Ramon Llull hat das größte mittelalterliche Korpus von literarischen Dialogen in der Romania hinterlassen. Es steht im lateinischen, romanischen und arabischen Kontext der theologisch-philosophischen Diskussion. Die Arbeit untersucht sechs der 26 Dialoge Llulls eingehender im Hinblick auf ihre ideologische Ausrichtung und die literarischen Verfahren, die diese im Dialog transportieren. Llull entwickelt dabei bestimmte mittelalterliche Dialogtraditionen zu einem eigenen Modell weiter, das eine iberoromanische Linie lullistischer Dialoge begründet. Die Arbeit enthält die Erstedition der »Consolatio Venetorum«.

No one is surprised anymore by the dialogue between Buddhism and Western science, which develops the foundations of cognitive and contemplative sciences. But there have been requests for reflection on the results achieved, or even for a strategy for analytical research of the Buddhist East, which brings this dialogue to the philosophical level. And this level of discussion is, in fact, the dialogue between Buddhism and Western philosophy, which requires a new discourse that should be built on (...) their common ground. And the first question that arises against this background is how to focus attention on the philosophical aspect of Buddhism, which orientalists usually call “Buddhist philosophy”. Thus, realizing the beginning of the dialogue between Buddhist and Western philosophies, we are faced with the need to take the next, but already conscious step in the direction of this discussion. In order to make this step confident, we need to know where and how to start, and what key subjects we can rely on. Therefore, in an effort to find possible warnings against gross mistakes in such discussions, we sought the help of Western experts in the field of Buddhist studies by reading their works and talking to them. One of the well-known scholars is Professor Jan Westerhoff, who kindly agreed to give me an interview and answer some questions: whether there is a Buddhist philosophy; what are the approaches and stages of its research; what are the peculiarities of using the terms of Western philosophy in these studies; what can be the criterion for the best reading of traditional Buddhist texts; what can such a discussion give to contemporary Western philosophy, etc. This interview was not intended to be a conceptual deepening of either Buddhist or Western philosophy; we only tried to identify key questions that could start a dialog between them in the right direction. The Washington National Cathedral, set on the highest hill in the capital city of the world's greatest economic and military power, is an iconic location for an examination of the intersection of immaterial faith, material power, and human conscious experience. It is a location made even more symbolic due to the fact that surrounding the Cathedral on three sides are three private schools -- an elementary school (Beauvoir) to the east, a boys' school (St. Albans) to the south, and a (...) girls' school (National Cathedral School) to the north. The students at these private schools include children of persons who wield the secular power headquartered in the City below the Cathedral Tower. Every day these students study and compete upon a hill giving them panoramic views over the great monuments and symbols of American power: the Capitol Dome, the Washington Monument, the entire City. And the Cathedral that marks their spot upon this globe is visible from all over the region, high above the City. These students are intelligent and informed, and thus for purposes of a dramatic-oriented form of exploration of interesting issues, provide a persuasive characterization for participants in a dialog of two iconic children, older teenagers, a boy and a girl, students at these schools and worshippers in the Cathedral, to develop an examination of themes of faith, power, and the experience of sentience in the material world, walking within and around the Washington National Cathedral, two of its affiliated schools, and the gardens and forests surrounding. The approach recalls the form of the dialogs of Plato, in which persons of elite educational and cultural status encounter each other within a specific building or location, and proceed to discuss such matters as are provoked to mind by the encounter of those minds in that place. The major character of the piece, Merian Validus, is, among other things, a bell-ringer of the Cathedral, a denizen of its highest tower -- as are in reality a group of the girls of NCS. She is an Esmeralda performing the role of Quasimodo. After reading this, think of that the next time you land at Reagan National Airport and catch your cab, looking right at the Cathedral as you speed north into the City. (shrink)

In light of recent technological innovations and discourses around data and algorithmic analytics, scholars of many stripes are attempting to develop critical agendas and responses to these developments. In this mutual interview, three scholars discuss the stakes, ideas, responsibilities, and possibilities of critical data studies. The resulting dialog seeks to explore what kinds of critical approaches to these topics, in theory and practice, could open and make available such approaches to a broader audience.

