Agalev en Ecolo als links-libertaire partijen : Of de partijpolitieke vertaling van een nieuwe breuklijn.Staf Hellemans & Herbert Kitschelt - 1990 - Res Publica 32 (1):81-94.
A survey conducted in 1985 at the party conferences of the Belgian ecology parties Agalev and Ecolo, allows to brush an empirically based picture of the militants and the internal functioning of these parties. The "new middle class" background of the militants, the stratarchic order in the cadre party, the manifest links with the socalled "new social movements" and the specific brand of a new left-libertarian ideology all point to the new and different character of these parties, in comparison tothe (...)

From 'Catholicism Against Modernity' to the Problematic 'Modernity of Catholicism'.Staf Hellemans - 2001 - Ethical Perspectives 8 (2):117-127.
Since the French Revolution the relationship between the Catholic church and modernity has always been very troublesome. First I will describe how the church saw its own position with regard to modernity and how its stance evolved. In a second stage, I will then focus on how modernity `framed' Catholicism: this I will refer to as the modernity and modernization of Catholicism. The insights obtained will be used in a third part in order to get a better understanding of the (...)

Nieuwe sociale bewegingen in de Belgische politiek : Een impressie.Staf Hellemans - 1993 - Res Publica 35 (2):197-211.
In overviewing the empirical evidence gathered on and the literature written about New Social Movements in Belgium this article tries to buttress three general propositions. First, the NSM' highlight a general tendency among social movements today of a thoroughgoing dissociation of the mobilizational potential on the one hand and organizational power on the other hand. Second, the NSM's in Belgium have helped substantially in raising participation levels, broadening the action repertoire of the citizens and changing the nature ofparticipation. Third, although (...)

Varieties of the Self: Peter Abelard and the Mental Architecture of the Paraclete.Babette S. Hellemans - 2023 - Boston: BRILL.
_Varieties of the Self_ discusses human perspectives of the Paraclete (founded in 1129) on sacrifice, intentionality, and views on body and soul. The anthropological approach connects different works written by Peter Abelard to views on the individual within this community.

    Bourdieu, Critic of Foucault.Staf Callewaert - 2006 - Theory, Culture and Society 23 (6):73-98.
An attempt is made to confront Foucault and Bourdieu. First of all by answering the question: Why did Foucault never discuss Bourdieu, while Bourdieu increasingly discusses Foucault, more and more in the sense of a sharp rejection of some of Foucaults main positions? In a second move, the similarities and differences between their positions in the field and their intellectual life histories are outlined. In a third part, Bourdieu's critique of Foucault is presented extensively, up to some pages of Ein (...)

    Reading Plato for the 21st Century.Wendy Elgersma Helleman - 1999 - Philosophia Reformata 64 (2):148-164.
Plato has received his share of bad press in this century. A number of significant schools of thought, like existentialism and phenomenology, have openly expressed impatience with Platonic ‘essentialism.’ He has even been blamed for fascism. Perhaps the problem goes back to Nietzsche’s call, at the turn of the century, to be true to the earth, our common mother. His message was aimed at otherworldly, pious Christians who, with a spiritualism worthy of the Platonists, regarded contemplative thought as the way (...)

    Het beleid van de provincies.Staf Lauwerysen - 1978 - Res Publica 20 (2):279-298.
The abolition of the political institutions of the Belgian provinces, as provided in the government declaration of 7 June 1977, puts a question into the usefulness of the provincial institutions. This contribution intends to throw more light on the policy at the provincial level - now and in the near past - by means of a brief functional and financial analysis. Beforehand, it has to be mentioned that juridical and institutional limitations do exercise a restraining influence on the functioning of the (...)

Plotinus and Magic.Wendy Elgersma Helleman - 2010 - International Journal of the Platonic Tradition 4 (2):114-146.
Contemporary scholarship accents incipient theurgical practice for Plotinus; this lends a certain urgency to the question of his acceptance of magic. While use of magic recorded in Porphyry's Vita Plotini has received considerable attention, far less has been done to analyze actual discussion in the Enneads. Examination of key passages brings to light the context for discussion of magic, particularly issues of sympathy, prayer, astrology and divination. Equally important is Plotinus' understanding of the cosmos and role of the heavenly bodies. (...)

