The attempt to relate distinctions in perceptual theory to different physiological systems leads to numerous exceptions and inconsistencies. A more promising approach to the reconciliation of constructivist theory and direct perception is to recognize that perception does involve inference, as the constructivists insist, but that inference is a process in logic that does not require unconscious reasoning and need be no more thought-like than resonance.

Trois débats nous obsèdent : autour du genre, des droits de l'animal, de l'euthanasie. Et trois disciplines politiquement correctes traitent désormais de ces questions dans le monde universitaire : gender studies, animal studies, bioéthique. Cependant, lorsqu'on lit les textes des fondateurs de ces disciplines, John Money, Judith Butler, Peter Singer, Donna Haraway et quelques autres, on s'aperçoit que, derrière les bons sentiments affichés, se font jour des conséquences absurdes sinon abjectes. Si le genre n'est pas lié au sexe, pourquoi ne (...) pas en changer tous les matins? Si le corps est à la disposition de notre conscience, pourquoi ne pas le modifier à l'infini? S'il n'y a pas de différence entre animaux et humains, pourquoi ne pas faire des expériences scientifiques sur les comateux plutôt que sur les animaux? Pourquoi ne pas avoir de relations sexuelles avec son chien, voire l'épouser? S'il est des vies dignes d'être vécues et d'autres qui ne le sont pas, pourquoi ne pas liquider les " infirmes ", y compris les enfants " défectueux "? Pourquoi ne pas nationaliser les organes des quasi-morts au profit d'humains plus prometteurs? Jean-François Braunstein a mené un travail considérable et novateur : il a lu les milliers de pages de ces penseurs célébrés dans le monde occidental ; il revient sur leurs idées, leurs contradictions, leur parcours personnel ; il analyse, souligne, contredit, déconstruit. L'erreur consiste à vouloir " effacer les limites " : entre les sexes, entre les animaux et les humains, entre les vivants et les morts. Il convient, au contraire, d'affronter ces limites qui nous constituent. Oui, parfois la philosophie devient folle, quand elle oublie l'homme. (shrink)

Les lectures de Canguilhem comme philosophe appartenant à une tradition néo-kantienne, comme métaphysicien, philosophe « vitaliste », ou « philosophe du concept » proche du structuralisme et du marxisme ont un intérêt, mais montrent aussi des limites. Aborder sa production à partir de son constant intérêt pour l’histoire des sciences peut aider à en restituer l’unité : l’histoire des sciences est certes l’objet de recherche principal de Canguilhem, mais elle est traitée de manière philosophique et a des objectifs éthiques et (...) politiques. Use of the drill in Archaic sculpture : the technique of the running drill. In most works treating the techniques of ancient Greek sculpture, the date of appearance of the running drill varies between the beginning of the second half of the 5th c. and the third quarter of the 4th c. B. C. No mention of a use in the Archaic period is made and the technical definitions are often unclear, going as far as confusing the tool with the (...) manner of its use. The study of tool marks, undertaken within the framework of research on the techniques of Archaic Greek sculpture, shows that the running drill appears to have been in use toward the middle of the 6th c. at Samos, then in a more sustained manner at the end of the 6th and the beginning of the 5th c. at the Athenian Akropolis and at Delphi. Le chineo est une coutume héritée de l’époque coloniale selon laquelle un homme criollo s’introduit dans les communautés indigènes pour avoir des relations sexuelles avec leurs femmes. Parfois librement consenties, ces unions sont toutefois souvent réalisées avec violence. Les plaintes pour viols commencent à être davantage entendues par la justice argentine. L’analyse d’un procès tenu en 2007 souligne le rôle joué par des travaux anthropologiques et historiques dans l’argumentaire de l’un des juges.

