This article studies the reinterpretation and appropriation of exoticism in French translations-adaptations of imaginary voyages from the eighteenth century, particularly those of Desfontaines (Les Voyages du Capitaine Lemuel Gulliver), Berault-Bercastel (Voyages récréatifs du chevalier de Quevedo), and Louis de Mailly (The Three Princes of Serendip). The translators wanted to adapt the original work to the “taste of France”: they were confronted with a double exoticism, the one described in the journey and the one intrinsic to the work. Their adaptation work (...) is based on the search for cultural equivalences, on the suppression of subversive passages and on the preservation of an agreed representation of the elsewhere and the fantastic. Some translators rewrote a large part of these works so that the literary genre fit the voyage. (shrink)

The Sensible World and the World of Expression presents the lecture notes for a course taught by Maurice Marleau-Ponty, a central figure of phenomenological philosophy, at a key point in his career.

At the time of his death in May 1961, Maurice Merleau-Ponty held the chair of Philosophy at the College de France. Together with Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, he was cofounder of the successful and influential review Les Temps Modernes. However, after Merleau-Ponty's two studies of Marxist theory and practice (Humanisme et Terreur and Les Aventures de la Dialectique), he alienated both orthodox Marxists and "mandarins of the left" such as Sartre and de Beauvoir. Perhaps his most (...) lasting contribution to the interpretation of human existence was his formulation of a positive philosophical approach to psychology the foundations of which were clearly outlined in The Structure of Behavior and later more fully developed in Phenomenology of Perception. Written between 1945 and 1947, the essays in Sense and Non-Sense provide an excellent introduction to Merleau-Ponty's thought.

Collected in this text are the written notes of courses on the concept of nature give by Merleau-Ponty at the College de France in the 1950s. The ideas that animated the philosopher's lectures emerge in an early, fluid form in the process of being elaborated, negotiated, critiqued and reconsidered.

This book consists of Northwestern University Studies in Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy.

Dans une lettre, Merleau-Ponty décrit ainsi l'intention qu'il a développée dans cet ouvrage, écrit pour l'essentiel en 1952 et resté depuis en chantier : «Toute grande prose est aussi une recréation de l'instrument signifiant, désormais manié selon une syntaxe neuve. Le prosaïque se borne à toucher par des signes convenus des significations déjà installées dans la culture. La grande prose est l'art de capter un sens qui n'avait jamais été objectivé jusque-là et de le rendre accessible à tous ceux (...) qui parlent la même langue. Un écrivain se survit lorsqu'il n'est plus capable de fonder ainsi une universalité nouvelle, et de communiquer dans le risque.»Le philosophe nous livre ici ses réflexions sur le langage en général, mais aussi une théorie de l'expression qui l'engage autant vers les thèmes du dialogue et du rapport à autrui, vers la problématique anthropologique de la communication, que vers l'expressivité dans l'art et dans ses premières manifestations chez l'enfant. Signes, pour Maurice Merleau-Ponty, n'était pas un alphabet complet, mais plutôt ces signaux soudains comme un regard que nous recevons des événements, des livres et des choses. Ou qu'il nous semble recevoir d'eux : il faut croire que nous y mettons du nôtre, puisqu'il y a des constantes dans ces messages. En philosophie, l'idée d'une vision, d'une parole opérante, d'une opération métaphysique de la chair, d'un échange où le visible et l'invisible sont rigoureusement simultanés. En politique, le sentiment que (...) les mécanismes d'étouffement, de paralysie ou de terreur ne sont pas irréversibles. Si l'auteur a bien lu, ces signes, donc, ne seraient pas de si mauvais augure. En sorte que Signes, loin d'être une traversée des apparences, devient pour le lecteur d'aujourd'hui une traversée de l'œuvre même, dans ses grandes interrogations, de Merleau-Ponty. (shrink)

Maurice Merleau-Ponty is one of the few major phenomenologists to engage extensively with empirical research in the sciences, and the only one to examine child psychology with rigor and in such depth.

"Dans l'œuvre d'art ou dans la théorie comme dans la chose sensible, le sens est inséparable du signe. L'expression, donc, n'est jamais achevée. La plus haute raison voisine avec la déraison. "Cette tension essentielle ainsi formulée par l'auteur sous-tend l'ensemble des essais réunis ici sous trois grandes perspectives : celle de l'art, celle de la philosophie et celle de la politique. L'étude consacrée à Cézanne comme celle qui analyse le cinéma du point de vue de la psychologie moderne s'attachent l'une (...) et l'autre à montrer la démarche créatrice cherchant sans cesse, face à "l'énigme du monde", quelles réponses nouvelles apporter à l'interrogation humaine. L'examen de l'existentialisme permet de clarifier les positions adoptées, dès la fin de la Seconde Guerre, par rapport à Hegel et à Marx, ainsi que de maintenir une réflexion politique et critique, en dépit de la débâcle prévue du communisme, sans retomber dans les séductions d'une "fin de l'histoire".
