Selective associations and associative learning: Multiple mechanisms, multiple measures.Bruce Cuthbert - 1997 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 20 (2):361-362.
Davey presents expectancy bias as an alternative explanation for preparedness effects in conditioning; this commentary mentions some of the problems in interpreting UCS expectancy designs vis-à-vis conditioning. A further complication is that other CS characteristics also influence conditioning: A recent experiment provided support for Rescorla and Wagner's (1972) hypothesis that the amount of conditioning is smaller when the CS and UCS elicit similarly valenced initial affective responses (as with a fear-relevant CS and shock UCS). Finally, different physiological systems measure different (...)

“When We Talk about Gender We Talk about Sex”: (A)sexuality and (A)gendered Subjectivities.Karen Cuthbert - 2019 - Gender and Society 33 (6):841-864.
Gender diversity is seemingly prevalent among asexual people. Drawing on qualitative research, and focusing on agender identities in particular, this article explores why this might be the case. I argue that previous explanations that center biologistic understandings of sexual development, the liberatory potential of asexuality, or psycho-cognitive conflict, are insufficient. Instead, I offer a sociological perspective in which participants’ agender subjectivities can be understood as arising from an embodied meaning-making process where gender was understood to be fundamentally about sexuality. I (...)

The Representation of Cross-Border Surrogacy in Australian Surrogacy Events.Yingyi Luo, Denise Cuthbert & Shelley Marshall - 2023 - International Journal of Feminist Approaches to Bioethics 16 (2):95-114.
As a method of family formation, cross-border surrogacy is controversial and beset by risks of exploitation. This article extends the literature on surrogacy by examining the way Australian surrogacy promotion and information events represent cross-border surrogacy. It examines the emerging phenomenon of surrogacy events held by a not-for-profit surrogacy organization to promote cross-border surrogacy in Australia—a country that prohibits commercial surrogacy. The article draws on observations from a series of surrogacy events in Australia and online during the 2019–21 time period. (...)

  17. Dubito Ergo Sum: Exploring AI Ethics.Viktor Dörfler & Giles Cuthbert - 2024 - Hicss 57: Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, Honolulu, Hi.
We paraphrase Descartes’ famous dictum in the area of AI ethics where the “I doubt and therefore I am” is suggested as a necessary aspect of morality. Therefore AI, which cannot doubt itself, cannot possess moral agency. Of course, this is not the end of the story. We explore various aspects of the human mind that substantially differ from AI, which includes the sensory grounding of our knowing, the act of understanding, and the significance of being able to doubt ourselves. Metacognition in argument generation: the misperceived relationship between emotional investment and argument quality.Dan R. Johnson, Mara E. Tynan, Andy S. Cuthbert & Juliette K. O’Quinn - 2017 - Cognition and Emotion 32 (3):566-578.
Overestimation of one’s ability to argue their position on socio-political issues may partially underlie the current climate of political extremism in the U.S. Yet very little is known about what factors influence overestimation in argumentation of socio-political issues. Across three experiments, emotional investment substantially increased participants’ overestimation. Potential confounding factors like topic complexity and familiarity were ruled out as alternative explanations. Belief-based cues were established as a mechanism underlying the relationship between emotional investment and overestimation in a measurement-of-mediation and manipulation-of-mediator (...)

Signa de caelo in the lives of st Cuthbert: The impact of biblical images and exegesis on early medieval hagiography.Sandra Duncan - 2000 - Heythrop Journal 41 (4):399–412.
This article uses the two prose Lives of Cuthbert written by an anonymous monk of Lindisfarne and by Bede in the first half of the eighth century to illustrate how an understanding of the impact of biblical language and its accompanying exegetical tradition may help in the interpretation of hagiographical works. After an examination of recent scholarly work on the relationship scripture and hagiography and the impact of signa upon the early medieval thought‐world, the paper examines the incidents that (...)

    Notes on three northern English quietists.Colin Richmond - 2011 - Common Knowledge 17 (2):411-422.
The author here extends a dialogue with Jeffrey M. Perl, published in the Spring 2010 issue of Common Knowledge, under the title “`Decorate the Dungeon.'” That dialogue concerns whether Thomas More could have avoided martyrdom though he acted with heroic quietism during the Henrician Reformation. Dubious of this premise during the previous exchange, the author here examines the lives of three northern English quietists of More's time—Christopher Urswick (c. 1448–1552), Cuthbert Tunstall (1474–1559), and John Redman (1499–1551)—who never quite risked (...)

The merits of an experimentally testable model of phobias.Graham C. L. Davey - 1997 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 20 (2):363-364.
A series of arguments are presented by De Jong & Merckelbach which suggest that biological preparedness has been received significantly less critically than it should have been. I agree fully with their assessment. Cuthbert raises four questions about the applicability of the expectancy bias hypothesis to selective associations in human conditioning. This response argues that none of these four examples is necessarily problematic for the hypothesis.

Budé's Breviarium: Authorship, Date and Purpose.Andrew Burnett - 2017 - Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes 80 (1):101-126.
The early publication history of the very short Breviarium of Guillaume Budé's De asse et partibus eius is analysed and clarified, and the earliest versions are dated to c. 1520. Though short, it was an influential little work, and in particular its links with Cuthbert Tunstall's De arte supputandi are explored. It is argued that Bude himself was the author of the Brevianum, and that it may have a relevance to the Budé/Porzio controversy about the 'sestertius' and 'sestertium'.
