Jan Hendrik van den Berg Answers Some Questions.J. H. van den Berg & Robert D. Romanyshyn - 2008 - Janus Head 10 (2):377-383.
In this interview with Jan Hendrik van den Berg, the Dutch phenomenologist and psychiatrist addresses the origins of his work, his most significant influences, and the purpose of metabletic phenomenology in the modern age. In the course of the interview. Dr. Van den Berg provides a basic overview of his work, and highlights the central finding of his metabletic analyses: a loss of wonder before nature, which results from the more fundamental loss of genuine spirituality in the modern (...)

Intergenerational conflict over grandparental investment.Tim W. Fawcett, Pieter van den Berg, Franz J. Weissing, Justin H. Park & Abraham P. Buunk - 2010 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 33 (1):23-24.
Selection on grandparental investment is more complex than Coall & Hertwig (C&H) propose. Patterns of investment are subject to an intergenerational conflict over how resources should be distributed to maximize fitness. Grandparents may be selected to distribute resources unevenly, while their descendants will be selected to manipulate investment in their own favor. Here we outline the evolutionary basis of this conflict.

Die invloed van meta-teorieë op basisteorieë in die beoefening van die Praktiese Teologie.H. P. Van den Berg & T. F. J. Dreyer - 1995 - HTS Theological Studies 51 (1):207-223.
Meta-theories, base-theories and theories of practice in Pratical Theology The problem of meta-theories and base-theories, their interaction and the influence of each on the scientific process, have widely been debated in practical theology. In South Africa two meta-theories namely the system- theory together with the theory that social science is busy with the study of actions, are having the greater deal of attention. The purpose of this article is to point out the fact that an early and absolute choice of (...)

Concerning the Festive and the Mundane.J. H. van den Berg - 1997 - Journal of Phenomenological Psychology 28 (2):196-234.
The festive and the quotidian offer two fundamentally different perspectives on the human world. The quotidian attitude opens to us a workaday world structured by mental and physical barriers which require to be leveled or removed. The festive attitude gives access to a world of the threshold in which we play the role of host and guest and in which it is possible for things and living beings to make their personal appearance. Modernity can be understood as an era in (...)

Proclus On Hesiod's Works And Days And ‘didactic’ Poetry.Robbert M. van den Berg - 2014 - Classical Quarterly 64 (1):383-397.
In their introduction to the recent excellent volume Plato & Hesiod, the editors G.R. Boys-Stones and J.H. Haubold observe that when we think about the problematic relationship between Plato and the poets, we tend to narrow this down to that between Plato and Homer. Hesiod is practically ignored. Unjustly so, the editors argue. Hesiod provides a good opportunity to start thinking more broadly about Plato's interaction with poets and poetry, not in the least because the ‘second poet’ of Greece represents (...)

    A generic view of classic microbial growth models.H. A. van den Berg - 1998 - Acta Biotheoretica 46 (2):117-130.
General theoretical aspects are reviewed of models for microbial growth and endogenous metabolism. The focus is on a generic cell model with two components. Growth is represented as the increase of one of these components (the structural scaffolding or 'frame'). A novel feature of the present generic model is the explicit modelling of (partial) metabolic shutdown under conditions where maintenance requirements cannot be met.Two different approaches to mechanistic underpinnings for the classic models are outlined. The first approach is based on (...)

The social costs of punishment.Pieter van den Berg, Lucas Molleman & Franz J. Weissing - 2012 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 35 (1):42-43.
Lab experiments on punishment are of limited relevance for understanding cooperative behavior in the real world. In real interactions, punishment is not cheap, but the costs of punishment are of a different nature than in experiments. They do not correspond to direct payments or payoff deductions, but they arise from the repercussions punishment has on social networks and future interactions.

    Justification for a home-based education programme for kidney patients and their social network prior to initiation of renal replacement therapy.E. K. Massey, M. T. Hilhorst, R. W. Nette, P. J. H. Smak Gregoor, M. A. van den Dorpel, A. C. van Kooij, W. C. Zuidema, R. Zietse, J. J. V. Busschbach & W. Weimar - 2011 - Journal of Medical Ethics 37 (11):677-681.
In this article, an ethical analysis of an educational programme on renal replacement therapy options for patients and their social network is presented. The two main spearheads of this approach are: (1) offering an educational programme on all renal replacement therapy options ahead of treatment requirement and (2) a home-based approach involving the family and friends of the patient. Arguments are offered for the ethical justification of this approach by considering the viewpoint of the various stakeholders involved. Finally, reflecting on (...)

Chervenak and McCullough, authors of the most acknowledged ethical framework for maternal–fetal surgery, rely on the ‘ethical–obstetrical’ concept of the fetus as a patient in order to determine what is morally owed to fetuses by both physicians and the women who gestate them in the context of prenatal surgery. In this article, we reconstruct the argumentative structure of their framework and present an internal criticism. First, we analyse the justificatory arguments put forward by the authors regarding the moral status of (...)

    Randomized Controlled Trials of Maternal‐Fetal Surgery: A Challenge to Clinical Equipoise.H. C. M. L. Rodrigues & P. P. van den Berg - 2012 - Bioethics 28 (8):405-413.
This article focuses on maternal-fetal surgery (MFS) and on the concept of clinical equipoise that is a widely accepted requirement for conducting randomized controlled trials (RCT). There are at least three reasons why equipoise is unsuitable for MFS. First, the concept is based on a misconception about the nature of clinical research and the status of research subjects. Second, given that it is not clear who the research subject/s in MFS is/are, if clinical equipoise is to be used as a (...)

Practice variation in the informed consent procedure for thrombolysis in acute ischemic stroke: a survey among neurologists and neurology residents.Sander M. van Schaik, Renske M. Van den Berg-Vos, Bastiaan C. ter Meulen, Marieke C. Visser, Frank de Beer, Jos P. L. Slenders & Valentijn J. Zonjee - 2021 - BMC Medical Ethics 22 (1):1-9.
BackgroundObtaining informed consent for intravenous thrombolysis in acute ischemic stroke can be challenging, and little is known about if and how the informed consent procedure is performed by neurologists in clinical practice. This study examines the procedure of informed consent for intravenous thrombolysis in acute ischemic stroke in high-volume stroke centers in the Netherlands.MethodsIn four high volume stroke centers, neurology residents and attending neurologists received an online questionnaire concerning informed consent for thrombolysis with tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA). The respondents were (...)