In this paper, we study dialogue as a game, but not only in the sense in which there would exist winning strategies and a priori rules. Dialogue is not governed by game rules like for chess or other games, since even if we start from a priori rules, it is always possible to play with them, provided that some invariant properties are preserved. An important discovery of Ludics is that such properties may be expressed in geometrical terms. The (...) main feature of a dialogue is “convergence”. Intuitively, a dialogue “diverges” when it stops prematurely by some disruption, or a violation of the tacit agreed upon conditions of the discourse. It converges when the two speakers go together towards a situation where they agree at least on some points. As we shall see, convergence may be thought of through the geometrical concept of orthogonality . Utterances in a dialogue have as their content, not only the processes (similar to proofs) which lead to them from a monologic view, but also their interactions with other utterances. Finally, any utterance must be seen as co-constructed in an interaction between two processes. That is to say that it not only contains one speaker’s intentions but also his or her expectations from the other interlocutor. From our viewpoint, discursive strategies like narration , elaboration , topicalization may derive from such interactions, as well as speech acts like assertion, question and denegation. (shrink)

What is the proper unit of analysis in the psycholinguistics of dialog? While classical approaches are largely based on models of individual linguistic processing, recent advances stress the social coordinative nature of dialog. In the influential interactive alignment model, dialogue is thus approached as the progressive entrainment of interlocutors' linguistic behaviors toward the alignment of situation models. Still, the driving mechanisms are attributed to individual cognition in the form of automatic structural priming. Challenging these ideas, we outline a dynamical (...) framework for studying dialog based on the notion of interpersonal synergy. Crucial to this synergetic model is the emphasis on dialog as an emergent, self-organizing, interpersonal system capable of functional coordination. A consequence of this model is that linguistic processes cannot be reduced to the workings of individual cognitive systems but must be approached also at the interpersonal level. From the synergy model follows a number of new predictions: beyond simple synchrony, good dialog affords complementary dynamics, constrained by contextual sensitivity and functional specificity. We substantiate our arguments by reference to recent empirical studies supporting the idea of dialog as interpersonal synergy. (shrink)

Conducting effective classroom dialog is an important foundation for high-quality classrooms. This study investigates the characteristics of effective classroom dialog from the perspective of Chinese mathematics classrooms. Classroom videotapes from 40 expert and 33 novice teachers were selected from a national project and analyzed through a developed coding framework. Results showed that the dominant types of dialog in expert teachers’ classrooms were related to Basic Knowledge, Construction, Analysis, and Personal Information. Compared to novice teachers, expert teachers’ classrooms have a significantly (...) lower proportion of dialog on Basic Knowledge and significantly higher proportions of dialog on Personal Information and Speculation. Based on expert teachers’ classrooms, the characteristics of effective classroom dialog in the Chinese context were discussed. The analytical framework for classroom dialog developed in this study could be a powerful tool for subsequent research. Suggestions are provided on increasing the effectiveness of classroom dialog. Therefore, understanding presupposes a kind of dialogue. The article is based on the assertion that conflict constitutes an important element of social reality both in its moral and political aspect. The conflicts of: Antigone and Creon, Socrates and Athens, Christ and the Pharisees, Gandhi and the British, M.L. King and the racists, have clearly contributed to moral development. Conflicts arise from the human need of using one’s freedom in questioning the existing order, in distrusting every truth. It is not the fact of the existence of conflicts that (...) is bad for a civil society, but the lack of skills to solve them. Hence the importance of the need for a dialogue in civil society. The author presents various kinds of dialogue and supports rationality as a moral stand. (shrink)

