Babolin, one of the foremost Italian interpreters of modern German philosophy with a special interest in the direct analysis of the rapport Man/god, self/other than self, has written a close and persuasive account of the German theologian Guardini as a thinker concerned with ‘Otherness’. The methodology, as in his 1965 volume Essere e Alterità in Martin Buber is copious but precise, with a gratifying clear distinction between what the author has added to the chiefly Italo-German tradition of criticism and (...) his own review of that tradition, which is contained in the first section of the book. The second chapter contains an exhaustive review of the theory of ‘polar opposition’ axiomatised in Guardini’s Der Gegensatz which was published in 1925, just two years after Buber’s Ich und Du. En varios momentos de su desarrollo intelectual, Romano Guardini se interesó en el pensamiento de Agustín, impulsado tanto por inquietudes personales como por las provocaciones que le ofrecían los pensadores de su época. Por último, el texto se cierra con algunas observaciones críticas sobre la reflexión de Guardini, en particular respecto a su antropología y considerando las investigaciones de teólogos y filósofos, Massimo Borghesi sobre todo, que ya han tratado el mismo tema. Romano Guardini was one of the most important intellectuals of German Catholicism in the twentieth century. He influenced nearly an entire generation of German Catholic theologians and was the leading figure of the German Catholic youth movement as it grew exponentially in the 1920s. Yet there are many open questions about his early intellectual development and his academic contribution to religious, cultural, social and political questions in the Weimar Republic and in National Socialist Germany. This article draws upon (...) Guardini’s publications, the secondary literature on Guardini and on some archival material, seeking to outline his early development and his engagement with the ideological context following World War I and in National Socialist Germany. Here Guardini’s criticisms of the modern age are presented. Besides this many other issues are addressed, such as his criticism of the women’s movement, his understanding of the youth movement, reception of Carl Schmitt, views of race, interpretation of the controversial Volk-concept, contribution to a Jewish journal in 1933, and his basic positions on the issues of obedience, order and authority. While Guardini was viewed critically by some National Socialists in the Third Reich, the administrative correspondences on him in the 1940s actually show that there was an internal debate about him among the National Socialist officials. This involved different figures, including a diplomat who came to Guardini’s defense. The internal disagreements were made more complicated because Guardini’s brothers were apparently members of the Fascist Party in Italy at this time. (shrink)

Romano Guardini does not want to replicate the medieval world, but he finds in the union of « faith and world » which he considers typical of the Middle Ages a useful means to avoid any dictatorship in Europe. The Middle Ages becomes therefore a political model for contemporary society. To refer to this theory, the Author usea the expression «Newest Middle Ages».

La presente investigación subraya la importancia de la intuición en el estilo cognoscitivo e interpretativo guardiniano. Se intenta por este camino ponernos en contacto con la experiencia guardiniana y con la propia experiencia que nace de la gracia del encuentro. En el centro del encuentro se ubica la intuición, siendo ella la que nos permite tocar el objeto concreto que se desea conocer e interpretar. A su vez, a través de la misma intuición, la persona se deja tocar por el (...) valor del objeto en sí mismo.El camino que Guardini nos propone, enriquece la intuición desde un grupo de contrastes que ofrecen una mirada nueva, y desde los cuales la misma intuición puede ser confrontada y purificada. De todo ello surge una nueva intuición (Anschauung) que debe recorrer, posteriormente, el camino de la conceptualización para hacerse visible desde la perspectiva del conocimiento abstracto conceptual. El camino de la intuición se abre así a un orden amplio de conocimiento que no se limita solo a la experiencia individual ni a lo que le es familiar o seguro. Por este camino, desde una intuición en diálogo y en una tensión vital con diferentes miradas, Guardini lleva a cabo su tarea interpretativa de importantes autores, de su propio tiempo y de la propia cultura. La finalidad principal de la tarea interpretativa guardiniana apunta a la figura de Jesús. Conocer a Jesús e interpretar correctamente la Sagrada Escritura plantea a su vez un nuevo desafío, al no contar con una medida humana que sea capaz de captar plenamente toda la dimensión de esa figura. Para el encuentro con Jesús, y para una adecuada interpretación de la Escritura, surge la importancia fundamental del principio de la fe en cuanto respuesta humana a la Revelación. (shrink)
