Neural network models of memory are notorious for catastrophic interference: Old items are forgotten as new items are memorized (French, 1999; McCloskey & Cohen, 1989). While working memory (WM) in human adults shows severe capacity limitations, these capacity limitations do not reflect neural network style catastrophic interference. However, our ability to quickly apprehend the numerosity of small sets of objects (i.e., subitizing) does show catastrophic capacity limitations, and this subitizing capacity and WM might reflect a common capacity. Accordingly, computational investigations (...) (Knops, Piazza, Sengupta, Eger & Melcher, 2014; Sengupta, Surampudi & Melcher, 2014) suggest that mutual inhibition among neurons can explain both kinds of capacity limitations as well as why our ability to estimate the numerosity of larger sets is limited according to a Weber ratio signature. Based on simulations with a saliency map‐like network and mathematical proofs, we provide three results. First, mutual inhibition among neurons leads to catastrophic interference when items are presented simultaneously. The network can remember a limited number of items, but when more items are presented, the network forgets all of them. Second, if memory items are presented sequentially rather than simultaneously, the network remembers the most recent items rather than forgetting all of them. Hence, the tendency in WM tasks to sequentially attend even to simultaneously presented items might not only reflect attentional limitations, but also an adaptive strategy to avoid catastrophic interference. Third, the mean activation level in the network can be used to estimate the number of items in small sets, but it does not accurately reflect the number of items in larger sets. Rather, we suggest that the Weber ratio signature of large number discrimination emerges naturally from the interaction between the limited precision of a numeric estimation system and a multiplicative gain control mechanism. Is formal simplicity a guide to learning in humans, as simplicity is said to be a guide to the acceptability of theories in science? Does simplicity determine the difficulty of various learning tasks? I argue that, similarly to how scientists sometimes preferred complex theories when this facilitated calculations, results from perception, learning and reasoning suggest that formal complexity is generally unrelated to what is easy to learn and process by humans, and depends on assumptions about available representational and processing primitives. (...) “Simpler” hypotheses are preferred only when they are also easier to process. Historically, “simpler”, easier‐to‐process, scientific theories might also be preferred if they are transmitted preferentially. Empirically viable complexity measures should build on the representational and processing primitives of actual learners, even if explanations of their behaviour become formally more complex. Two factions opposed each other: Biological mechanists claimed that the properties characteristic of living organisms could be ex- plained mechanistically, in the way the behavior of a clock can be explained by the properties and the arrangement of its cogs, springs, and weights. Substantial vitalists, on the other hand, maintained that (...) the explanation envisaged by the mechanists was impossible and that one had to postulate a special nonphysical substance in order to explain life. Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts war die Frage, ob Leben rein mechanisch erklärt werden könne, noch genau so heiß umstritten wie das Leib-Seele- Problem heute. Zwei Parteien standen sich unversöhnlich gegenüber. Auf der einen Seite die Biologischen Mechanisten mit der Auffassung, daß die für Lebewesen charakteristischen Eigenschaften (Stoffwechsel, Fortpflan- zung, Wahrnehmung, zielgerichtetes Verhalten, Morphogenese) genauso mechanisch erklärt werden können wie das Verhalten einer Uhr, das sich mit physikalischer Zwangsläufigkeit aus den Eigenschaften und der Anord- nung ihrer Zahnräder, Federn und Gewichte (...) ergibt. Auf der anderen Seite die Substanz-Vitalisten, die die entgegengesetzte Meinung vertraten, Leben könne nur durch die Annahme einer nichtphysischen Substanz erklärt wer- den – einer Entelechie oder eines élan vital. Als Broad in den frühen zwan- ziger Jahren seine Überlegungen zum Begriff der Emergenz entwickelte, verfolgte er unter anderem das Ziel, Raum für eine dritte Position zwischen diesen