Abstract

This study presents an interpretation of Nietzsche's Ubermensch and Ubermenschlichkeit that, unlike other interpretations, more accurately captures both the importance of the concept itself and the significance of Nietzsche's philosophical project. Most interpretations fall into one of two groups "Ubermensch as ideal model" and "Ubermensch as idealized attitude." As presented in the literature, both kinds of interpretation are found to be deficient and in much need of clarification and rigorous analysis. Progress toward understanding Nietzsche's meaning in his use of the Ubermensch concept can be made only if distinctions within the two kinds of interpretation are delineated and explored. ;My interpretation consists of a synthesis of the two readings: the Ubermensch must be understood as one kind of ideal model of human perfection, but a model of human perfection that incorporates an attitude of aesthetic evaluation. The realm of the aesthetic, often overlooked by some commentators, is vital to understanding Nietzsche's philosophical project. This approach provides the best means for understanding Nietzsche's philosophical project as a whole as well as certain other concepts within Nietzsche's philosophy. I argue that Nietzsche's conception of the Ubermensch, once properly understood, has much to offer, not only to the study of Nietzsche's philosophy, but also to the study and appreciation of philosophy proper
