Abstract

Il saggio descrive l’attuale situazione dell’umanesimo nei termini di un’analogia tra la passata opposizione ad esso da parte della religione e l’opposizione che incontra oggi da parte della visione scientifica del mondo. La tesi principale del saggio è che la nostra comprensione di ciò che è l’uomo non deve essere semplicemente derivata da una di queste ‘teorie del tutto’ e che è necessaria un’indagine prioritaria e indipendente della natura umana. Questo è il compito che l’umanesimo deve assolvere ai nostri giorni e il pensiero di Heidegger, malgrado il suo noto rifiuto dell’umanesimo, può servire da base per una tale indagine. La discussione è condotta principalmente contro la pretesa da parte delle scienze naturali di imporre una cornice ontologica per il concetto di essere umano, ma sono presi in esame e rifiutati una serie di altri motivi di disaffezione nei confronti dell’umanesimo.This essay interprets the present situation of humanism in terms of an analogy between the opposition it has met with from religion and the opposition it currently encounters from the scientific world-view. Its general thesis is that our understanding of what a human being is must not be simply derived from either of these “theories of everything” and that a prior and independent account of human being is needed. That is the task of humanism in our time and it is argued that in spite of his well-known rejection of humanism Heidegger’s thought can serve as the basis for such account. This discussion deals mainly with the claim of the natural sciences to dictate the ontological framework for a concept of human being but a number of other grounds of dissatisfaction with humanism are considered and rebutted