beiden Extremen zu schaffen – eine Position, die er Emergenten Vi- talismus nannte. Können Gründe Ursachen unseres Handelns sein? Wenn man Gründe als Paare von Überzeugungen und Wünschen auffasst, spricht viel dafür, dass das so ist. Aber wie ist es, wenn man Gründe als Tatsachen in der Welt auffasst, die dafür sprechen, eine bestimmte Handlung auszuführen? Manche sagen, dass es zumindest für freie Handlungen keine hinreichenden Ursachen geben kann. Egal wie die Welt beschaffen ist, egal zu welchen Ergebnissen die Überlegungen einer Handelnden geführt haben, sie kann sich immer so und auch anders entscheiden. (...) Hinter dieser Auffassung steht eine Auffassung Handelns, der zufolge dieses Handeln darin besteht, dass die Handelnde akteurskausal bestimmte Bewegungen verursacht. Diese Auffassung ist unhaltbar. Handlungen beruhen auf Entscheidungen, die oft auf Prozesse des Überlegens zurückgehen, die ihrerseits auch durch Tatsachen in der Welt angestoßen werden, die für die Ausführung einer Handlung sprechen. Zumindest de facto kommt es oft vor, dass diese Prozesse mit kausaler Notwendigkeit zu einer bestimmten Entscheidung und damit auch zu einer bestimmten Handlung führen. D. h., zumindest in manchen Fällen sind auch Tatsachen, die für die Ausführung einer Handlung sprechen, – nicht allein, aber zusammen mit anderen Umständen – Ursachen von Handlungen. (shrink)

In der Philosophie ist man sich heute weitgehend einig, daß das, was man gemeinhin unter dem Stichwort ‘Bewußtsein’ zusammenfaßt, eine Reihe sehr unterschiedlicher Aspekte beinhaltet. Bewußtsein hat zunächst einmal etwas mit Selbstwissen zu tun, d.h. mit der Fähigkeit mancher Wesen, nicht nur ihre Um- welt, sondern auch sich selbst, ihre eigenen Zustände und Handlungen zu reprä- sentieren. Die hier einschlägigen Stichworte heißen deshalb ‘Metarepräsenta- tion’2 und ‘Selbstmodell’. Dabei ist das zweite Stichwort letztlich treffender, da die Repräsentationen der Umwelt und der (...) eigenen Zustände und Handlungen nicht unverbunden nebeneinander stehen, sondern so miteinander verknüpft sein sollten, daß eine Repräsentation des Wesens selbst in seiner Umwelt ent- steht. Nur auf diese Weise kann der Zweck dieser Art von Repräsentationen erreicht werden: die Überwachung und Steuerung der eigenen Handlungen (‘self-monitoring’). (shrink)

Depuis maintenant plusieurs années, le lecteur francophone encourt une dette de gratitude envers Gérard Sondag pour des traductions et des présentations originales de textes de Duns Scot. Le présent ouvrage nous fournit une introduction précieuse à la nature de la théologie selon Scot. Le texte traduit est le Prologue de la Lectura en quatre questions qui traitent de la nécessité pour l’homme d’une doctrine révélée sur Dieu, du sujet de la théologie, du statut scientifique de la théologie, et du caractère (...) «pratique» de la théologie. La traduction est accompagnée d’une quantité généreuse de notes et elle est précédée d’un «Commentaire continu» par Gérard Sondag où transparaît un contrôle impressionnant de toute l’œuvre du Subtil. Une note d’édition introduit le lecteur dans les problèmes de traduction que rencontre le vulgarisateur de Scot aujourd’hui et qui sont dus au caractère hyperformel de sa pensée. When Augustin Perier compiled the first list of his writings in 1920, most of his philosophical works were believed to be lost. Most recent publications have enabled us to appraise his merits as a translator an commentator of Aristotle. But only (...) a few of his philosophical monographs were available until an important collection of his treatises was discovered inthe libraries of Tehran. This. at last, has enabled us to study in detail his contribution to logic, his treatment of physical and metaphysical problems, and his position on questions of Muslim "kalam". The Monophysite theology of Yahya ibn ''Adi, on the other hand, though better known through the studies of G Graf and A. Perier, still awaits renewed examination. The most important works in this field have not even been published. So the new inventory of his writings is intended to provide the basis for a reassessment of his merits as an Aristotelean as well as a Christian thinker.The study contains a survey of biographical data, detailed bibliographical information on manuscripts and printed works and summaries of most the unpublished texts. Averroes defended philosophy by returning to the true Aristotle. For this purpose, Aristotle's book in which he explained the