    Philosophy and Raising Good Citizens.Stephen Law - 2024 - Think 23 (67):65-68.
What's the best way to raise good citizens – individuals who will do the right thing even in the most challenging of circumstances? I argue that philosophy has an important role to play.

‘I should do what?’ Addressing research misconduct through values alignment.Kate Chatfield & Emma Law - 2024 - Research Ethics 20 (2):251-271.
Evidence suggests that the incidence of research misconduct is not in decline despite efforts to improve awareness, education and governance mechanisms. Two responses to this problem are favoured: first, the promotion of an agent-centred ethics approach to enhance researchers’ personal responsibility and accountability, and second, a change in research culture to relieve perceived pressures to engage in misconduct. This article discusses the challenges for both responses and explains how normative coherence through values alignment might assist. We argue that research (...)

    Values Education in Hong Kong School Music Education: A Sociological Critique.Wing-Wah Law & Wai-Chung Ho - 2004 - British Journal of Educational Studies 52 (1):65 - 82.
This article examines the social development of Hong Kong's cultural and national identity since its return from the UK to the People's Republic of China nearly six years ago, focusing on the extent to which Hong Kong students are now inculcated in traditional Chinese music and express their devotion to the PRC through singing the national anthem. Hong Kong music teachers experience conflicts concerning their roles as music teachers and as purveyors of values education. These observations raise fundamental questions (...)

Science and Math Interest and Gender Stereotypes: The Role of Educator Gender in Informal Science Learning Sites.Luke McGuire, Tina Monzavi, Adam J. Hoffman, Fidelia Law, Matthew J. Irvin, Mark Winterbottom, Adam Hartstone-Rose, Adam Rutland, Karen P. Burns, Laurence Butler, Marc Drews, Grace E. Fields & Kelly Lynn Mulvey - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Interest in science and math plays an important role in encouraging STEM motivation and career aspirations. This interest decreases for girls between late childhood and adolescence. Relatedly, positive mentoring experiences with female teachers can protect girls against losing interest. The present study examines whether visitors to informal science learning sites differ in their expressed science and math interest, as well as their science and math stereotypes following an interaction with either a male or female educator. Participants were visitors to one (...)

Understanding Parents’ Roles in Children’s Learning and Engagement in Informal Science Learning Sites.Angelina Joy, Fidelia Law, Luke McGuire, Channing Mathews, Adam Hartstone-Rose, Mark Winterbottom, Adam Rutland, Grace E. Fields & Kelly Lynn Mulvey - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Informal science learning sites create opportunities for children to learn about science outside of the classroom. This study analyzed children’s learning behaviors in ISLS using video recordings of family visits to a zoo, children’s museum, or aquarium. Furthermore, parent behaviors, features of the exhibits and the presence of an educator were also examined in relation to children’s behaviors. Participants included 63 children and 44 parents in 31 family groups. Results showed that parents’ science questions and explanations were positively related to (...)

The Emergence of 5-Year-Olds’ Behavioral Difficulties: Analyzing Risk and Protective Pathways in the United Kingdom and Germany.Wei Huang, Sabine Weinert, Helen Wareham, James Law, Manja Attig, Jutta von Maurice & Hans-Günther Roßbach - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
This study aimed to advance our understanding of 5-year-olds’ behavioral difficulties by modeling and testing both mediational protective and risk pathways simultaneously. Drawing on two national samples from different Western European countries—the United Kingdom and Germany, the proposed model considered observed sensitive parental interactive behaviors and tested child vocabulary as protective pathways connecting parental education with children’s behavioral outcomes; the risk pathways focused on negative parental disciplinary practices linking parental education, parental distress, and children’s difficult temperament to children’s (...)

In this paper I argue that although the Republic’s tripartite theory of the soul is not explicitly endorsed in Plato’s late work the Laws, it continues to inform the Laws from beneath the surface of the text. In particular, I argue that the spirited part of the soul continues to play a major role in moral education and development in the Laws (as it did in earlier texts, where it is characterized as reason’s psychic ‘ally’). I examine the programs (...)

Leadership in Education, Corrections and Law Enforcement: A Commitment to Ethics, Equity and Excellence fills a unique gap in the knowledge base - the juncture between leadership, ethics, law, and how public institutions/organizations understand and practice the essence of all three. Authors from law enforcement, corrections education, and educational leadership present different yet overlapping constructs around ethics and law, and make an important step towards reconciling these differing views to demonstrate the significance of collaboration and partnerships for a (...)

Thinking Against the Grain: Essays on Morality, Education, and Law.Rodger Beehler - 2007 - Upa.
This work is a connected series of essays on morality, education, law, and society. All of the essays indeed "think against the grain," challenging some of the dominant thinkers and fashions of our time in a strikingly original and penetrating way. They force the reader to consider our hegemonic values, how we are to live our lives and view our world. Political theorists, social scientists, philosophers, educators, legal scholars, and cultural and literary theorists will find them profitable to study. (...)
