Abstract

The Fourth Section of the new Constitution passed by the Fifth Session of Fifth National People's Congress has once more stipulated that the Five-Star Red Flag is the national flag, and has specially passed a resolution restoring the "March of the Volunteers" as the national anthem. The national flag and national anthem are symbols of a nation's sovereignty and dignity and concentrated expressions of its patriotic spirit. Since the ten years of turmoil, however, China's national anthem has no longer been sung, and many young people and children do not even know its lyrics or understand their significance. The national flag, too, is very dim in people's perceptions. Hence, we should use the current NPC resolution on the national flag and its reconfirmation of the national anthem as an opportunity to initiate universal education on loving the national flag and national anthem among the general public and young people and children in particular.