eternity, uniqueness and movement of the universe, occupied a place of special importance. But the Aristotelian philosopher had a hard time holding his own in the face of contradictions within the book and with respect to Aristotle's later works. In his early Compendium, later Paraphrase, and final Long Commentary of De Caelo, Ibn Rushd continued the efforts of the Hellenistic commentators in (...) order to integrate all the elements of his doctrine into a unified system, to harmonize his early cosmology with his later Metaphysics and to uphold his models of homocentric planetary spheres against the mathematical paradigm of Ptolemaic astronomy. Der franzosische Sozialwissenschaftler und Kulturtheoretiker Pierre Bourdieu hat uber die Grenzen seines Faches hinaus breite Aufmerksamkeit gefunden. Der Band rezipiert sein Denken fur eine zeitgenossische Theologie. In times of an omnipresent interest in Hans Blumenberg’s work, this essay investigates motives of a type of philosophy which, in tracing metaphor, myth, rhetoric, and technology, apparently follows one goal: to keep reality at a distance. With a particular eye on a peculiarly forced reading of Kafka, which can be found in Blumenberg’s posthumous convolute about ›Die nackte Wahrheit‹, some contradictions however become apparent which may not only be of theoretical nature but may also be related to the institutional (...) conditions of philosophy in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany, namely that philosophy can ›afford‹ to discuss the matters of truth and reality, as if they were problems by which we are only affected distantly. In the light of war and hunger, which today have become part of our historical present, this essay works towards a very brief critique of Blumenberg as well as of the current interest in his works. Nachdem in Israels frühester Zeit JHWH zunächst als der eine Rettergott Israels verehrt worden war , Salomo aber dann die Verehrung der Götter anderer Völker in den israelitischen Staatskult eingeführt hatte, leitete das Efraimitische Geschichtswerk noch kurze Zeit vor Hosea die Rückbesinnung auf JHWH als den einen Rettergott Israels und damit den Kampf für die ausschließliche Verehrung JHWHs ein. Um 700 vC wurde diese JHWH-Monolatrie vom Ur-Deuteronomium und dem Hiskijanischen Geschichtswerk um die Forderung nach der – von Hiskija eingeführten – (...) Ausübung des Kultes ausschließlich an dem einen Ort ergänzt. Während in diesem hiskijanischen Anfangsstadium der Kultzentralisation der Kult außerhalb des Jerusalemer Tempels noch als jahwistisch galt, wurde er weitere 80 Jahre später im Zusammenhang mit der erneuten Kultzentralisationsmaßnahme Joschijas als idolatrisch gewertet.After the worship of YHWH as the one savior god of the Israelites in the earliest period of Israelite history, Salomo introduced the worship of gods of other peoples into the state cult of Israel. Shortly before the time of Hosea, the “Efraimite History” initiated the return to and reevaluation of YHWH as the only savior god of Israel and thereby the struggle for the exclusive worship of YHWH. Around 700 BCE, the demand for the YHWH-monolatry was expanded by the so-called Ur-Deuteronomy and the “Hezekianic History” to include the practicing of the cult only at the “one place” , a practise established by Hezekiah. In this early stage of cult centralization, the cult practised outside of the temple of Jerusalem was yet taken to be yahwistic, but 80 years later, in the context of the renewed cult centralization by Joschija, it was rejected as idolatric. Über eine Explikation der Begriffe "Religionswissenschaft" und "Theologie" wurde versucht, das Wesen und die Aufgabe beider Disziplinen sowie deren Verhältnis zueinander zu klären. Angesetzt wurde beim jeweiligen Gegenstand, "Religion/-en" bei der Religionswissenschaft und "Gott/Götter/Göttin/-nen" bei der Theologie. Religion/-en sind nicht Gegenstand der Theologie, sondern deren Standort. Objekt der Religionswissenschaft kann z.B. auch die Theologie einer Religion sein. Die sogenannte "Wirklichkeit der Religion", also die Wirklichkeit dessen, was religiös als wirklich empfunden wird, ist Gegenstand der Religionsphilosophie bzw. der Theologie, die Empfindung (...) dieser Wirklichkeit dagegen ist - unabhängig von der Wirklichkeit oder Nicht-Wirklichkeit des Empfindungsinhalts - ein Objekt der Religionswissenschaft. Religionswissenschaft hat einen empirisch faßbaren Gegenstand und ist daher eine empirische Wissenschaft; die