Abstract

The belief in demons is widespread in Islamic societies. Demons are frequently cited in the Koran and the Words of the Prophet. The author traces their history using Arabic and Persian sources. Demons occur with special frequency in boundary situations whether spatial, temporal, or moral. The examined sources yield important insights into the present-day belief in demons."
