Yves Grandjean, Tony Kozelj and François Salviat The Zeus Gate on Thasos p. 175-268 The Gate of Zeus and Hera, offered by Pythippos son of Paiestratos, is one of the most remarkable features of the Thasian enceinte: to the sculptured reliefs that adorned it was added a particular architectural embellishment which has never been analysed in its entirety. The numerous blocks preserved in situ make it possible to reconstruct the elevation of the gate, which was in fact a (...) gate tower, and to detail the appearance of the latter with its architectural facing of superimposed orders — Doric and Ionic — on the town side and its Doric frieze integrated into the walls of the tower on the side facing the country. The influences of Macedonian, funerary and palatial architecture are manifest. According to the lists of theoroi and the amphora stamps discovered in the levels preceding its construction, the gate tower was erected in around 300 BC. It replaced an original opening going back to the time when the enceinte visible today was built, in other words after the raid on Thasos by Histiaios of Miletus in 494; the old excavations like the recent investigations confirm the account by Herodotus (VI 46), which there is no reason to doubt. Inscriptions from Thasos. This article presents twelve inscriptions, most of them found during the excavations of the French School at Athens from 1970 to 1973. Among them, we note particularly two short lists of theoroi inscribed on stones which do not belong to the “ passage of theoroi” but allow correcting or improving ancient readings of some lists found in this place ; dedications of magistrates or private persons, one of which was consecrated by all the magistrates in office the (...) same year— unfortunately, without any information concerning the offices ; the horos stone of a new patre to be added to those found by Cl. Rolley during his excavations of the Thesmophorion ; three epitaphs inscribed on a sarcophagus, one of them metrical. These inscriptions date from the first half of the fourth century BC to the second half of the second or the beginning of the third century AD. (shrink)

Publication du matériel amphorique recueilli lors de la fouille du quartier de la porte du Silène. Les amphores ou fragments d'amphores s'échelonnent du vie s. au me s. av. J.-C. Les vases importés proviennent surtout de la Grèce de l'Est (Chios, Samos, Milet, Lesbos, Rhodes et peut-être Glazomènes et Cos), mais il y a aussi des exemplaires issus d'ateliers de Mendé, de Corcyre et de Corinthe. Grâce à la découverte d'un lot de dix amphores rangées dans le cellier d'une maison, (...) on apporte la preuve que ce genre de récipient pouvait jouir d'une grande longévité. Il a été possible enfin d'enrichir la typologie des amphores thasiennes par la mise en évidence d'une forme nouvelle, créée vraisemblablement à l'époque archaïque, et en tout cas avant le milieu du ve s. Hippocrates and the sanctuary of the Delian at Thasos. Owing to various readings of several manuscripts, the address of one of Hippocrates’ patients mentioned in Epidemics III was until now considered uncertain. The recent discovery of the Delion guarantees henceforth that this patient lived near this sanctuary, in the most northern part of the town.

The inscription that is the subject of this article was discovered in October 2005 and enables us to identify a new sanctuary on Thasos that came to light in 2003 not far from the Thesmophorion, but which has hitherto remained anonymous. It is a Delion, dedicated to 'Delian' Apollo and Artemis. The text, which is dated fairly early in the first half of the 4th century BC, consists of two successive decrees: the first forbids women from entering the sanctuary during (...) the Thesmophoria, and the second forbids the grazing of cattle in it. The punishment for those who contravene is of a moral and religious order, the ενθυμιστόν, which, in this form, is attested epigraphically only on Thasos on two occasions. The study of the text affords an opportunity to draw up a list of the Delia known in the ancient Greek world and to touch upon the subject of the relations between Thasos, its mother city Paros, and the Delian sanctuary. The role played by the Delion on Thasos in the defensive system of the city in the Archaic period is also emphasised. (shrink)

Στήν ἀνασκαφή τῆς συνοικίας τῆς Πόρτας τοῦ Σειληνοῦ στή Θάσο, βρέθηκαν ἔνδεκα πήλινα ἀντικείμενα, ἀποσπασματικά καί μή, πού ἐμφανίζουν σχῆμα κωνικό, κυρτωμένο πρός τά ἐπάνω. Τό ἄνω τμῆμα, στό ὁποῖο εἶναι προσκολλημένη λαβή, τελειώνει μέ προεξέχοντα.

Réexamen de l'inscription IG XII 8, 262 grâce à la découverte d'un nouveau fragment. Le texte, d'origine attique, a été rédigé au moment de la restauration démocratique intervenue à Thasos à la suite de la reconquête de l'île par Thrasybule en 407. Analyse du formulaire utilisé (intitulé, affichage, serments, double datation) et commentaire des mesures prises par Athènes à l'occasion de cette restauration (en particulier sanctions contre les oligarques, retour des exilés, appel aux contributions volontaires, nomination d'un archonte). Attribution à (...) la même année 407 des conventions de réconciliation entre Thasos et sa colonie Néapolis. Réflexions sur la politique menée par Athènes dans le règlement des affaires thasiennes. Le XVIIIe siècle est l'âge d'or du matérialisme français. Qu'il prolonge la doctrine de la nécessité des événements de Hobbes, qu'il retourne la théorie des animaux machines contre Descartes pour penser l'homme machine, qu'il renouvelle l'idée d'une science de l'homme à partir d'une critique de l'intériorité subjective ou invente de nouveaux modèles, on retrouve souvent dans les œuvres les plus importantes la tentative de fournir une explication homogène de la nature, de la société et de l'esprit. Mais cet âge d'or (...) du matérialisme français, tout central qu'il fut dans la pensée des Lumières, n'y fut pourtant pas dominant. C'est pourquoi, outre son aspect proprement théorique, son style est polémique et critique: contre les fictions de la métaphysique, contre l'hypocrisie morale, contre la superstition religieuse. Affrontant directement les pouvoirs ecclésiastique, politique, universitaire, certains textes matérialistes ont vécu, comme on le sait, une vie clandestine et connu une histoire souterraine. Il est question ici de trois matérialistes français majeurs: La Mettrie, Helvétius et d'Holbach. Si ces trois auteurs sont privilégiés, c'est pour remettre au premier plan des œuvres qui ont été parfois éclipsées par l'ombre immense portée par une autre figure importante: Diderot. Mais Diderot n'est bien entendu pas absent du volume. Il se pourrait même que ce soit dans une confrontation avec lui que se dessinent les voies du matérialisme. (shrink)