Theologie hat einen empirisch nicht-faßbaren Gegenstand und ist daher eine nicht-empirische, deduktive Wissenschaft. Die historischen Fächer im christlich-theologischen Lehrplan, Bibelwissenschaft, Kirchen- und Theologiegeschichte, sind religionswissenschaftliche Disziplinen, deren Ergebnisse die Theologie, also Dogmatik und Moraltheologie, verarbeitet - wie die sogenannte Religionstheologie die Ergebnisse der Religionswissenschaft, die sich mit fremden Religionen beschäftigt, aufnimmt. Die "Fundamentaltheologie" ist Grundlagenwissenschaft der Theologie. Die praktischen Fächer nehmen die Ergebnisse der Theologie auf und wenden sie auf die kirchliche Praxis an. Die Religionsphilosophie hat es als Philosophie mit einem empirisch nicht faßbaren Gegenstand zu tun und ist daher keine religionswissenschaftliche Disziplin, sondern Grundlagenwissenschaft der Religionswissenschaft. Zusammenfassung Die Rekrutierung von guten Trainern ist eine der zentralen Herausforderungen für Vereine, Verbände und Olympiastützpunkte. Über die strukturellen Bedingungen der Trainerrekrutierung im Spitzensport liegen bislang jedoch nur wenige Erkenntnisse vor. Ziel des vorliegenden Artikels ist es, den Prozess der Trainerrekrutierung im deutschen Spitzensport und die zugrunde liegenden organisationsstrukturellen Bedingungen zu analysieren. Die Analyse zeigt, dass für die Trainerrekrutierung im Spitzensport insbesondere Netzwerke funktional sind. Deren Nachteil liegt darin, dass sie formale Vorgaben aushebeln können und persönlichen Präferenzen ein zum Teil (...) unangemessenes Gewicht verschaffen. Formalisierte Rekrutierungsmittel haben vor diesem Hintergrund vor allem die symbolische Funktion, eine Gerechtigkeitsillusion im Hinblick auf bereits getroffene Entscheidungen zu erzeugen. (shrink)

ZusammenfassungDie Schaffung optimaler Rahmenbedingungen für eine möglichst individualisierte Athletenentwicklung stellt Leistungssportorganisationen vor vielschichtige Herausforderungen. Im vorliegenden Beitrag begründen wir das Design eines Organisationsentwicklungsprogramms zur Förderung der individualisierten Athletenentwicklung, welches derzeit im Netzwerk aus dem Olympiastützpunkt und Bundesstützpunkten der Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar implementiert, evaluiert und optimiert wird. Im Rahmen theoretischer Überlegungen wird zunächst gezeigt, dass Athletenentwicklung ein komplexer biopsychosozialer Prozess ist, der neben der Förderung sportmotorischer Höchstleistung auch die nachhaltige Gesunderhaltung und konstruktive Bewältigung alltäglicher Lebensaufgaben beinhaltet. Vor diesem Hintergrund konzipieren wir individualisierte (...) Athletenentwicklung als Managementaufgabe in Stützpunktnetzwerken des Leistungssports, die einen angemessenen Umgang mit Heterogenität, Interdisziplinarität und Flexibilität erfordert. Zudem wird die praktische Relevanz von partizipativen Ansätzen aus dem Bereich der Organisationsentwicklung verdeutlicht. Auf dieser Basis stellen wir die Konzeption der PRIO-Intervention vor, die im Kern aus drei vernetzten Phasen und einem prozessbegleitenden multi-stakeholder Koordinierungsteam besteht. Dieser Ansatz soll insbesondere den Athletinnen und Athleten die Möglichkeit geben, sich aktiv an der Entwicklung von Lösungen zur Optimierung ihres Stützpunktnetzwerks zu beteiligen. Durch die Evaluierung des Implementierungsprozesses lassen sich zudem neue Erkenntnisse über die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen partizipationsbasierter Interventionen der Organisationsentwicklung im Leistungssport gewinnen. Zusammenfassung Nachwuchsathleten befinden sich in einer Lebensphase, die durch erhebliche soziale, psychische und physiologische Veränderungen charakterisiert ist. Diese Transformationen beeinflussen die sportliche Karriere und die Entwicklung der Athleten grundlegend. Gerade im Spitzensport kann insbesondere der Wachstumsprozess zu spezifischen, bisher in der soziologischen Forschung weitgehend vernachlässigten Problemlagen führen. Der Artikel untersucht Entstehungsbedingungen und die soziale Bedeutung wachstumsbedingter Krisen im Kontext des Nachwuchsleistungssports. Zugrunde liegt eine sozialkonstruktivistische Perspektive auf den Prozess des Aufwachsens und die Körpersozialisation von Nachwuchsathleten. Die biologische und soziale Bedingtheit (...) des Körpers wird als ko-konstruktiv konzeptionalisiert. Ausgehend von qualitativen Interviews und teilnehmenden Beobachtungen im deutschen