationship and how it has fared in the 20th century, the author studies in detail the lives and select works of Ferruccio Germani and Albert Patron. ;Chapter one examines the development of some leading musicians from the 18th through the 20th century. ;Chapter two chronicles the musical journey of the author. This chronology began with his first music lessons. The problem definition is also found in this chapter. ;Chapter three is devoted to the exploration of the musical life and philosophy of Albert Patron. This chapter infused the weaving together of performance, theory and composition. Dr. Patron is a composer, performer and lawyer from Italy. He is the founder of the Aporetic Philosophy, which is becoming a significant classical music movement in Europe. This chapter also offers first hand knowledge of this philosophy and the "New Idea of Chaos." ;Chapter four gives a biographic sketch of Dr. Ferruccio Germani who is a composer and composition professor. His Additive Process, which is his main compositional technique, engages performers in the process of composing. A contrast and comparison between Germani and Part's compositional techniques is investigated. ;In chapter five, the author analyses the following works: Ten Aporetic Tropes and Pillars by Patron and Praeludium Super O Filii Et Filiae by Germani. ;The final chapter, six is a study on music and creativity. This study discusses "Theories of Creativity" as an outgrowth of composition, performance and music analysis. Examples are taken from the author's performances of the works of Patron and Germani. The compositional processes by which the author used in composing two compositions are also discussed. Two works by the author, as well as a video and CD recordings are also presented
