Abstract

Has classical scholarship anything to do with philosophy ? In so far as philological criticism promoted the exercice of singular judgement on texts, it can be regarded as having contributed to the emergence of critical philosophy, as a philosophy based on judgement, by Kant. This paper analyzes the relationship between philological and philosophical criticism from the generalization of the (philological) Ars critica by Jean Le Clerc (1697), the leader of the European République des Lettres, through its comment by Christoph August Heumann, one of the prominent German Polyhistor, in his comments De arte critica (1712), till the well-known Critique of pure reason (1781), that assumes only the intellectual gestus of the philological criticism, without its textual support
