Abstract

The introduction of Western chemical theories was a landmark in the development of modern science in China. The way such theories were introduced and assimilated not only illustrates the historical circumstances of the transmission and development of modern science in China, but also reflects the conflict between modern scientific concepts and traditional values in a non-European setting. The major part of the most important theories were introduced into China by 1901 and became the fundamental materials for building the subject. These theories and concepts were fresh to the Chinese and inevitably made a significant impact and influence which extended beyond the development of the science itself.