L’œuvre du criminologue italien Cesare Lombroso illustre le fait que la médecine, au xixe siècle, n’est pas seulement une technique thérapeutique mais qu’elle propose bien plutôt une véritable « vision médicale du monde ». La médecine entend résoudre définitivement les problèmes philosophiques traditionnels. Résumé La religion de l’Humanité que fonde Auguste Comte vise à développer le lien social entre les hommes actuellement existants, mais surtout à renforcer leurs liens avec ceux des hommes des générations antérieures qui ont fait progresser l’Humanité. En affirmant que « les vivants sont toujours, et de plus en plus, gouvernés nécessairement par les morts », Comte réagit contre « l’insurrection continue des vivants contre les morts » qu’il qualifie de « maladie occidentale ». Les morts qui le méritent (...) accèdent à un équivalent de l’immortalité chrétienne, puisque leurs pensées et surtout leurs sentiments survivent dans les cerveaux de leurs successeurs. Comte ne se contente pas de justifier la mort d’un point de vue scientifique et sociologique, il en vient même à la chérir à travers l’amour qu’il éprouve pour Clotilde morte. François Dagognet (1924-2015) nous a laissé une oeuvre immense et foisonnante : près de soixante-dix ouvrages, sur les thèmes les plus divers, de l'épistémologie à l'art contemporain, de la politique au droit, de l'argent à la morale, de la peau au trouble, sans oublier le paysage, ou l'agronomie, les déchets ou les musées, parmi bien d'autres sujets. Sa curiosité universelle et inassouvie égalait, voire dépassait, celle de son maître Bachelard. Montrer comment Dagognet a illustré l'épistémologie "à la française", et l'a (...) radicalement transformée en la faisant sortir de ses cadres traditionnels, tel est l'enjeu de ce recueil, issu d'un colloque en hommage à François Dagognet qui s'est tenu à l'Institut d'histoire et philosophie des sciences et des techniques de Paris 1, qu'il a un temps dirigé. This article examines Aristotle’s discussion of the Spartan revolt of the Partheniae in Politics V.7. Aristotle appears to use the Partheniae as examples of two sources of instability within so-called aristocracies, but the analysis of this case raises delicate interpretive issues. Sections I–III draw upon surviving accounts of the Parthenian revolt from Antiochus, Ephorus and Myron of Priene in order to illuminate the significance of this example for Aristotle’s ethical and political thought. Section IV reconstructs the state of the (...) Spartan constitution around the time of the revolt in order to understand what Aristotle might have thought about what precipitated the revolt. This article argues that generational politics is at stake in the revolt, and Section V locates the revolt’s politics within its broader historical and cultural context. In the end, this article finds that Aristotle may have intended to leave the interpretation of this example ambiguous due to his own unresolved views towards the politics at stake in this revolt. No single theory so far proposed gives a wholly satisfactory account of the origin and maintenance of bird-song dialects. This failure is the consequence of a weak comparative literature that precludes careful comparisons among species or studies, and of the complexity of the issues involved. Complexity arises because dialects seem to bear upon a wide range of features in the life history of bird species. We give an account of the principal issues in bird-song dialects: evolution of vocal learning, experimental (...) findings on song ontogeny, dialect descriptions, female and male reactions to differences in dialect, and population genetics and dispersal.We present a synthetic theory of the origin and maintenance of song dialects, one that accommodates most of the different systems reported in the literature. The few data available suggest that large, regional dialect populations are genetically differentiated; this pattern is correlated with reduced dispersal between dialects, assortative mating by females, and male-male exclusion. At the same time, “subdialects” may be formed within regional dialects. Subdialect clusters are usually small and may represent vocal mimicry among a few adjacent territorial males. The relative importance of genetic and social adaptation may contribute to the emergence of subdialects; their distinctiveness may be correlated with the degree of polygyny, for example. Thus, subdialect formation is linked to one theory of the evolution of repertoire size, but data are too fragmentary to examine this idea critically. (shrink)

In a recent paper, Guy Kahane asks whether God’s existence is something we should want to be true. Expanding on some cryptic remarks from Thomas Nagel, Kahane’s informative and wide-ranging piece eventually addresses whether personal anti-theism is justified, where personal anti-theism is the view that God’s existence would make things worse overall for oneself. In what follows, I develop, defend, but ultimately reject the Meaningful Life Argument, according to which if God’s existence precludes the realization of certain goods that seem (...) to an agent to constitute a meaningful life, it is rational for an agent both to believe that personal anti-theism is true and to prefer that God not exist. No serious scholar in Christian Social Ethics today can introduce students to his or her field without taking into account the contributions of African American scholarship. The long traditions of Christian Social Ethics in the black church, and the innovative research and writing performed by African-American scholars in recent years are now essential components of a critical study of Ethics. Yet up to now, knowing how best to introduce the fruits of African American ethical scholarship to students, particularly those in (...) the survey class, has been difficult. Good resources exist, yet too often they were not written with the needs of introductory students in mind. This book meets that need by providing an overview of the most important developments in African American approaches to Christian Social Ethics. Written with the needs of beginning students in mind, it will offer insight into the particular ways that African American scholarship has shaped the world of Christian Ethics. (shrink)

In this study, researchers examined the assumption that senior-level undergraduate students from private colleges universities possess higher levels of moral and ethical development than students from public institutions. In addition, the researchers sought to determine (a) if there was a relationship between narcissistic personality traits and the level of moral reasoning, and (b) there was a difference in the level of narcissistic personality tendencies of business students from private vs. public institutions based on demographic and textual variables. A cluster sampling (...) approach was used in the sample selection. The sample was limited to students majoring in general business at seven public and six private universities in North Dakota and Minnesota. A total of 269 subjects participated in the research project: 145 at private institutions and 124 at public institutions. The Defining Issues Test version 2 (DIT-2) and the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI) were used to collect data at seven public and six private institutions. Students from public and private universities scored similarly on the DIT-2. A significant difference between the NPI scores of the private college students and the public college students was found. No significant relationship was found between the NPI score and level of moral reasoning. Business educators should be concerned that an increase in the number of business ethics courses completed did not significantly impact students' moral reasoning or narcissistic traits. (shrink)

Pro-theism is the view that God’s existence would be good in that God’s existence increases the value of a world. Anti-theism is the view that God’s existence would decrease the value of a world. We develop and defend the morally good agent argument for pro-theism. The basic idea is that morally good agents tend to add value to states of affairs, and God, moral agent par excellence is no exception.
