Contains the first volume of a new trilogy of Avicenna's _Physics_ and deals with that part of the _Shifā’_ which concerns physics and natural philosophy, in Latin the _Liber primus naturalium_.

In the years 1961-1972 Marie-Thirhse d'Alverny published in "Archives d'Histoire Doctrinale et Littiraire du Moyen Age 11 fascicles of a study of the codicological tradition of the Latin Avicenna. In these she identifies and describes more than 150 Latin manuscripts of the Avicennan corpus preserved in European libraries, thus laying the foundation for work later published in the "Avicenna Latinus series. These fascicles are photomechanically reprinted here, together with hitherto unpublished material concerning another 30 manuscripts compiled from (...) Professor d'Alverny's papers by Simone van Riet and Pierre Jodogne. The compilers have also added a list of corrigenda as well as an index of manuscripts discussed and an index of names and works. After having developed his theory of being, the causes and theology, Avicenna studies in chapter 7 of book IX of Philosophia prima the end of human beings. In this paper I analyze Avicenna’s considerations from a metaphysical perspective, and the importance that metaphysics has in the education of human desire. This education must be developed on metaphysical grounds because human being’s most proper desire does not match that of our sensitive desires. This kind of desire is not immediate (...) to our sensory experience, but is known through the arguments placed at the end of the Metaphysics. Thus, metaphysics as an essential feature of the education of human desire might allow us to distinguish different kinds of men. This attitude leads to the classification between ordinary souls and holy souls, i.e. those which enjoy the pleasure of knowledge and those which not. (shrink)

Janssens’s careful edition brings to a close the publication of the Medieval Latin version of the Avicennian appropriation of Aristotle’s Physics. Avicenna’s “encyclopedia” called al-Shifâ’ comprises a series of writings on natural philosophy. The first of them corresponds to the Physics, and Janssens gives here the translation of the third treatise of this book, made in Spain in the twelfth and the thirteenth centuries.Editing the Medieval Latin text of Avicenna’s Physics is fraught with difficulties. Uma das particularidades da recepção do pensamento de Algazel entre os pensadores latinos medievais foi o fato de ele ter sido considerado um sequax Avicennae. As críticas que Algazel direcionou a Avicena não foram conhecidas em um primeiro momento de modo que sua obra influenciou positivamente a recepção do pensamento aviceniano. O objetivo do presente artigo é passar em revista o modo como as versões latinas da Lógica e da Metafísica de Algazel transmitem a tese aviceniana da existência como acidente (...) da essência. O presente artigo será divido em duas partes. Na primeira, defenderemos que a Lógica de Algazel oferece uma caracterização da distinção em termos puramente lógicos ao passo que, na segunda, perguntaremos se a distinção recebe, na Metafísica, uma interpretação ontológica, ou seja, se implica uma distinção real entre essência e existência. The author presents a critical edition of the Latin treatise De mineralibus, which was generally attributed to Aristotle in the Middle Ages, but is in fact an abridgement of two chapters from Avicenna’s Kitāb al-Šifā’ compiled and translated from Arabic by Alfred of Sareshill, who put them at the end of the Liber metheororum, the first Latin version of Aristotle’s Meteorology. De mineralibus is transmitted by more than a hundred manuscripts. The edition is based on the complete collation of (...) ten witnesses of the text, selected according the stemma codicum proposed in vol. X.1 of Aristoteles Latinus, in which part IV of the Liber metheororum has been published. In addition to the editorial criteria, the author presents and discusses some peculiarities of Alfred’s Arabic-Latin translation. The edition is accompanied by Latin-Arabic and Arabic-Latin glossaries. (shrink)
