A Brief History of the Genesis of the New Schools' Inspection System

Abstract

The Education (Schools) Act 1992 introduced for the first time a requirement that all state schools in England and Wales should be inspected on a regular basis. This paper looks at the political background to the introduction of the Bill, and at the controversies and pressures which gave the Act its final shape.