Nachwuchsleistungssport zeigen sich vier typische Problemlagen: Fehlpassung, Asynchronität, Bezugsgruppenwechsel und Überlastungen. Zusammenfassung Der Begriff,interkultureller Konflikt' wird nicht nur in Medien und Öffentlichkeit, sondern auch in der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion zur Bezeichnung von Auseinandersetzungen verwendet, an denen Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund beteiligt sind. Den Konfliktbeteiligten werden dabei Mentalitätsunterschiede attestiert, die häufig mit Verweis auf kulturelle Differenzen erklärt werden. Der Beitrag liefert Erklärungen dafür, warum solche Auseinandersetzungen im Sport so selbstverständlich als,interkulturelle' Konflikte gekennzeichnet werden. Im Mittelpunkt der konflikt­theoretischen Analyse steht die Frage, wie das,Interkulturelle' zum Topos von Konflikten im Sport wird. Ziel ist es, gängige (...) Annahmen des Diskurses über interkulturelle Konflikte im Sport kritisch zu hinterfragen. Den theoretischen Rahmen hierfür bildet die systemtheoretische Konfliktsoziologie. (shrink)

Gustav Theodor Fechner was one of the main proponents of inductive metaphysics in the 19th century. The idea of inductive metaphysics is to use empirical sources and inductive forms of inference in metaphysics. Although this sounds like a research program which might well appeal to scientifically minded philosophers, some of Fechner’s metaphysical conclusions look very suspicious from a scientific viewpoint. For example, Fechner famously argues that the planets and stars are animated by a soul and that the same holds for (...) the whole universe. In the present article it is shown that Fechner’s mystical cosmological views are based on a principle of analogy which is too permissive and that as a result of that his central argument to the conclusion that the earth is animated by a soul is not correct. As the article argues, the principle Fechner bases his inference on has to be supplemented by a causal condition along the lines of Mary Hesse’s account of analogical inferences, a condition Fechner at least implicitly recognizes but fails to meet. In the extensive methodology of his Logik, Wilhelm Wundt examines in detail the methodological procedure in the individual sciences. As will be shown in this article, these investigations are not only intended to clarify or improve the procedures in the individual sciences, but also to be of benefit to philosophy and especially to metaphysics. Wundt belongs to the traditional line of inductive metaphysics, whose representatives were of the opinion that metaphysics should be based on the results and methods of the (...) individual sciences. In this sense, Wundt's detailed investigation of the methods of the individual sciences should be understood as a prelude to an inductive metaphysics. By means of a central example, namely the introduction of the concept of causality based on an inference to the best explanation, this article shows how Wundt conceives the construction of a metaphysics based on the foundations of the individual sciences. This paper argues that the dominant modes of academic address, the conference paper, the journal article, and the monograph, reinforce problematic and exclusionary assumptions concerning what counts as legitimate research, whilst also restricting academic enquiry and impoverishing intellectual life. It makes its case by exploring in some detail the intellectual commitments of one the West’s more wayward 20th century thinkers, Georges Bataille. It suggests that Bataille presents not simply a conceptual armoury (and one among many) for critiquing Western logocentrism from (...) within, but offers an example of what a less domesticated, less stylistically narrowed mode of thinking might look like. This paper examines Michael Young's 1958 dystopia, The Rise of the Meritocracy. In this book, the word 'meritocracy' was coined and used in a pejorative sense. Today, however, meritocracy represents a positive ideal against which we measure the justice of our institutions. This paper argues that, when read in the twenty-first century, Young's dystopia does little to dislodge the implicit appeal of a meritocratic society. It examines the principles of education and administrative justice upon which meritocracy is based, suggesting that (...) since 1958 those principles have changed. Young's warning no longer has any effect on us because the meritocratic system it warns us against has been transformed. (shrink)
