Nietzsche has the reputation of being a virulent misogynist, so why are feminists interested in his philosophy? The essays in this volume provide answers to this question from a variety of feminist perspectives. The organization of the volume into two sets of essays, "Nietzsche's Use of Woman" and "Feminists' Use of Nietzsche," reflects the two general approaches taken to the issue of Nietzsche and woman. First, many debates have focused on how to interpret Nietzsche's remarks about women and femininity. Are (...) all of Nietzsche's comments to be read literally, or is he being ironic, perhaps even parodying and subverting stereotypes about women? Second, is his philosophy useful to feminist theory? Can we separate his philosophy from his seemingly derogatory remarks about women? Can feminists use his criticisms of truth, objectivity, reason, and the autonomous subject to challenge the exclusion of women from the history of philosophy? Some view his critiques of dualism and essentialism as well as his perspectivism and social constructivism as adumbrating later feminist positions. Others find troubling his privileging of masculinity and paradigms of domination; they see Nietzsche's sexual dualism as countering otherwise transgressive themes. Thomas Hoccleve wrote his Regement of Princes in 1411 and addressed it to the patronage of Henry, Prince of Wales, who was to succeed to the throne as Henry V two years later, on the death of his father, Henry IV. The Regement is a book of the governance of princes, drawn from the De regimine principum of Aegidius Romanus and from other similar works including the Secreta secretorum, which purports to be a compendium of Aristotle's advice on kingship to (...) Alexander the Great. Like these works, Hoccleve's Regement lays out a series of unexceptionable moral principles that should guide a prince's behavior: the prince is exhorted, for instance, to be prudent, just, liberal, and receptive to counsel. These recommendations are supported with citations from biblical and classical authorities and a wealth of narratives exemplary of kingly and unkingly conduct. Princes were to look in such books as in a mirror, and there see displayed the image of what they should truly be. They were “Mirrors for Princes.” Princes welcomed them and on occasion commissioned them, not because they specially desired to have instruction in the business of government from clerks, nor because they would much appreciate being told things they did not wish to hear, but because it was important that they should represent themselves as receptive to sage counsel. They are not simply political public relations exercises but, equally, they are not “books of instruction.”. (shrink)

L’article présente un cas de langue à deux genres parmi les langues Gur. Ses auteurs postulent que tout regroupement de noms autour d’affixes différenciés est motivé sémantiquement. L’affixe autour duquel se regroupent des noms est censé exprimer une valeur sémantique, celle que les noms regroupés ont en commun. Dans les langues Niger-Congo à genres en général, en koulango en particulier, quand le nom se met au pluriel, le marqueur de pluriel se substitue au marqueur de genre, sous une forme spécifique (...) qui permet de reconnaître le genre à travers elle. Le nombre de genres est donc déterminé par le nombre des marqueurs de genre. Le koulango dispose de quatre marqueurs de genre. Mais seuls deux schèmes d’accord sont attestés : un schème d’accord pour les noms des êtres animés, un autre pour ceux des non- animés. Les auteurs de l’article veulent montrer que le système des genres de cette langue a évolué vers sa réduction. Ils tentent ensuite d’en expliquer les raisons. (shrink)
