Can CSR Disclosure Protect Firm Reputation During Financial Restatements?Lu Zhang, Yuan George Shan & Millicent Chang - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 173 (1):157-184.
We investigate the effectiveness of corporate social responsibility disclosure in protecting corporate reputation following financial restatements. As expected under legitimacy theory, firms can signal their legitimacy via nonfinancial disclosure after the negative effects of financial restatements. Our results show that restating firms make substantial improvements to overall CSR disclosure quality by changing their standalone reports to a more conservative tone, increasing readability and report length, even though they strategically disclose less forward-looking and sustainability-related content. Such improvements are more pronounced in (...)

The life and thought of Li Kou, 1009-1059.Shan-yüan Hsieh & Shanyuan Xie - 1979 - San Francisco: Chinese Materials Center.
"The relation of Sung philosopher Li Kou to the reformer Wang An-shih and the problem of the relation between the two as men and as thinkers has long fascinated Sung specialists and students of philosophy. Hsieh has organized his work shrewdly, first dealing with age in which Li Kou lived and the philosophers life before embarking on his systematic and painstaking analysis of the writings, of the eclecticism that marks Li's thinking, Li's place in the refinement of traditional Confucianist political (...)

Effects of 15-Days −6° Head-Down Bed Rest on the Attention Bias of Threatening Stimulus.Shan Jiang, Yi-Ming Qian, Yuan Jiang, Zi-Qin Cao, Bing-Mu Xin, Ying-Chun Wang & Bin Wu - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Previous researchers have found that head-down bed rest will affect the emotional state of individuals, and negative emotions such as anxiety are closely related to attention bias. The present study adopted the dot-probe task to evaluate the effects of 15-days of −6° HDBR on the attention bias of threatening stimulus in 17 young men, which was completed before, during, after the bed rest. In addition, self-report inventories were conducted to record emotional changes. The results showed that the participants’ negative affect (...)

    Levels of Time in the Zhuangzi: A Leibnizian Perspective.Georg Northoff & Kai-Yuan Cheng - 2019 - Philosophy East and West 69 (4):1014-1033.
What is time? Is time real, or a mere illusion? We seem to feel the passage of time in our consciousness but are doomed to encounter great difficulty when trying to get a deeper grip on the nature of time. As Augustine famously remarked, "if no one asks me about what time is, I know what it is, but if I wish to explain it to him who asks, I do not know". The present essay does not aim so much (...)

Iterative Learning Control for Linear Discrete-Time Systems with Randomly Variable Input Trail Length.Yun-Shan Wei & Qing-Yuan Xu - 2018 - Complexity 2018:1-6.
For linear discrete-time systems with randomly variable input trail length, a proportional- type iterative learning control law is proposed. To tackle the randomly variable input trail length, a modified control input at the desirable trail length is introduced in the proposed ILC law. Under the assumption that the initial state fluctuates around the desired initial state with zero mean, the designed ILC scheme can drive the ILC tracking errors to zero at the desirable trail length in expectation sense. The designed (...)

Daily Challenge/Hindrance Demands and Cognitive Wellbeing: A Multilevel Moderated Mediation Model.Huangen Chen, Hongyan Wang, Mengsha Yuan & Shan Xu - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Based on the challenge-hindrance stressor model, this study explored the mechanism of how challenge/hindrance demands affect cognitive wellbeing on a daily basis. Specifically, we examined the mediating effect of work–family enrichment on the relationship between challenge/hindrance demands and cognitive wellbeing. In addition, we tested the moderating effect of overqualification on the relationship between challenge/hindrance demands and work–family enrichment on a daily basis. Finally, we examined the moderated mediation effect of perceived overqualification in a multilevel model. To capture changes in work–family (...)

Most studies have examined the outcomes of patients supported by extracorporeal membrane oxygenation as a life-sustaining treatment. It is unclear whether significant social events are associated with the use of life-sustaining treatment. This study aimed to compare the trend of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation use in Taiwan with that in the world, and to examine the influence of significant social events on the trend of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation use in Taiwan.

The Moderating Effect of Occupational Burn-Out on the Link of Career Competencies to Career Sustainability Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Mixed-Method Study.Wei Zhang, Tachia Chin, Jian-Ben Peng, Yi-Nan Shan & George Kwame Agbanyo - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most employees face increasing career-related stress, particularly those who work in multinational corporations, because the international travel constraints prevent them from going back to their families. Hence, it is imperative to investigate the critical impact of employees’ occupational burnout on career-related outcomes. In response, this research explores the moderating effect of OB on the relationships between career competencies and career sustainability. To achieve a more comprehensive understanding of relevant issues, we adopted a mixed-method research design (...)

Multimodal discourse analysis offers a novel lens for the study of legal discourse. Within the closing arguments of a trial, prosecution and defense attorneys utilize various multimodal resources to present evidence, articulate opinions, and adopt stances to achieve their communicative goals. This research focuses on the closing arguments in the criminal trial concerning the death of George Floyd to analyze the multimodal representation of the closing arguments delivered by both prosecution and defense attorneys. It employs the analytical framework of (...)

Shan Shui art is a traditional style of Chinese landscape painting that has had a lasting impact on Chinese culture. This paper attempts to view a masterpiece of this genre of art – the artwork entitled ›Hermit Dwelling in the Qingbian Mountains‹ by Wang Meng – from the perspective of Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophy of art in order to show how such an artwork can convey an ontological insight for those who experience it. Instead of viewing the artwork as simply (...)

In other words, what has the past 30 years contributed to our understanding of the mind? Do we really know anything that wasn't already clear to William James?" Each participant (...)
