The US neutrino community gathered at the Workshop on the Intermediate Neutrino Program at Brookhaven National Laboratory February 4-6, 2015 to explore opportunities in neutrino physics over the next five to ten years. Scientists from particle, astroparticle and nuclear physics participated in the workshop. The workshop examined promising opportunities for neutrino physics in the intermediate term, including possible new small to mid-scale experiments, US contributions to large experiments, upgrades to existing experiments, R&D plans and theory. The workshop was organized into (...) two sets of parallel working group sessions, divided by physics topics and technology. Physics working groups covered topics on Sterile Neutrinos, Neutrino Mixing, Neutrino Interactions, Neutrino Properties and Astrophysical Neutrinos. Technology sessions were organized into Theory, Short-Baseline Accelerator Neutrinos, Reactor Neutrinos, Detector R&D and Source, Cyclotron and Meson Decay at Rest sessions.This report summarizes discussion and conclusions from the workshop. Contemporary bioethics is usually notable for its focus on the uses and abuses of biomedical technology, on personal liberty and the on the formulation of ethical problems as dilemmas to be solved by utilitarian calculus within the frameworks of committees and institutional guidelines. It is argued that these developments actually reflect a technologization of medical ethics itself, which more often relies non-personal algorithms of utility.This is explained, from a historical point of view, by the impact of technology on the concepts (...) of nature and naturalism and by the triumphs of modern science, which obscures non-scientific modes of discourse. The article acknowledges some benefits of the technologization of ethics such as the democratization of decision-making but the discussion concentrates on five arguments against the dominance of utilitarianism in medical ethics. The common denominator of these arguments is that utilitarianism fails its own standards by undermining trust in the public domain. The loss of trust is brought about by the displacement of the phenomenological self and from fostering adversarialism in ethical discourse. (shrink)

Ben-Israel and Vaidman have raised objections to my arguments that there are cases where a quantum mechanical weak value can be said not to represent the system to which it pertains. They are correct in pointing out that some of my conclusions were too general. However, for weak values of projection operators my conclusions still stand.

Open peer commentary on the article “Enaction as a Lived Experience: Towards a Radical Neurophenomenology” by Claire Petitmengin. Upshot: Why has the neurophenomenological approach not been adopted as a common and even obligatory tool in the study of consciousness? I suggest that the problem with the neurophenomenological approach is its effectiveness on the one hand and its almost impossible demands from the scientist on the other: One cannot accept the neurophenomenological approach without rejecting not only the paradigm of cognitive science, (...) but the scientific paradigm as a whole. İslâm tarihinde daha çok tasavvufi kimliği ile öne çıkan ve tarikat şeyhi olarak tanınan İmâm-ı Rabbânî (ö. 1034/1624), çoğunlukla tasavvufa yoğunlaşsa da yaşadığı dönemde İslâm’ın tahrif edilme çabalarına karşı durmuş, itikadi ve siyasi alanlarda mücadele vermiştir. Bu bağlamda o, yaşadığı topraklarda yöneticilik yapan Ekber Şâh’ın (ö. 1014/1605) Dîn-i İlâhî projesinin başarısız olması için gayret sarf etmiştir. İmâm-ı Rabbânî, tasavvufi ve itikadi alanlardaki önemli çalışmalarının yanında birçok fıkıh ve fıkıh tarihi meselesiyle de ilgilenmiştir. Kendinden önceki mirası devralmış birisi olarak fıkıhla ilgili (...) pek çok konuda söz söyleme gereği duymuştur. Bunlardan birisi de Ebû Hanîfe (ö. 150/767) ve onun mezhebi hakkında yapılan tenkitlerdir. İmâm-ı Rabbânî özellikle Mektûbât adlı eserinde ehl-i re’y ve ehl-i hadîs kavramları etrafında gelişen tartışmalara dahil olmuş ve doğal olarak mensup olduğu Hanefî mezhebi ve onun imamı Ebû Hanîfe’yi farklı bakımlardan birtakım delillerle savunma gayretine girmiştir. O, Hanefî imamlarının salt re’yci diye nitelenmelerine karşı çıkmış, onların hadisleri kabul ettiklerini, bunun yanı sıra hüküm istinbatında kendilerine has yöntemlere de sahip olduklarını ifade etmiştir. Yine o, Hanefîliği ele alırken sadece bazı “ilmi” delillerle yetinmemiş, bunların yanında ictihadda Hz. Îsâ ve Ebû Hanîfe benzerliği, Hz. İsâ’nın nüzûlden sonra Hanefî mezhebine uygun amel edeceği ve Hanefî mezhebinin nübüvvet kemâlâtına sahip olması gibi manevi, işari ve tasavvufi argümanlarla da savunmasını güçlendirme yoluna gitmiştir. İmâm-ı Rabbânî muhaliflerin iddialarına bu şekilde karşı cevaplar vererek Hanefî mezhebinin hak üzere olduğunu temellendirmeye çalışmıştır. Bu makalede, İmâm-ı Rabbânî’nin Hanefîliğe yüklediği bazı manevi-işârî vasıflar ile kimi ehl-i hadîsin ileri sürdüğü iddialara karşı verdiği cevaplar ve yaptığı savunmalar ele alınacaktır. (shrink)
