Unconsciously Learning Task-Irrelevant Perceptual Sequences.Xiuyan Guo, Shan Jiang, Hongyi Wang, Lei Zhu, Jinghua Tang, Zoltan Dienes & Zhiliang Yang - 2013 - Consciousness and Cognition 22 (1):203-211.
We demonstrated unconscious learning of task-irrelevant perceptual regularities in a Serial Reaction Time task in both visual and auditory domains. Participants were required to respond to (...)different letters or syllables which occurred in random order. Unbeknownst to participants, the color of the two letters or the tone of the syllables varied according to certain rules. Reaction times indicated that people indeed learnt both the color and tonal regularities indicating that task-irrelevant sequence structure can be learned perceptually. In a subsequent prediction test of knowledge of the color or tonal cues using subjective measures, we showed that people could acquire task irrelevant knowledge unconsciously. (shrink)

Policy and Law Assessment of COVID-19 Based on Smooth Transition Autoregressive Model.Jieqi Lei, Xuyuan Wang, Yiming Zhang, Lian Zhu & Lin Zhang - 2021 - Complexity 2021:1-13.
As of the end of October 2020, the cumulative number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 has exceeded 45 million and the cumulative number of deaths has (...)exceeded 1.1 million all over the world. Faced with the fatal pandemic, countries around the world have taken various prevention and control measures. One of the important issues in epidemic prevention and control is the assessment of the prevention and control effectiveness. Changes in the time series of daily new confirmed cases can reflect the impact of policies in certain regions. In this paper, a smooth transition autoregressive model is applied to investigate the intrinsic changes during the epidemic in certain countries and regions. In order to quantitatively evaluate the influence of the epidemic control measures, the sequence is fitted to the STAR model; then, comparisons between the dates of transition points and those of releasing certain policies are applied. Our model well fits the data. Moreover, the nonlinear smooth function within the STAR model reveals that the implementation of prevention and control policies is effective in some regions with different speeds. However, the ineffectiveness is also revealed and the threat of a second wave had already emerged. (shrink)

Financial Self-Efficacy and General Life Satisfaction: The Sequential Mediating Role of High Standards Tendency and Investment Satisfaction.Jianping Hu, Lei Quan, Yanwei Wu, Jia Zhu, Mingliang Deng, Song Tang & Wei Zhang - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Important strides have been made toward understanding the relationship between self-efficacy and life satisfaction. However, existing studies have largely focused on work and academic domains, leaving (...)self-efficacy in the finance domain less frequently investigated. The present study applied the self-efficacy construct to the finance domain, namelyfinancial self-efficacy”, and tested the sequential mediating roles of high standards tendency and investment satisfaction in the relationship between FSE and general life satisfaction. A total of 323 employees from finance-related businesses completed anonymous questionnaires regarding FSE, high standards tendency, investment satisfaction, and general life satisfaction. Results indicated that FSE influenced general life satisfaction through investment satisfaction, and sequentially through high standards tendency and investment satisfaction. These results provide contributions to the current literature on life satisfaction, and positive psychology literature by shedding light on the roles of high standards tendency and investment satisfaction in the relation between FSE and general life satisfaction. How Gas-Hydrate Saturation and Morphology Control Seismic Attenuation: A Case Study From the South Hydrate Ridge.Aoshuang Ji, Tieyuan Zhu, Héctor Marín-Moreno & Xiong Lei - 2021 - Interpretation 9 (2):SD27-SD39.
Prior studies have shown an ambiguous relationship between gas-hydrate saturation and seismic attenuation in different regions, but the effect of gas-hydrate morphology on seismic attenuation of (...) hydrate-bearing sediments was often overlooked. We have combined seismic data with rock-physics modeling to elucidate how gas-hydrate saturation and morphology may control seismic attenuation. To extract P-wave attenuation, we process the vertical seismic profile data within a frequency range of 30150 Hz and the sonic logging data within 1015 kHz from three wells in the south Hydrate Ridge, offshore Oregon, collected during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 204 in 2000. We calculate the P-wave attenuation using spectral matching and centroid frequency shift methods, and we use Archies relationship to derive gas-hydrate saturation from the resistivity data above the bottom-simulating reflection at the same wells. To interpret the observed seismic attenuation in terms of the effects of the gas-hydrate saturation and the morphology, we use the hydrate-bearing effective sediment rock-physics model. By comparing the observed and model-predicted attenuation values, we infer that seismic attenuation appears to not be dominated by any single factorinstead, its variation is likely governed by the gas-hydrate saturation and the morphology; the relationship between seismic attenuation and gas-hydrate saturation varies with different hydrate morphologies; the squirt flow, occurring at different compliances of adjacent pores driven by pressure gradients, may be responsible for the significantly large or small attenuation over a broad frequency range. A Resting-State Brain Functional Network Study in MDD Based on Minimum Spanning Tree Analysis and the Hierarchical Clustering.Xiaowei Li, Zhuang Jing, Bin Hu, Jing Zhu, Ning Zhong, Mi Li, Zhijie Ding, Jing Yang, Lan Zhang, Lei Feng & Dennis Majoe - 2017 - Complexity 2017:1-11.
A large number of studies demonstrated that major depressive disorder is characterized by the alterations in brain functional connections which is also identifiable during the brains (...)resting-state.” But, in the present study, the approach of constructing functional connectivity is often biased by the choice of the threshold. Besides, more attention was paid to the number and length of links in brain networks, and the clustering partitioning of nodes was unclear. Therefore, minimum spanning tree analysis and the hierarchical clustering were first used for the depression disease in this study. Resting-state electroencephalogram sources were assessed from 15 healthy and 23 major depressive subjects. Then the coherence, MST, and the hierarchical clustering were obtained. In the theta band, coherence analysis showed that the EEG coherence of the MDD patients was significantly higher than that of the healthy controls especially in the left temporal region. The MST results indicated the higher leaf fraction in the depressed group. Compared with the normal group, the major depressive patients lost clustering in frontal regions. Our findings suggested that there was a stronger brain interaction in the MDD group and a left-right functional imbalance in the frontal regions for MDD controls. (shrink)

  48. Taking Emergentism Seriously.Lei Zhong - 2020 - Australasian Journal of Philosophy 98 (1):31-46.
The Exclusion Argument has afflicted non-reductionists for decades. In this article, I attempt to show that emergentismthe view that mental entities can downwardly cause physical entities (...) in a non-overdetermining wayis the most plausible approach to solving the exclusion problem. The emergentist approach is largely absent in contemporary philosophy of mind, because emergentism rejects the Causal Closure of Physics, a doctrine embraced by almost all physicalists. This article, however, challenges the consensus on causal closure and defends a physicalist version of emergentism. On closer examination, I find that neither physical evidence nor physicalist considerations can satisfactorily support causal closure. Moreover, I argue that two competing approaches that accept causal closure, compatibilism and autonomism, involve ad hoc postulations of mental causation. Therefore, all things considered, emergentism is the best option available to non-reductive physicalists. (shrink)
