Abstract

In "Das neue Denken," the supplementary essay to The Star of Redemption, Franz Rosenzweig states that his Notes to the poetry of Jehuda Halevi provide an example of the practical application of his philosophic method, speech-thinking. The question posed here is simply: How do the Notes exemplify speech-thinking? ;Following a translation of the Notes into English, an analysis of speech-thinking is undertaken. In this analysis we examine Rosenzweig's philosophy of translation, his concept of a universal language, and finally, since speech-thinking involves belief in God, we enquire into religious experience. Based upon this analysis, an attempt is then made to answer the question and to consider speech-thinking as a possible genre for doing philosophy. The concluding chapter tries to locate Rosenzweig in the various contexts ranging from his lifetime to the present
