After Aquinas, Anselm is the most significant medieval thinker. Utterly convinced of the truth of the Christian religion, he was none the less determined to try to make sense of his Christian faith, and the result is a rigorous engagement with problems of logic which remain relevant for philosophers and theologians even today. This translation provides the first opportunity to read all of Anselm's most important works in one volume.

Thomas Williams' edition offers an Introduction well suited for use in an introductory philosophy course, as well as his own preeminent translation of the text.

Im Rahmen des Modellvorhabens „Patienten als Partner—Tumorpatienten und ihr Mitwirken bei medizinischen Entscheidungen“ wurden zwischen März 2002 und August 2003 272 palliativ behandelte Tumorpatienten nach ihrer Einstellung zur Patientenverfügung und zur gewünschten Beteiligung an medizinischen Entscheidungen befragt. Von den Befragten kannten 30% Patientenverfügungen nicht, darunter signifikant mehr Befragte mit formal niedrigerem Bildungsabschluss. Es hatten bereits 11% eine Patientenverfügung abgeschlossen, 22% wollten wahrscheinlich eine abschließen, und 30% wollten keine abschließen. Es fand sich ein statistisch signifikanter Zusammenhang zwischen dem Abschluss einer Patientenverfügung (...) und dem Wunsch nach mehr eigener Entscheidungsverantwortung. Die Einstellung zur Patientenverfügung und der Wunsch nach partizipativer Entscheidungsfindung stehen in keinem statistisch signifikanten Zusammenhang. Patienten mit schriftlichen Vorausverfügungen haben einen erhöhten Kommunikations- und Rückkopplungsbedarf, auf den Ärzte sensibel eingehen sollten. Bei der Information über Patientenverfügungen sollten Menschen mit niedrigerem Bildungsstand mehr als bisher berücksichtigt werden. (shrink)

In the Proslogion, St. Anselm presents a philosophical argument for the existence of God. Anselm's proof, known since the time of Kant as the ontological argument for the existence of God, has played an important role in the history of philosophy and has been incorporated in various forms into the systems of Descartes, Leibniz, Hegel, and others. Included in this edition of the Proslogion are Gaunilo's "A Reply on Behalf of the Fool" and St. Anselm's "The Author's Reply to Gaunilo." (...) Proceeding from the thesis of Remi Bragues, that Europe constantly attains its identity in contras and via delimitation, this article describes the Catholic and Protestant concept of Europe which was developed in the 19th century: Both agree in the rejection of Enlightenment ideals, and yet pursue different interests: While the Catholic line strives toward integration by means of the Church, Protestantism relies upon the nation state. These two lines can be understood as blueprints of current controversies: How is the relationship (...) between the nation state and the European Union to be determined? Does Europe need a unifying basis of values? Finally, the article makes a case for integration by means of seeking a common law which is open to different national and worldview traditions, and for seeing the independent profile of Europe in such secular law. »Diakoniewissenschaft« was determined until now in priority by an apologetic interest. Its purposewas before all to demoostrate church's diakonia as an integral component of church actingasweil as theological science. The historic orientation of the previous research corresponded to that. In cantrast to this, the above paper pleads to discard this apologetic schema. It defines »Diakoniewissenschaft« as »applied theology«, as an independent kind of theological science in the different fields of practice. The special feature of the »Diakoniewissenschaft« is the scientific self-reflection (...) of all diaconal activities. It points out religious as weil as theological motives with determine the diaconal practice in the present and the corresponding targets in the future. The articel outlines this type of »diakoniewissenschaftlichen< research at two examples, at the question of the medical ethics and the ekklesiological orientation. (shrink)

Human dignity is a prominent maxim in the contemporary ethical discussion in bioethics. In this debate the concept of human dignity acts as a warrant for human imperfection and fragility, particulary in the case of incapacitated, demented, or terminal ill persons. In this perspective the common foundations of human dignity, based on autonomy, capacity for rational thought, or man as imago dei, are deficient. As the above paper sketches, human dignity is to explain as a relational category rather than an (...) intrinsic quality of men. In addition to this, such an understanding offers numerous links to the reformational doctrine of justification: The value of humans does not depend on their own faculties. (shrink)

Tutz Rendtorff develops his ethical theory in tradition ofFriedrich Schleiermacherand Ernst Troeltsch as Ethical Theology. Ethics is understood not simply as catalogue of moral rules, but from the ethical perspective theological issues come into sight. This article's purpose is to demonstrate this. The three basic elements of the ethical realities of life according to Trutz Rendtorff: givenness of life, giving of life, reflection on life, can be interpreted referring to the three main issues of traditional dogmatics: creation, reconciliation, and redemption.
