“Logic and Agon” is the text of a lecture given in Rome in 1958 by the German philosopher and mathematician Paul Lorenzen. In this inaugural text are laid the foundations of the dialogic logic, which represents an alternative approach to the question of meaning and logical truth, based on a dynamic formalism. Through the enrichment of the standard approach to logic with original tools, it allows a philosophical explanation of the foundations of the concept of formal validity. Clément (...) Lion proposes an unpublished French translation of this text as well as a presentation, in which he tries to show that the initial ambition of Paul Lorenzen was not so much to propose a new logical formalism as to question in principle any enterprise based on the use of such a formalism. The discussion “scientism vs. dialectic” centers around the problem of value-judgements since Max Weber.Scientism holds the thesis that in all scholarly disciplines (whether politics, economics, law or the sciences) the value-free methods of the sciences should be followed. The dialectical scholars, following Kant, Hegel and Marx claim on the other hand the primacy of practical reason, i.e. that reason can (and should) justify norms. After an historical introduction into the controversy, this lecture sketches how the dialectical thesis can be proven. (...) The new approach consists in a critical reconstruction ofall the words relevant for the discussion, beginning with such ethical modalities as “obligatory,” “permissible.” With these words we judge about aims: the judgements are norms of the form, e.g., “Under the condition C, the aim A is obligatory” (in Symbols: C Δ A).The task in practical reason is to justify such norms. Practical philosophy has to provide the basic vocabulary and the principles of justification. It starts with basic terms of the philosophy of mind as “wanting” and “willing.” The teaching method has to be described without using these words. (For all details cf.Normative Logic and Ethics, B.J. Mannheim, 1969.) In the same sense as “true” opinions are the result of reasonable discussions in which all participants try to overcome (“transcend”) their merely subjective opinions, it is the result of “transsubjective” argumentation whether in a certain situation an aim is (morally) required or forbidden. This categorical imperative of transcending all mere subjectivity is a “formal” principle for justifying norms. Material norms are justifiable only by investigating the genesis of the cultural situation in which they are applied. This leads, in a critical reconstruction of a method of Hegel (especially in his “philosophy or right”), to the formulation of a “dialectical” method as a spiral movement from factual geneses to normative geneses.By this method philosophy does not prescribe any “values” but prescribes how the cultural sciences should proceed in establishing material norms. Es gibt drei verschiedene "Anwendungsgebiete" der Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie: Glücksspiele, statistische Gesetze in den Naturwissenschaften und wirtschaftliche Entscheidungen bei Risiko. Der probabilistische "Dualismus" versucht die verschiedenen Anwendungsgebiete dadurch verständlich zu machen, daß zwei "Wahrscheinlichkeitsbegriffe" unterschieden werden: die statistische Wahrscheinlichkeit als eine "theoretische Größe" der Physik und die personelle Wahrscheinlichkeit der Entscheidungstheorie. Die Theorie der Glücksspiele bildet in beiden Fällen einen trivialen Spezialfall: das "ideale" Würfelspiel ist zugleich ein Spezialfall des statistisch zu untersuchenden Werfens von polyederförmigen Körpern und ein Spezialfall entscheidungstheoretisch zu behandelnder (...) Wetten . Es soll im folgenden gezeigt werden, daß eine konstruktive Theorie der Glücksspiele einen Wahrscheinlichkeitsbegriff liefert, für den die Kolmogorow-Axiome gelten - und daß sich dann sowohl die statistische Physik als auch die Entscheidungstheorie als Anwendungen dieses einen Wahrscheinlichkeitsbegriffes begründen lassen. Es ergibt sich dabei allerdings, daß die Gleichsetzung der Wahrscheinlichkeitsfelder mit den Modellen der Kolmogorow-Axiome nicht gerechtfertigt ist: Jedes Wahrscheinlichkeitsfeld ist ein Kolmogorowfeld - die Umkehrung folgt nicht. Die Einordnung des De Finettischen Gesetzes der großen Zahlen in die konstruktive Theorie zeigt, daß der Grundlagenstreit um "objektiv" und "subjektiv" nicht zwei Wahrscheinlichkeitsbegriffe erfordert, sondern zwei Anwendungen eines Begriffes. Constructivism. This is an unpublished lecture read 5 years ago stating the program of constructive 'Wissenschaftstheorie' (i.e. philosophy of the sciences and humanities). Its publication now is an attempt to clarify the muddle documented in the issue 23/2 of this journal, which discussed radical constructivism (referring to biological evolution) and constructionism (referring to psychological genesis). The muddle is caused by the uncritical use of 'elaborated' speech (Bildungssprache) with terms such as: empirical, metaphysical, explanation, description, reality, actuality, object, entity, etc.). Constructivism (...) as first tought in Erlangen reconstructs its own elaborated code for use in the constructive Wissenschaftstheorie. All constructions (reconstructions) start from practice with the language reduced to unelaborated talk within practice. This is called the 'practicist' turn of Wissenschaftstheorie. This turn is limited to scientific or humanistic disciplines supporting common action in response to precritical needs, especially war and hunger. Traditional disciplines can be reformed to serve this purpose. The lecture sketches the beginnings of such a reform for mathematics and technology (including physics as a step towards better technology) and for ethical politics - in contrast to strategies for more power - (including history as a step towards more consensus). The sketch follows the terminological proposal worked out in my 'Lehrbuch' of constructive Wissenschaftstheorie (1987). Logical particles are introduced dialogically, modalities are defined syntactically. The compatibility of relativistic physics with constructive theories of space and time (protophysics) is shown. For ethical politics the starting point is, that we live in states with laws enforced with respect to all citizens alike - and that we live in a post-traditional pluralism of ways of life (Lebensformen). Without the rhetoric of values and without the abstraction of human rights, it is shown how an enlightened style of argumentation can transform our states into 'republics' with a compatible plurality of ways of life. Whether such enlightened argumentation has a chance of being accepted by intellectuals (before they have destroyed our world) - this question remains unanswered. (shrink)

Presents for the first time in English, this 1967 text which came to be known as the 'bible' of a new movement in German philosophy of language, the 'Erlanger School.' This school of linguistic philosophy's treatment of language is rooted in the tradition of transcendentalism, and bases its system on Kant and his Continental successors. For the Erlanger School, 'language is not just a fact we discover...but a human cultural accomplishment whose construction reason can and should be controlled.' Nach P. Janich wird eine "Uhr" definiert als ein Gerät, bei dem sich ein Punkt längs einer Geraden gleichförmig bewegt. Zur Definition von "gleichförmig" wird erst die "Ähnlichkeit" uhrenfrei definiert. Anschließend kann die "Eindeutigkeit" der Zeitmessung dadurch bewiesen werden, daß die Ähnlichkeit aller Uhren bewiesen wird. Die Gleichförmigkeit läßt sich jedoch, wie hier gezeigt werden soll, auch schon vor der Ähnlichkeit definieren.
