Wer die Entwicklung der philosophischen Forschung der letzten zehn Jahre mit aufmerksamem Blicke verfolgte, dem konnte es nicht entgehen, dass in der Auffassung des Verhältnisses von Psychologie und Logik eine Wandlung eintrat oder sich wenigstens anbahnte. Anfangs hatte es den Anschein, als ob die Psychologie die Stellung einer ersten und herrschenden Disciplin erhalten sollte. Das Erkennen und Denken sind doch Bewusstseinsthatsachen und anderseits Voraussetzungen aller Wissenschaften und somit auch der Philosophie. Was lag näher, als die Wissenschaft von den Bewusstseinsthatsachen, die (...) Psychologie, als grundlegende philosophische Disciplin zu betrachten, ja noch mehr, sie zur Grundlage aller Wissenschaften zu machen. Allmählich aber brach sich der Gedanke Bahn, dass vom Erkennen und Denken als Bewusstseinsthatsachen das Erkannte und Gedachte sorgfältig unterschieden werden müsse und dass die Untersuchung hierüber eher das Recht in Anspruch nehmen könne als Voraussetzung aller Wissenschaften und als grundlegende philosophische Disciplin zu gelten. So trat die Logik an die Stelle der Psychologie; sie nahm wieder, wie ehemals in der Philosophie, unter den philosophischen Disciplinen die erste Stelle ein. Aber Hand in Hand damit ging auch eine andere Auffassung der Logik. Man begnügte sich nicht mehr mit einer Behandlung der blossen Formen des Denkens, sondern Fragen, die den Inhalt des Denkens und Erkennens, das Gedachte und Erkannte betreffen, wurden in immer grösserer Zahl in die Logik hineingezogen. Die Logik wurde aus einer formalen Disciplin, zu der sie unter dem Einflusse Kants geworden war, in eine erkenntnistheoretische Disciplin umgestaltet. Das hatte seinen Grund nicht bloss in der Entwicklung der philosophischen Forschung, sondern wird auch durch die Natur der Sache gefordert. (shrink)

In this article I offer an opinionated overview of the central elements of Kant’s philosophical methodology during the critical period. I begin with a brief characterization of how Kant conceives of the aims of human inquiry – focusing on the idea that inquiry ideally aims at not just cognition (Erkenntnis), but also the more demanding cognitive achievements that Kant labels insight (Einsehen) and comprehension (Begreifen). Then I explore the implications of this picture for philosophy — emphasizing Kant’s distinction between critical (...) and doctrinal phases of philosophical inquiry, with the first of these playing both a negative and a positive role with respect to the second. Then, I will argue that this positive role is possible, according to Kant, only insofar as philosophy follows what I call a “capacities-first” methodology – that is, one that treats basic cognitive capacities (such as reason) and their self-conscious activities as fundamental (in both a cognitive sense and in an explanatory sense) for the sort of philosophy human beings are capable of. It is this methodology, I will argue, that allows Kant to introduce the first principles that philosophy in its doctrinal phase requires in a manner that is neither arbitrary nor (at least obviously) incompatible with Kant’s own critical restrictions on cognition. I conclude by discussing some of the implications of this methodological picture – including the methodological significance of self-consciousness and regressive or “transcendental” arguments, Kant’s distinction between analytic and synthetic methods in philosophy, and Kant’s conception of reason as autonomous. Using constructs from statistical physics it can be shown that the problems of inferring what cause our sensory inputs and learning causal regularities in the sensorium can be resolved using exactly the same principles. Furthermore, inference and learning can proceed in a biologically plausible fashion. The ensuing scheme rests on (...) Empirical Bayes and hierarchical models of how sensory information is generated. The use of hierarchical models enables the brain to construct prior expectations in a dynamic and context-sensitive fashion. This scheme provides a principled way to understand many aspects of the brain's organisation and responses. In this paper, we suggest that these perceptual processes are just one emergent property of systems that conform to a free-energy principle. The free-energy considered here represents a bound on the surprise inherent in any exchange with the environment, under expectations encoded by its state or configuration. A system can minimise free-energy by changing its configuration to change the way it samples the environment, or to change its expectations. These changes correspond to action and perception, respectively, and lead to an adaptive exchange with the environment that is characteristic of biological systems. This treatment implies that the system's state and structure encode an implicit and probabilistic model of the environment.