Prayer, Magic and Memory in Plotinus’ Treatise on the Soul (Enneads iv 4 [28], 30-45).Wendy Elgersma Helleman - 2022 - International Journal of the Platonic Tradition 17 (2):208-231.
In an environment where astrology was widely respected, Plotinus accepted the role of heavenly bodies in answering prayer. Considering them divine, he denied them the use of memory (iv 4, 6-8); how then could he explain response to prayer received after an interval of time? Plotinus was also concerned to deny attributing intentionality in any response given, for good or evil, since that would make the astral deities responsible also for morally dubious answers. In his treatment of the issue in (...)

Discussion: On the future of our past.Mariette Hellemans - 2007 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 26 (5):499-504.
After integrating the main lines of argumentation developed in the special issue, this paper makes a balance of the question on the public role of the university. Furthermore, the paper focuses on the discussion underlying the articles collected in the issue. A distinction is made between “comprehending” the past and present of the university on the one hand and “justifying” the university and its public role on the other hand. In view of this distinction, it is argued that the question (...)

The act of drawing a line or uttering a word is often seen as integral to the process of making art. This is especially obvious in music and the visual arts, but applies to literature, performance, and other arts as well. These collected essays, written by scholars from diverse fields, take a historical view of the richness of creation out of nothing (creatio ex nihilo) in order to draw out debates, sometimes implicit and sometimes formally stated, about the production and (...)

Justin martyr and The Logos: An apologetical strategy.Wendy Elgersma Helleman - 2002 - Philosophia Reformata 67 (2):128-147.
This article focuses on Justin Martyr’s apologetical intent in his use of the term ‘logos’, recognizing ambiguity and word-play. The lengthy, complex discussions of Justin’s use of ‘logos’ , have neglected the apologetical aspect. The author highlights the epistemological character of Justin’s central part/whole argument. Accordingly, both the position which understands Justin affirming a general revelation that gives more than partial access to truth outside of Christ , as well as one which affirms an unbridgeable chasm in knowledge of truth (...)

    Predication according to Substance and Relation.Wendy Elgersma Helleman - 2019 - Augustinianum 59 (2):453-474.
Well-known Augustinian scholars have complained about unresolved issues and the nature of argumentation of De Trinitate 6. In this book Augustine examines the role of 1 Cor. 1:24, Christum […] dei sapientiam in anti-Arian polemic, and critiques what may be considered quasi-relational predication of divine wisdom. The present essay surveys recent scholarship on book 6, with special attention to the commentary of M. Carreker, affirming the role of logic in this book. It examines Augustine’s understanding of the genitive in the (...)

Staffing crisis capacity: a different approach to healthcare resource allocation for a different type of scarce resource.Catherine R. Butler, Laura B. Webster & Douglas S. Diekema - forthcoming - Journal of Medical Ethics.
Severe staffing shortages have emerged as a prominent threat to maintaining usual standards of care during the COVID-2019 pandemic. In dire settings of crisis capacity, healthcare systems assume the ethical duty to maximise aggregate population-level benefit of existing resources. To this end, existing plans for rationing mechanical ventilators and intensive care unit beds in crisis capacity focus on selecting individual patients who are most likely to survive and prioritising these patients to receive scarce resources. However, staffing capacity is conceptually different (...)

Multinational corporations' international staffing policies have been evaluated in terms of cost and efficiency arguments. Research has not addressed, however, the ethical impact of these policies on diverse stakeholder groups. This paper presents a conceptual framework by which ethnocentric, polycentric and geocentric staffing policies are theoretically linked to underlying decision-making modes of instrumentality, bounded rationality and economic rationality, respectively. It goes on to describe the ethical rationales associated with each policy type, namely, distributive justice, moral rights of man, and utilitarianism. (...)

This manuscript explores the argument for lower student-to-school counselor ratios in U.S. public education. Drawing upon a comprehensive historical review and existing research, we establish the integral role of school counselors and the notable benefits of reduced student-to-counselor ratios. Our analysis of national data exposes marked disparities across states and districts, with the most underfunded often serving higher percentages of low-income students and students of color. This situation raises significant ethical concerns, prompting a call for conscientious policy reform and targeted (...)