Hayek's philosophy of law has Kantian features, but he offers indirect utilitarian arguments for them. Hayek's argument might be strengthened by considering that the utilitarian has an interest in issues of truth and falsity and thus in the individual as the bearer of critical judgments. Individuals might thus be accorded?dialogue rights?; upon a episte?mological basis, an idea which is further strengthened by the consideration that dialogue may be extended to the appraisal of the validity of utilitarianism. Physicians have for some time been questioning the prevailing view of medicine as applied biology. It is urged that medicine needs to be reconceived so as to provide appropriate emphasis on the patient's experience and understanding of illness. After reviewing these arguments and the scientific paradigm underlying the received view in light of certain themes in medicine's history and of current thinking, Pellegrino's thesis is analyzed: medicine should be understood as an inherently moral enterprise, a form of praxis focused on (...) "the healing relationship". Understanding the illness experience and the professed healer's "compassion" supports Pellegrino's view, and suggests that the healing relationship is perhaps best conceived as a form of dialogue. Es mag seltsam anmuten, Dialog und Undarstellbares zusammenzubringen. Was haben Probleme der Darstellung, gängigerweise im Bereich der Erkenntnistheorie, der Semiologie oder der analytischen Sprachphilosophie angesiedelt, mit solchen des Dialogs, der ja genuin sozialphilosophisch lokalisiert wird, gemein? Man erkennt eine Gemeinsamkeit, wenn man betrachtet, wie das Undarstellbare selbst Theorien zum Dialog herausfordert. Wird der Dialogbegriff von Undarstellbarem her gedacht, so wird er nicht einfach aus der Sozialphilosophie in die theoretische Philosophie übertragen, sondern verweist auf einen eigenen Sinn von Dialogizität in der (...) Theorie. Der Band schlägt also eine Reaktualisierung des Dialogbegriffs vor, die bspw. in den Bereichen Diskursanalyse, Sprachphilosophie und Ästhetik spielt. Diese Reaktualisierung bezieht sich besonders auf die Auseinandersetzung zwischen 'deutscher' und 'französischer' Philosophie und wird in drei Schritten entfaltet. In einem ersten Teil wird beleuchtet, wie Dialoge jenseits einer sozialphilosophischen Explikation aussehen könnten. Dann werden Einbrüche des Undarstellbaren in Diskurse nachgezeichnet. A revival of the dialogue between phenomenology and psychiatry currently takes place in the best international journals of psychiatry. In this article, we analyse this revival and the role given to phenomenology in this context. Although this dialogue seems at first sight interesting, we show that it is problematic. It leads indeed to use phenomenology in a special way, transforming it into a discipline dealing with empirical facts, so that what is called “phenomenology” has finally nothing to do (...) with phenomenology. This so-called phenomenology tallies however with what we have always called semiology. We try to explain the reasons why phenomenology is misused in that way. In our view, this transformation of phenomenology into an empirical and objectifying discipline is explained by the role attributed to phenomenology by contemporary authors, which is to solve the problems raised by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. In this paper we describe a method for the specification of computationalmodels of argument using dialogue games. The method, which consists ofsupplying a set of semantic definitions for the performatives making upthe game, together with a state transition diagram, is described in full.Its use is illustrated by some examples of varying complexity, includingtwo complete specifications of particular dialogue games, Mackenzie's DC,and the authors' own TDG. Today everyone knows that Tübingen is the center of the current tendency to find Plato’s genuine philosophy not in his dialogues but in Aristotle’s reports of his "unwritten doctrines" because of the publications of H. J. Krämer and K. Gaiser, both of whom studied and now teach at the University of Tübingen. That fact was not yet evident in March, 1958, when Hermann Gundert went there to deliver a lecture on "Der Platonische Dialog," in which he stated almost the exact (...) opposite. Aristotle’s reports are to be subordinated to the dialogues themselves, which reveal Plato’s true mind when their content and form are studied together, when the interconnection of dialectical method and dialogic context is detected. That lecture sparked vigorous discussion since both Krämer and Gaiser were in the audience. Ten years after the lecture Gundert published it as part of the "Bibliothek der klassischen Altertumswissenschaften" series. In the same year he got out a long article in the journal Studium Generale, which now appears as the book under review. (shrink)

Franz. Zsfassung u.d.T.: La philosophie et la science-fiction.

Jurgen Werbick tritt in diesem Buch mit Papst Franziskus in einen Dialog uber die Gottesfrage, wobei er sich in manche Hintergrunde hineintastet, die in den Texten des Papstes nur angedeutet werden. Sein erneuter Versuch, eine theologische Gotteslehre zu entwerfen, ist fur theologisch Interessierte, die sich uber das theologische Profil des gegenwartigen Papstes informieren und daruber hinaus in die elementaren Fragen eines biblisch-christlichen Redens von Gott heute einarbeiten wollen. Papst Franziskus hat einen neuen Ton in die lehramtliche Verkundigung gebracht. Seine Texte (...) leiden nicht unter der Last der Unmissverstandlichkeit und des Rechthabenmussens. Sie langweilen nicht mit der Ausgewogenheit einer Abhandlung, die alles im Blick haben will, um dann mit dem Vorwurf zu kommen, "die Anderen" hatten das Entscheidende nicht ausreichend gewurdigt. Papst Franziskus' Texte provozieren, aber sie fallen nicht in die Jammer-Tonlage oder den Gestus des leicht genervten Rechthabers. Sie verkundigen nicht eine lehramtliche Normaltheologie, der man tunlichst folgen sollte, damit es in Verkundigung und Theologie nicht mehr so viele Misstone und Unbesonnenheiten gebe. Kurz gesagt: Diese Texte fordern - mitunter ziemlich ungeschutzt - zum Dialog heraus und billigen Lesern und Horern eine eigene Stimme zu. Es lohnt sich, auf diesen anderen theologischen Tonfall genau zu horen, denn er ladt zum Gesprach und fordert auf zum Nachfragen, Zusammenhange-Entdecken, Weiterdenken, auch Anders-Denken. (shrink)
