Abstract

Jane Addams was a leader in the U.S. settlement house movement and was active in many municipal, state, and national social reform causes during the Progressive Era and beyond. Her impact extended well beyond the United States. She became heavily involved in international peace efforts and in 1931, became the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Addams authored a number of books and articles, some penned for wide audiences.
