Abstract
The paper analyses the relationship between the symbolic construction of America and the tradition of utopian thinking. Its starting point is the assumption that there is a double dialectical movement between the notions of identity and otherness in the utopia, with different interconnections of the social imagination regarding the European and the American identity. Europe reinvents itself through its utopias and America remains inextricably related to the birth of utopia as a literary genre, adopting and re-signifying it more in a practical than in a literary sense.
